Important Note: Three copies of the Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game Core Set are needed to have a complete playset of cards.

Dear Fantasy Flight Games.

This shit:

Do that!

Thank you.
Sincerely a concerned customer who do not wanna buy 3 big ass boxes full of extra shit he does not need ontop of the few cards he'd like.

Hahaha yeah I know it's par for the course on LCGs but it's getting pretty ridiculous and as successful as these things are (insanely so) I do think they're probably putting off thousands more buyers by not offering this option (so I guess the question is whether the additional profits and reduced costs of not having to support multiple SKUs offset that enough).

I don't have time for another FFG lifestyle game (already all-in on Arkham LCG and Destiny), but the game does look really cool. Time is becoming a real factor here with so many good lifestyle games out now. Really wish FFG would move stronger into digital because I would totally buy in and try out other lifestyle games of theirs if I could do some of them digital-only.

Well, with L5R being a competitive game, you really only need to own 3 core sets if you want to be able to build for every player. If you have an opponent you will regularly play, they should probably be picking up one of the cores rather than one player financing the entire game.

That said, man FFG needs to cut that shit out.

Phew, I was recently hired as a marketing writer for FFG and the L5R announcement was my first big assignment, this morning was nerve wracking. Glad to see it's getting a mostly positive response!

Everything seemed pretty great from this long time fan.

Tbh, alot of the stuff with the game is stuff that I would have done, as I do think the SCC/Clan Wars was when L5R was the least silly, and this precedes SCC (with some changes as well). But I think I'm one of the few who would who wanted such a reboot.

I especially like the generic unit changes.

How much do you know about X-Wing? I ask because announcements and previews for new wave X-Wing ships seem to have a problem with having rules mistakes or conflicts in them. It's become almost like a game for people in the official forums to see how quick they can find the mistakes.

Also, this means we have an insider who can clue us into when new ship previews will be happening? The wait for new news is getting unbearable!
I know you can't tell me anything. I can wish though.

We have a real live FFG person ITT now!? Yay, someone for me to direct my comments and complaints at! :p To be fair, I probably have like $1500 of FFG product sitting on my shelves so I feel very entitled, like an obnoxious season-ticket holder.

Yeah, after that stealth brag I really can't offer any fun or useful information. I think it's okay to say that I am VERY stoked for L5R, the most excited I've been for a game since Netrunner.

The game itself sounds like fun, definetly thinking of getting a pack.

While on the inside, please bring up my issue with any related people. It would eliminate one of my main criticisms on how FFG handles this LCG thing.

I love the FFG games like Arkham and Android: Netrunner, but this is definetly an annoyance of mine. Mage Wars is made by a much smaller company and they could definetly afford to make these spell tomes that completed my Mage Wars collection of cards so I got a full set of each. Wish FFG would do the same for Arkham for example. I want all possibilities when building decks but not "3 core boxes of stuff"-want. And Arkham is right now the only LCG game I am going all in on for the cooperative RPG nature of it. All else I kinda like to try out because of my general game interest (love reading rules and game systems).

Gonna chime in with some love for the Arkham Horror LCG. Got it a few weeks ago and was immediately intrigued. Honestly, I haven't *actually* played it that much. And I've only played the intro scenario with a second player. The first time, my girlfriend and I got through it pretty easily, but only because we fudged some pretty major rules. Second time, we got slaughtered. Third time was with another friend, where we did pretty well until the big bad spawned and then we were forced to resign or get defeated, but we're planning on actually completing the rest of the campaign later this week.

I've played the first scenario of Dunwich by myself, as well, but stood zero chance with my deck of actually getting any of the good resolutions.

That said, I've already caught the completionist bug. Miskatonic Musem/Essex/Blood on the Altar all arrived today in the mail and I can't wait to get through them. Picked up Rougarou/Carnivale when I got the core set and haven't played them, either. I'll finish out Dunwich, of course, but now with the announcement of the next deluxe expansion, I don't see myself stopping anytime soon.

It's been difficult to get into any CCG/LCG games in recent years, because I don't really know anyone else who commits the same time/resources to those, but with Arkham, you already have almost everything you need to draw in another player. And being co-op instead of competitive makes it more fun to teach/learn/experience with another person who may at first be apprehensive.

Played my first game of Star Wars Armada tonight despite owning a copy of my own for two years. The host of my game group got a huge bundle for a great price and wanted to try it. We played a six hour long 400 point (upgrade-less) objective that was a lot of fun. I ran Imperials. I can't wait to try it out again soon. I need to pick up some of the Wave 3 and beyond stuff though.

I went ahead and pulled the trigger on backing the new Brass. The newest announced stretch goal is replacing the money with custom poker chips. I've learned to play Brass recently and played about 7 games in a row online. So it's a game that I'm excited about and want to get anyway, and coincidentally there just happens to be a gorgeous new version coming out.

It's now my fourth KS; Tiny Epic Western, Yokohama, Thunderstone Quest, and now Brass.

And Yokohama should be on my doorstep some time today.

Good. Give me a Forbidden Stars retheme (easy enough but encroaches a but in Rebellion's territory), a SHDA retheme (you're a squad of named Stormtroopers skulking down tight corridors trying to exterminate attacking... Ewoks?), a BB:TM retheme (some weird Blitzball-style game played by Gungans?), and more. The loss of the 40K license left a vacuum. Let Star Wars rush in to fill it.

Brass was never a game I would have bought or tried but that new artwork has me considering backing. It doesn't look drab and boring anymore.

Speaking of Kickstarter games, I might throw some money at Petrichor. I love the write up in the newest Weekly Crowdfunding Roundup on BGG. The game itself looks pretty quaint and serene in a way that reminds me a bit of Takenoko or Tokaido. Sounds like a fun game to put on a "Magic Moods: Sounds of the Thunderstorm" type CD whilst playing it as well.
Petrichor might have you searching for a definition in order to determine what the game might be about, but publishers Cloud Island and Mighty Boards have made things easy for you by placing the definition on the box itself: the pleasant earthy smell after rain. In this design by David Chircop and Dávid Turczi, you are the one responsible for that pleasant earthy smell because you are a cloud, and you want to float around, make more clouds, and rain on things to grow more plants than any other cloud.

Stopped by Miniature Market today at lunch to pick up an order. While there I found a copy of each Food Chain Magnate and The Great Zimbabwe in the ding and dent section! FCM was $75 and TGZ $70 it was more than I wanted to spend but figured I could not pass these deals up. Canceled my Aeon's End kick stater and grabbed them both. The boxes had hardly a mark on them.

Awesome deal. Seriously.

We did one of our rare pub game nights at my favourite bar here in town - it's this particular group of guys together on a weeknight because of family, jobs etc. Good beer, good chat, and good games. The plan was for either Terraforming Mars or Scythe, but because we whizzed through Terraforming, we ended up playing both.

I"m not quite convinced by Terraforming Mars yet. The 'standard' game of randomly drawing some cards to buy at the start of the round is really swingy. Three of out of five players had pretty poor draws for the first few rounds, causing a complete lack of engine building. We ended up with relatively low scores as a group, and even the people who managed to put something together felt unsatisfied. Next time, the draft variant, even if it'll take longer.

Scythe was much better. Two new players, but they grokked it quickly & the game moved along at a good pace. We realised the end was coming right after I finished my last turn, which sucked, but I still had fun. Even though plenty of my group own it, I suspect I'll end up buying this.

Any thoughts about the game currently on kickstarter, Rayguns and Rocketships ?

Edit: finally got to bring Adrenaline to the table last night. First time play for everyone, and we had 5 players. It took us a little time to work things out, and sadly, by the time we were in the swing of things, the game had ended (we were playing the introductory game with only 5 kills). Very fun! Looking forward to playing again soon!

edit:

So.... Dark Souls reviews are out... It looks about as expected... Long and not very engaging.. I might paint the minis when they come, but I probably won't put the game to the table until the stretch goals arrive in October.

Man, Food Chain Magnate is a great game. $75 is a hell of a good get.

Would love food chain but you have to think there is going to be a pretty great new edition at some stage.

Dark souls reviews are about as surprising as the dice tower being suspiciously positive about Yamatai...

Haha can you expand on that? Is DS getting good reviews? What is up w/ DT & Yamatai? afaik they don't have a special relationship with DoW but I seem to be missing some background here.

Figured that would be the case. At least I have three others who are willing to play this with me.

Saw those videos todays. Tom didn't like dark souls, archaic, long and boring.

Zee loved Yamatai, other thought it was good. Each reviewer has their bias and they are not affaid to express it.

Oh hahah OK. Yeah I've been slammed all week so not keeping up with BG media too much just saw something on my Twitter where Verge or someplace said Dark Souls board game was good but maybe they were comparing it to Monopoly or CAH like some of these non-board-game sites do. :p

Yeah DT has very funny idiosyncrasies. Like how Sam will write off some stuff b/c of religious reasons (though he's pretty open about it so I think it's totally legit -- not like he's making up reasons), how much Tom likes Dice Masters compared to MUCH MUCH better games :p, etc.

Speaking of DT I actually really like their new format for their podcast. If you bailed a while ago b/c you got sick of all the rando contributors it's worth checking out again. Too bad Suz isn't full-time because I thought she was a really good complement to Tom & Eric. I hope they don't have people like Buonocore on too much because all the in-jokes are just grating but so far so good. Getting rid of the contributors is a huge improvement.

No, there's very little chance of a new souped up edition happening. Splotter is literally guy & his current partner in mainland Europe making up game designs that seem interesting to them, and then following through producing them through local supply chains. He has a successful dayjob business & Splotter is the vanity project making game designs he wants to play. Food Chain Magnate's clearly been ridiculously successful & stressful for them, especially with the current reprint of Indonesia, and that stress suggests they want to withdraw, not expand.

If you listen to the Heavy Cardboard podcast, or follow along their posts, the Splotter folks are good friends with them, so there's a lot of "inside baseball" info.

If you want Food Chain Magnate, buy it. If you want the in-print Indonesia, buy it.

I think they are going to do a reprint of Antiquity later this year as well. I for one will not miss out on that boat.

There must be some sort of weird transfer to USPS or whatever going on there. :p

It sounds like they will not do it, for all the reasons you listed. However board gaming does have the all encompassing blob of singularity which could always buy the license and print it out. It just seems that success is going to be hard to leave on the table. Or umm, off the table. You know what I mean.

I'm still dirty about buying Quadropolis on their recommendation :p I would point out however that Quadropolis still gets pride of place on their new set where they have far fewer games to display ...

Anyway I need to get over it and escape from that self imposed prison of cynicism.

Speaking of escaping, I have played the tutorial and first game of Unlock! Which is ... about escaping. In a different approach to other escape room games it uses just cards and has a system of card with a cupboard numbered 2 and a key number 5 leads you to card 7 which tells you what you find.

It doesn't *quite* work as well as I expected, but it gets the job done and it makes for an enjoyable hour. The reason it doesn't quite work is that all the puzzles are just a little too limited in the outcomes. Think a choose your own adventure book where you pretty much know the right response and even if you don't you are going to be correct most of the time anyway.

But overall I like it and the low price point makes it worth a look. You only get three games (3 decks of cards and a manual), so that long term value is a factor, but I could see myself passing it along to other people. I will say that I'm glad they also included a tutorial game, because the manual is pretty awful about explaining how things work. The game itself struggles in this regard too, but you kind of "get it" and then there isn't too many variations of that theme to contend with, at least with the first set of cards.

I'll probably play through the rest and consider expansions. It is pretty decent.

I'm pretty hyped for Tabletop Day. The store I'll be going to finally put out some info. They are running a few tournaments I guess, a free Dominion tourney and a $5 TtR tournament with promos (wonder if they got their hands on more translucent trains like what was in the 2014 TT Day kit). I'm more excited about the demo schedule though. A guy will be demoing the following game throughout the day:

10-12 Champions of Midgard
12-2 Terraforming Mars
2-4 The Oracles of Delphi
4-6 Dinner Break
6-8 Captain is dead/Instanbul
8-10 Shadows over Camelot
10-12 Deception in Hong Kong/Codenames
Filler Games Braintopia, Love letter Premium, Star Fluxx, Coup

I didn't back the most recent Kickstarter for the expansion and reprint for Champions of Midgard but it looked like a good worker placement game. I might take part in that one if I'm there early enough to get a spot. Playing a game of Deception with a lot of people should be fun, Codenames too. It's fun enough with six but I have to imagine it's better with a more full table. I'm still hoping someone brings Food Chain Magnate, but I realized recently that I really hope someone brings Captain SONAR. It seems like SONAR is a game that would go better in that kind of setting than if I bought it and took it to my weekly game night (which only draws at most six people anyway).

I'm starting to think I'll take less items though. I originally thought I'd take all of PitchCar, Catacombs 3e, some regular games like Alien Frontiers, and more. Now I'm thinking I'll just take X-Wing and Armada and then see what others bring and get in in their games. I don't want to load up my back seat and trunk with games and then get there and only play two of them because either A) No one wants to play them, or B) I see too many other things I want to play and don't get to them.

Yeah but the pieces are functionally worse than the previous edition, since they don't fit on the board, and the boats are now chits that don't pop off the board as easily.

I was going to trade for a copy until I found out these flaws. It sucks, so I guess I'll have to wait another decade to maybe own Indonesia.

Opened my Arkham Horror LCG box for the first time yesterday.

It was kinda overwhelming lol. I'm gonna look at it all again after I finish my term papers.

I got to play a long game of Star Trek Ascendency today and a match of BattleCON. Ascendency was interesting, though I got really unlucky with planet draws and had only two Culture Probes the whole game. Still came kind of close to winning it. I did manage to stop someone from winning by attacking their home planet and systematically killing their culture probes on multiple planets, but it didn't matter much in the end; the other two players reached 6 Ascendency at the same time while I still needed 2 more culture to get my sixth and one had a ton of planets, so he won.

We tried Millennium Blades tonight with 4 people, and it was surprisingly positive! I don't know if anyone liked it enough to play again, but no one seemed to hate it, and people were pretty engaged as it was going on. They did say it was quite long though, 2.5 hours with 4 new people even with the prerelease tournament. With people who know how to play it'd probably still be 2 hours minimum.

Most of the cards and rules are quite intuitive, but unfortunately we were left with a few questions and the BGG rules forum does not seem particularly active at present. There was also at least one case that seemed really counterintuitive if the community answer is correct (a Next effect that says a card "comes into play yada yada" happens AFTER the card is placed in Play, triggers its Play effect, exists in play...and then it "comes into play"? :/).

*edit* We did have a surprising thing where one player got decent cards, bought hardly anything, and just sat on money. They ended up with 17 VP from pure money, almost as much as winning a tournament, and easily crushed the person who won every tournament. It felt kind of anticlimactic and odd with the spirit of the game to just avoid buying anything when you have a store full of cards.
