Assassin's Creed Origins screenshot leaks, new details (AC4 team, Naval combat, more)

I mean that seems the sensible thing to do, but if that's what they were doing why call it 'Origins'? That it's a subtitle at all will probably put a lot of people off, as traditionally, non-numbered Assassin's Creed games have been 'holding pattern' games, keeping the story where it is while they decide what to do with it (and yes, I count Unity and Syndicate as falling into this category). I think they either need to shit or get off the pot - either make Assassin's Creed 5, or start a new Assassin's Creed series.

They dropped the numbers because it didn't made any sense and people would feel like they needed to play 4 before 5 etc.

So far if I understood your "holding pattern" thing there have been 4 main chapters in the history (both for the historical era-story arc and the game design structure)

Assassin's Creed 1
AC2/Brotherhood/Révélations
AC3/4 Black Flag/Rogue
AC Unity/Syndicate
and now Origins

Unity brought too much changes to be considered as a "holding pattern". They pretty much changed all the climbing/architecture, all the combat system and all the stealth + mission design.

"Origins" is a pretty good name :
-they want once again to focus on the core of the franchise with a soft reboot (get back to the origin of the serie)
-and to get back in time with the origins of the Assassins (story-wise)

Zelda is an action game?

It's action/adventure-exploration/puzzle without any role playing. As I said, they can share traits but Zelda isn't a role playing game. Action-adventure games, including Assassin's Creed and Far Cry, took some traits from RPGs but that doesn't make them RPGs. It's not the core of the game design.

I just can't wait to see what this looks like. Been a long year without muh new Creed. I have to finish Syndicate at some point.

I really hope they make the modern day story relevant again. Games seem pretty empty when they have the most slim thread tying it all together these days.

I've always personally hated that story. I go from being in this lovely sandbox to this silly story that takes me away from anything else that I'd rather be doing.

"A development source we spoke to compared it numerous times to Bethesda’s Skyrim"

They really are desperate, huh.

Zelda is an action game?

It's certainly not an RPG. Even AC has more character customization and levels/upgrades than Zelda does. So unless you also feel like an open world doesn't work in Zelda, I don't see why you'd think it's a bad idea for action games.

Did we already lose the term action/adventure? I always felt it was more accurate of a description than calling Zelda an RPG.

Egypt got my hype up and then Naval Battles completely killed it. : ( So disappointed if this is true. I hated, fucking LOATHED all of the Naval shit in the previous AC games. If true, as much as I want an AC set in Egypt, I might skip this one.

The oddest thing about the Assassins Creed series is that now many fans seem to be more interested in boats lol

I'd rather have a fleshed out naval combat game using Black Flag as a base than I would another overwrought Assassin's Creed title.

lol no? Yeah like they're gonna get rid of modern day just to please you lot. It's here to stay. Deal with that. Count you out.

I'm sorry but I defend MD to my last breath. It's what makes AC, AC. It's unique. I'n glad they have it in.
The old way of managing modern day (Desmond) was ok. The post III one is stupid, boring, tacked on, and goes nowhere.

We need a new modern protagonist with a face and an arc.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
This is from the blackflag devs right?
I love the setting but I think I'll pass if it's anything like blackflag, the Naval combat is actually a put off.
I mean it's ancient Egypt and we are having Naval combat from this team again?

What, you don't like British Asshole and Stoner Woman as your modern protagonists?

Assassin's Creed: Breath of the Wild.

The opposite. Breath of the Wild was basically Zelda copying a lot of stuff from Assassin's Creed, other Ubi games mixed with some stuff from Monster Hunter.

A previous rumour said it's leading team is the same one from "blackflag team" (remember that AAA games outsource a big part of their work to different teams, in this case mostly to other Ubisoft studios).

If we talk about the naval part instead of leading the whole game, as I remember, Ubisoft Sofia was in charge of the naval part of all Assassin's Creed games.

And unsurprisingly the stuff copied from Ubisoft are the weakest elements of BOTW.

Those unapologetic Ubitowers in a Nintendo game, christ. They don't even attempt to mask it.

Everything about that sounds amazing. Been a while since I bought an Assassin's Creed, but I've always enjoyed them. (Save AC3, what a disaster that was.) Bring on e3.

Careful now, people get upset if you mention the clear ubisoft influences on BotW. Granted it's better than anything ubisoft ever did, but praising ubi or the AC series for anything at all is too much for some here.

And here i was thinking that we won't get the new Assassins Creed this year cause we haven't heard anything so far. I am so excited for this. Feels like ages since the last game.

Syndicate was only 2 years ago. It only feels long since they purposefully rested a series they used to push out assembly line style like a fast food burger.

Well i Hope they develop assassins Creed Japan the Next time or for Next gen, this setting will be amazing

I would say that the fans of AC games aren't that much interested in boats. People who found the formula to be stale are though. I wouldn't consider them fan of the franchise since Black Flag is putting everything that made AC, AC to the background.

That's like saying Nintendo is pushing out Zelda in a assembly line.

"rested" meaning that since 2016 started, they "only" put out a mediocre trilogy remaster as a retail product last year instead of a new game, two parts of the AC chronicles game, the worldwide launch of the Assassin's Creed: Identity mobile game, and a movie.

And probably more I can't even think of. And this is still somehow a improvement.

I don't buy that at all. Numbered sequels are far less confusing than a series of bland subtitles. At this point, I think only the most hardcore of fans could reel off the entire series of titles in the correct order from memory!

I was talking in terms of story. In terms of gameplay, Unity is obviously the biggest change in the whole series, but the story only has very tenuous links to other games (although the way you play the same mission from two perspectives in two games was really cool), and doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. The meta-story is practically non-existent, ditching even the thin 'you're working for a Templar-controlled game developer' device.

What was naval combat like in ancient Egypt? They didn't have traditional cannons yet, did they? Not being able to get in massive explosive battles during a raging thunder storm means the ship stuff won't have what I loved most about Black Flag.

Did they have trebuchets or something of the like? I feel like I've seen flaming projectiles launched from ships of that era portrayed in popular media. I'm honestly totally ignorant to this.

There is nothing wrong with the towers in Zelda.

Limited weapon duration and stamina, not being able to climb while raining, not including the location of the guys who buys you seeds to expand your awfully limited inventory in a main mission to make sure you find him, moving devices using unplayable motion sensor+physics in certain shrine puzzles are some of the main flaws of the game, and they weren't copied from Ubi.

There is only a huge flaw that AC and Breath of the Wild share: the lack of a fishing rod minigame. :p

Yves Guillemot also stated in an interview many years ago that he also would love to see an AC game set in Japan with ninjas and samurais but the teams keep setting the games in other locations.

Wonder if Osiris got scrapped. The dev period on it has been insane (teaser trailer was 2013) and can't imagine navel combat in ancient Egypt. Wonder if the game just had too many development problems and they scrapped it and are doing something else.

Dropping that truth. The first 3 AC games don't get enough credit on gaf for what they did for open world games.

Title sounds bland, though naval combat is a different story, it was amazing in 4, so I'm curious to see how they'll do it here.

I wish Ubi would make a pirate game, the foundations they have from Black Flag are sound, all they need to do is build up on it.

I understand the trepidation regarding how naval combat may be more limited half a millennia before Black Flag but I never expected to see so many people outright trashing the ship stuff of that game.

I was under the impression it was fairly universally loved and the main reason why that game stood out among other AC titles of that era (it certainly wasn't the assassin shit).

I don't know if this is a vocal minority thing or what but it's honestly shocking to me.

GAF and Ubisoft don't tend to mix well.

it's like

they didn't hear the complaints that the best parts of Black Flag was everything BUT the Assassin's Creed aspect and they doubled down on 'NO NO, WHY MAKE A PIRATE GAME BY ITSELF STILL ADD ASSASSIN'S CREED SHIT IN IT'

I do actually think we'll see a new Ship-related IP at this year's E3 considering we know nothing about what's coming other than AC and South Park. Maybe that Rabbids game.

Naval combat again? Would the series improve on the core combat system? Make it more action oriented hack-n-slash and less assassins creedy Mr Creedy!

There are only 2 games in the past decade I regret buy and that is Assassin's Creed IV & Watch Dogs. I'm sticking to my whole no ubisoft games for a while.

Ubi really needs to start talking. We are discussing same rumors over and over again XD But again wait is nearly over game will be announced in next month (yeah E3 is month and few days away and that is last deadline).

Hope the main characters are good and well fleshed out, otherwise I'd rather play as one. Cautiously optimistic in general about the game.

so, to reiterate, unless it was feeling confident that Evie would prove be popular, this year's entry having a female protagonist exclusively isn't happening as two years simply isn't enough time

Empire/Origins or whatever has been in development since Black Flag shipped. I'm gonna say they started working on it in early 2014. Plenty of time to have a female MD protag. Evie was pretty well received anyway, and as much as I like Jacob, he wasn't.

I'm saying that if Ubi were waiting to see the general player response to Evie before signing off on a mainline entry having a female protagonist and only a female protagonist, then Origins isn't going be that title.

I said as much myself on the previous page. ;)
