The blind nostalgia of Mario Kart 64.

I grew up in the N64 era, and it may be my favorite system of all time because of that. It opened my eyes to a world of gaming that I never thought existed, made me realize games were here to stay and were going to grow up with me, and created memories that would last forever.

One of those games that left a huge impact on me as with many, was Mario Kart 64.

I played the shit out of MK64. I had played SMK on the SNES before, (or after, I don't remember, either way MK64 was definitely my "first" MK), but this was something way cooler. And it was something I owned. Countless nights were spent playing this game for years on end. I loved it. It was the shit, and it will always hold a special place in my heart.

But I'm also not blind. MK64 has not aged well. It can still be fun mind you, but in my opinion, every Mario Kart since has been superior. We are now at MK8, which I firmly believe is the best entry in the series, (I haven't played DX yet, but will be very soon!), and as much as I love MK64 for what it gave me, at this point I would probably say that I think that it could be one of, if not the worst MKs ever made. Compared to other entries, it's boring and uninspired, and the only thing I really think it had going for it was having the last great Battle mode in the series (until hopefully MK8DX's).

But MK64 is just one of those games that a lot of people just CANNOT take off their rose tinted glasses for. A few of my close friends still stand by that they think it's definitely the best MK, and shun every new one because of it. Their reasons are always bullshit, and if we do end up playing it we get bored pretty quickly. And I know this just isn't in my group of friends either. The game just left such an impact on so many people that they still legitimately see it as the only MK worth playing, which is insane to me.

I completely understand why so many people would hold it so dear, but comon. Really? What is the deal with people just not being able to let MK64 go? Is it because Double Dash mixed too many things up too quick for some people, and they immediately assumed the rest wouldn't retain the 64 simplicity? I think MK8 has overcame people's opinions more than others because it's just so god damned good, but I still feel like there's this weird stigma attached to every MK after 64 just because they're not 64.

I know this could probably just come off as "don't hate what people like", but I'm curious, does anyone here on GAF think that MK64 is actually the best MK game? If so, I would like to hear the case. I just don't get it, but I will listen and try to. I understand wanting to play it FOR nostalgia purposes, that's fine, but when people say it's actually the best Mario Kart, that's what drives me loopy. It's not like Mortal Kombat 2 against the 3D Mortal Kombats that I could definitely see a case for liking the originals over, or the 3D Mario games that are all different enough that I could understand someone's love over 64 to Galaxy. MK8 and most in the series behind it still retain the same core of MK, it's really just a better version of the same game. And also, does anyone else have friends that pull this card too? Or am I alone in this and my friends just suck?

It's the worst console Mario Kart, but I don't fault anyone for thinking it's the best. A lot of people I know stopped at either that one or Double Dash.

Hard to argue against the memories of sleepovers with your best friends.

I didn't get into Mario Kart properly into the DS. As an 8 year old in the N64 era, I felt that Diddy Kong Racing shat on MK64 from a great height.

To be honest, I don't see much nostalgia for MK64 anymore. I think MK8 pretty much did away with that (not for me personally, though; MKDS quickly became a favorite of mine).

It's definitely one of my least favorite entries. I think it only beats MKWii.

Battle Mode in that game is still among the best of the series, though.

It was my favorite Mario Kart game until MK8 came out. It has a lot of great tracks and in my opinion the best battle mode (haven't played 8D's yet).

Crash Team Racing is another game from that era that people still insist is the best kart racer ever... It's just not.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Up there with DMC2 as one of the most disappointing sequels in gaming when it launched.

I didn't care much for the game at the time. I thought it felt too slow compared to the original. It was definitely a better 'party' game due to the 4 player option, however.

yeah, I have always found its pretty bad and bland

The SNES one wasnt really good either, but it was revolutionary in a way, so I still get the big love for that one

I agree that the 4-player option was its only saving grace compared to the SNES one... the issue was definitely that N64 had a boatload of great 4-player games to pick from, so that was not as big a deal as it might seem.

This definitely has rose-tinted glasses for many people. But I think that one big factor for it is that it was one of the very first games you could play at home with 3 other people. It was insane! And it was a lot of fun racing around, exploiting tracks for their "secrets," and the battle mode.

Any nostalgia for MK64 is genuine proof of the phenomenon that one's first Mario Kart will almost inevitably be their favorite Mario Kart.

Mario Kart 64 isn't good. You just enjoyed being eight.

I disliked it when it came out in 96, and my opinion on it hasn't changed.

The sprites looked terrible 1996. It's just an ugly, ugly game. The series finally making the jump to fully 3D polygons in Double Dash was huge.

My fave of the entire series followed by MK8. I dusted off my N64 a could weeks ago and still enjoyed playing it!

Good controls, fun tracks with a few gimmicks and block fort.

Double Dash and Wii focused more on the gimmicks. With Mario Kart 8 they found a perfect balance on console.

Mario Kart Wii has replaced 64 in my friend groups as the one they all think is the best because it's the one they went back to after years of not playing Mario Kart.

I think we can all agree with that this game was vastly superior anyway:

I still hate how the original version is now lost forever due to the Microsoft buyout.

Easily my least favorite entry in the series.

Same here.

Just as the OP, the N64 is my favourite console of all time, but I grew up with the Atari 2600, Intellivision and NES.

And MK64 was such a let down after the magnificent Super Mario Kart.

And Diddy Kong Racing was the superior games, and superior to the GC MK too.

Every time I go back to it I'm immediately put off by the steering and the items. Definitely my least favorite of the series along with what little I've played of arcade gp.

I think it's better than the Wii one personally, but I agree, it's aged pretty poorly. That being said, I've got some strong nostalgia for Super Mario Kart that lets me look past its (many) flaws, so I see where they're coming from. Some people don't really care enough to get over that hurdle to try something new.

I always throught the tracks were too long and it felt slow. The latter part not helped by the PAL version.

Thank fuck they did away with fake item boxes too.

theres a lot of blind nostalgia in the n64 era
Yep.

And I can understand why. For many, N64 was their first console. I get it.

But yeah, I have to agree. 64 is one of the weaker entries in the franchise, aside from Super Circuit. I will say it has one my favorite Rainbow Roads, though, and I'm glad for it's inclusion in Deluxe.

And like someone else said, even a weaker Mario Kart game is still a good game otherwise.

I found myself playing Mickey's Speedway more than MK64 back in the day. Shoot, I think I played CruisN Exotica more than MK64. Yeah all Mario Kart after 64 are way better.

MK64 was great for its time but every game since has been superior, especially MK8.

However, I do have some friends that hold 64 up to god-like status. I hope MK8 finally convinces them otherwise.

Easily the best MK after 8.64 had a better sense of speed compared to all the games outside 8, the games also started making tracks too wide which didn't help.

I liked MK64 alright but you are correct in that many people view it through rose-tinted memories. It can still be fun to play, of course. To be honest, my least favorite MK is the original on SNES. I've always thought it was kind of ugly even back then and I don't enjoy playing it now at all, whereas I can squeeze some fun out of the newer entries. The way the characters were drawn on SMK always seemed a bit...off to me. Like it was farmed out to another studio even though I know it wasn't.

I felt that Diddy Kong Racing shat on MK64 from a great height.

Also this. I enjoyed DKR more than MK64 easily.

I feel like Mario Kart 64 is objectively the worst in the entire franchise. How some people claim its the best is kind of baffling to me, though of course they're welcome to their opinions.

people are strangely nostalgic for the N64, I've found. not that the nostalgia is strange, mind you, but the rose colored glasses with which people view those games today is puzzling to me personally and I love the N64.

MK64 is easily the worst entry in the series ahead of only the Wii version imo but I have an irrational hatred of the Wii version

I definitely like MK64 but it's flawed as hell, but then again it's 20 years old so it deserves some slack as it was great at the time. It's probably my second least favorite (Mario Kart Wii being least favorite) in the series.

I think this game is well designed and beautiful but I just never got along with the controls.

MK64 has the opposite problem in my opinion; great controls but butt ugly and horrendous design.

Yeah, I actually prefer the GBA one to MK64, because it has less repulsive graphics to me and because the controls remind me of the SNES version.

Coins on the track are a big feature of the series too...
