Bloomberg: Apple to announce updated Macbooks at WWDC

Apple Inc. plans to announce an update to its laptop lineup at an annual conference for app developers in early June, a move that could help offset new competition from Microsoft Corp. as well as declining iPad sales.

Apple is planning three new laptops, according to people familiar with the matter. The MacBook Pro will get a faster Kaby Lake processor from Intel Corp., said the people, who requested anonymity to discuss internal planning. Apple is also working on a new version of the 12-inch MacBook with a faster Intel chip. The company has also considered updating the aging 13-inch MacBook Air with a new processor as sales of the laptop, Apple’s cheapest, remain surprisingly strong, one of the people said.

I have the 2016 MacBook and I'm pretty happy with it. Only major negative is that it feels like it's gonna blow up on my legs when I try and use chrome with it.

still running the MacBook Air Mid-13 and I am happy with it.
But glad to see they are still updating it.
Guess they will raise the prices of the new Airs. Cause reasons.

I for one am shocked that Apples cheapest laptop is a strong seller. Shocked I tell you.

Edit: They need to release a new desktop keyboard with the touchbar... ffs Apple it's not hard.

Yeah you're probably much better off using Safari and ditching flash IMO. Safari is made to conserve energy usage.

Curious. WWDC hasn't been a hardware-announcement venue for a while, but the rumors are getting loud and frequent enough at this point that it's difficult to dismiss them on precedent alone.

I wonder what Apple PR's story to tell is going to be - hardware *and* software announcements across multiple platforms seem trickier to juggle in terms of how you promote them to people.

I hope this just means it's going to be a huge WWDC and not that it's going to be a slow year for software/services updates.

I hope this is the gen they nail performance for the MacBook.

My Air is still working perfectly (from 2012) but whenever I upgrade I definitely want a higher res screen. With my needs I would probably go with the regular MB over the pro.

I am sure just like with the Air one of the revisions will nail both size and performance.

a "redesigned keyboard" is coming in the fall, alongside a new iMac that will have a high-end Xeon CPU configuration aimed at creative pros

Wonder what they'll remove from them this time.

now thats what i call edgy

Thank goodness. Thought about getting a new laptop earlier this year (mine is a mid-2012 Air, or at least that's when I got it) and decided all of their current offerings suck.

None of the MacBooks currently suit my needs. The Pro is out of this world expensive I don't have 3,000€ to spend on a MacBook. The Air's are outdated with their sub par screen resolution. The MacBook may suit my needs but I've never felt overly enthusiastic about the single port...

I'm excited about what they have to announce. I'm glad my windows laptop from 2013 has lasted this long.

Eep. Can I survive until the update? My mid-2012 15" rMBP has begun experiencing the occasional screen flicker. It's making me nervous.

I think the MacBook's basic performance as a functional email/web browsing/office work machine (i.e. a MacBook Air replacement) has been fine since its second generation; the issue for me is honestly the unresponsive keyboard. Apple straight up sabotaging the basic responsiveness of their notebook keyboards is such a confusing choice. You'd think absolutely nailing trackpads a few generations back would teach them the importance of having best-in-class input devices.

Let me know when there's a 15" MBP without the fucking touch bar and maybe I'll bite. Still have a my doubts about the keyboard and USB Type-C only is a headache.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

Ha, I have the same computer and it is starting to show its age.

Neat. I recently sold my 2010 iMac after picking up one of last year's 2016 Macbook Pros and I couldn't be happier.

My wife has a 2012 iMac that she wants to sell as well. I was considering picking her up a 12" Macbook but I figured I may as well wait it out and it looks like that was the right decision.

She actually wanted a Macbook Air but those are ancient these days so if Apple throws a retina screen into those a 13" model is a no-brainer for sure.

Hopefully they realized by now that the touchbar was an awful idea that NOBODY likes.

But then again this is modern day Apple we're talking about so probably not. They don't give a fuck about what their Mac userbase wants. The current Mac Pro being the ultimate proof of their hubris.

My 2008 MBP still remains one of the best laptops they've ever made. A machine actually justifying the "Pro" branding, with plenty of ports, and painless access to battery, hard drive, and RAM.

lol I am getting my internship relocation stipend the week this is happening and I don't even need to relocate. It's gonna be hard to resist.

Rats, I guess I'll wait for that kaby lake mbp. It's weird that they would update the pros that soon though.

Really? Mine just get really warm and I also run Twitch in the background.

It's a generally harmless idea tbh - people weren't using the function row a ton and Apple knew it.

The main issue I have with it is that it's sufficiently poorly integrated with most software that it does very little to enhance the experience, and that it takes up some internal room that I'd much rather see put to use housing more battery. It's annoying that there's a price premium attached when it doesn't add much at all to the experience or utility. I just don't think it actually *detracts* for all but a tiny minority of users.

The MBP update's probably pretty minor. Kaby Lake won't change much. I wonder if they'll keep the same GPUs, too - maybe they'll go to AMD's revised Polaris ala the 5xx line, but that also won't be a huge jump, either.

It'll have been eight months since the last update. Until the last few years, it wasn't uncommon for there to be two updates to a Mac line in the same year.

My 13" Late 2013 MBP still going strong, I fully expect this thing could last me another 5 years no problem.

That said, I'm a sucker for new hardware...

There may also be general price drops too relative to the 2016 model pricing.

A tiny minority? Bullshit, it's a total deal breaker for any software developer or IT admin. They even removed the physical Escape key. It's a stupid idea, period.

Interested to see what's in store for the MacBook (12-inch). I have a 13-inch MBP (Touch Bar), and I'll gladly sell it at a loss if it means I can move on to a MacBook with more than one USB port and a Touch ID sensor.

I have a MacBook Pro, but definitely want something light and portable as well. Have a Chromebook but want something in between.

Will keep an eye o the MacBook Air update.

At least on the MacOS side, I'd love for them to focus on creating a longer-term support release and get off the dumb yearly release schedule they've been hewing to. Other than stuff like "keep adding to their pro apps" and "this will be the year they rewrite iTunes" I dunno what software stuff I want from them besides software that runs fast and bug-free.

Preach, can't type on that thing.

Would love a 14" Macbook, but I doubt it'll ever happen now. Will keep an eye on this, though - might be some good deals on 12" Macbooks in the refurb store.

We shall see, but I think their offerings the last few years have been hugely disappointing. Whoever thought getting rid of the function keys was a good idea needs to be exiled to iTunes software dev land.

Hopefully the Pro update also comes with a price drop. It's seems like a nice computer, but still so expensive that it's impossible for me to justify.

I'm going to have to buy one eventually though. My 2012 MacBook Air is finally starting to show it's age a bit.

Interesting that they might update the Air. I figured that Apple would be dropping it soon and giving the MacBook a price drop and finally making it their entry level laptop. Guess it's taking them longer to get cost's down then they might have initially anticipated.

I was totally prepped to buy a new MBP with the last refresh but they lost me on that price. I'm still using a 2010 Pro that's barely holding out. I'm really hoping they cut the price back down even just a little bit and I'll definitely bite.
