Yakuza Community Thread - FEEL THE HEAT!

So, not that this is really a surprise, but a new Yakuza game is coming:
http://yakuzafan.com/next-yakuza-game-teased-new-protagonist-confirmed/

So I'm kinda feeling that we won't get a game this year, but maybe early next year (March in Japan) at the earliest? I'm not bothered with them taking their time to make the next game since my backlog will easily take me through the next year! Can't wait to see what the dragon engine looks like when its "complete". Despite its faults I loved Yakuza 6 and I know if they manage to get the remaining areas and main activities (that were absent in 6) back into the next game I'm fairly certain it'd end up as one of my favourite games ever. Just please keep expanding the arcade from 6, I want more classic Sega games dammit, preferably ones that were never ported to home consoles (or never had good ports).

And now the wait for TGS in September gets that little bit harder!

I just found out that some of the sub-stories are fully voiced and has cutscenes in Yakuza Kiwami. That's a big step up from previous Yakuza games.

The original first game has those sub stories. 2, Kenzan, 3 also have fully voiced sub stories.

Everything is fully voiced in 6. Might help explain why the number of side stories is lower compared to past games in the series. Still, I do approve of them all being voiced, helps add a little emotion into the side stories (and some of them are really well done).

So with the next Yakuza announcement teased for May 30th, time for some baseless speculation...

Seems strange that the game is getting announced so soon, I expected something in August at the earliest with a March 2018 release at the earliest. I'm wondering if its possible that Japan will get another Yakuza game this year. With that in mind, I wonder if we are getting a side game or Kiwami 2 while a proper sequel is released next year. That said, that goes against previous comments which made it sound like we are indeed getting a new game so who knows...

Makes me wonder if Japanese fans are hyped for the next game, after the somewhat lukewarm response to parts of Yakuza 6...

Kiwami 2 would be perfect. Would mean I can keep playing through the story after I beat Y0.

Can someone please tell me what the point of premium adventure is besides free roam? I thought you can easily do side stories, but I loaded up a save and cant find any side stories to do.

Also im pretty sure dead souls is the first game to have fully voiced side stories not three.

They should be there. You can only do substories that you haven't done already though.

You can do pretty much anything that you can in the main-game. But like I said, you can't repeat content. You have to start a new game for that.

Theres nothing on my map and ill walk around trying to find some random event. Nothing. I must be doing something wrong.

Premium Adventure mode lets you do side missions, mini games, the completion list etc. Basically anything but story missions. But you still need to trigger the side missions themselves by being in a certain spot/meeting certain requirements. I can't comment why they aren't spawning, so I'd recommend taking a look at the side story completion list in your in game menu, then checking out this guide to work out which side stories you are short.: http://www.khhsubs.com/rggzero/substories.html

Also, regarding fully voiced side stories, depends on what you mean. The first game has a few side stories that are voiced (mainly the special ones which feature Haruka), Dead Souls still featured mostly text only cut scenes. The only game that features 100% voiced side stories is 6.

All substories have a fixed spot where they start from. Maybe you're having trouble finding them.

You can use a guide if you REALLY don't want to bother with wandering around aimlessly, depending on which Yakuza you're playing. Yakuza 0 has an item that lets you locate substories, and Yakuza 5 points them out to you on the map, you never have to worry about finding them randomly.

During my search for a cheaper Yakuza 4 than what's on Amazon, I went to my local game store. Still couldn't find it, but came out with Dead Souls and Kenzan. I only know like five kanji so this is going to be fun once I get around to it.

Hey guys, I finished Yakuza 0 the other day and I loved it. I loved it that much that I've bought Yakuza 3, 4 and 5 on PS3 and I really want to start playing them. However, with Yakuza Kiwami coming out in a couple months I don't know to wait to play that before moving on to the others or if I should just play 3, 4 and 5 anyway and play Kiwami when it comes out in August. What do you guys think is best?

The issue with jumping into the next Yakuza games with Kiwami coming out is that some of the details might get spoiled. There's one plot point in particular that's referenced in every single Yakuza game that takes placed after 1 as it's what defines Kiryu's status in this universe.

You're gonna be spoiled on that, but if you're fine with that then jump on to Yakuza 3. Play that game until Kiwami comes out.

Once it does come out, play Kiwami after Yakuza 3.

Then once you're finished with Kiwami, play Yakuza 4 and then 5.

Admittedly that plot point is not a MAJOR spoiler as it doesn't really spoil anything particular or give away the ending in any significant way for Kiwami but it is still something.

Thanks luce. If the plot point isn't major then I think I'll take the risk and move on to 3. I'd love to wait for Kiwami, but I just want to keep playing these games lol.

The start of Yakuza 3 is gonna be VERY slow as compared to 0, just remember that.

Like really slow. It's kinda nice, it's not BORING but not much happens at the start.

It's also worth noting that Kiryu has done some incredibly badass stuff in Yakuza 1 and 2 so he just wants to have a calm life now (in Y3).

Cool, I'll keep that in mind, thanks. Just starting the game up now.

Sup YakuzaGAF.

Saw this OT and thought it about time I dropped in and said hi. I got into Yakuza after hearing a lot of praise about it somewhere around 2012. It actually took me like 2 years to get through Yakuza 1 because I kept stopping at certain points. When I wanted to continue, so much time had passed that I had completely forgotten the story and had to start over. After that I finished 2 - 4 in between and now. Currently I'm playing 5 (I just started
Haruka's
chapter). One thing I'm kind of confused about is during Saejima's chapter, where he
kidnaps Kitakata
. Saejima used
the airshow as a distraction to grab Kitakata. But are they expecting me to believe that absolutely everyone was looking at the sky (including all the cops and the snipers on the roof(!))?

On another note, I enjoyed playing as just Kiryu in 3 much more than 4 and 5's multiple playable characters. I mean, I'm all for having multiple playable characters that have different playstyles but I'd much rather pick a someone at the start of the game and keep playing as that character rather than being forced to switch mid-game.

That plot point on 5 made my head spin. I still can't get my head round it. Then again just a couple of chapters back Kiryu dodges a missile with almost no effort so I guess its just suspension of disbelief. But its still a really annoying plot point that really should have been written better.

As for the multiple characters. I think 0 finally hit the sweet spot in this regard. 2 characters is just enough for a coherent story plus you jump back and fourth every couple of chapters which just felt way better compared to the way 4 and 5 handled things. Hopefully the next game does a similar thing if its to feature more than one character.

Yeah, the whole missile thing was pretty ridiculous, even for Yakuza. I was like "Seriously?" when I saw it.

Thanks for the info! I'm quite looking forward to playing 0 myself. From like the 20 minutes I played, the increased graphical fidelity and smoother framerate left a very good impression on me.

Don't get me wrong, I bloody loved the missile bit, it cracked me up. Kiryu being so used to shit going down that he barely flinches. Biggest badass in gaming.

But yeah, the smoothness of 0 (and Ishin and Kiwami) is such a welcome upgrade. Really makes the fights feel way better, I'm still kinda upset that 6 goes back to 30 FPS (but I love the new flashy graphics and lack of loading when exploring the city so its not all bad!)

Just started Yakuza Ishin. What an opening. Also got the khhsubs translation/guide on my iPad ready.

The ending might be my favourite in the entire series. The last few boss fights + the music used) is brilliant. The final boss especially is probably the best in the series in terms of gameplay and scene transitions/cutscenes.

After playing y0 for review, this is the first time I've booted up a yakuza game. God it feels great to be back. Thanks for that. I'm even more hyped.

YES I REMEMBER THIS!

I saw it a long time ago about a character that looked like a cheap ripoff of Kiryu and was about the yakuza on jeuxvideo but I could never find it again on the account of not knowing the games name.

EDIT: Wait what this game came out before Yakuza, wow! D:

Finally went back to Yakuza 4 after Persona 5 took me hostage for almost a month! The multiple protagonists approach has been interesting so far, but I'm not sure I'm sold on it yet, it feels like I always switch to a new one right when I'm starting to feel comfortable with their stories and playstyles... I made it to part 3 yesterday, ending Saejima's introduction.

Saejima has been very interesting. His meeting with Haruka was... Uncomfortable to say the least, but that aside his character seems pretty cool, some highlights being his victory at the coliseum, his showdown with Kazuma at the beach (GOD DAMN) and his fight against Majima (I'm loving the focus on Majima!). His moveset started very rough though, especially playing on Hard... Getting used as a tennis ball by enemies because Saejima is too slow to recover from anything and having few resources to deal with mobs sucked, but he become pretty fun later on, I love grappler kind of characters after all.

I have a question though: is Majima's bond with Kazuma ever explained in detail? In Y1 he was some sort of maniac rival character who had an odd respect for Kazuma, but in 2 and especially in 3 he's a very reliable bro who'd do anything for him. So is there a game where the original of their friendship is explained or even hinted? I'm a bit worried because I read that eveb 0 barely has them interact :(

Oh by the way, I love that Majima got a Receive You arrangement for his battle theme again! I don't think he had one in Y3. I'm a bit disappointed in the soundtracks post Y2 overall, but there are at least some highlights in every game.

Nope no origin. They just have a mutual respect for each others abilities and status within the family. After how often the Tojo Clan gets bailed out by Kiryu and how often Majima is there to assist him is the reason it's a sort of friendship/one sided rivalry later in the series.

Though the Majima/Kazuma friendship is expanded upon a little more in Kiwami.

Majima was actually a sort of "surprise breakthrough" character, the devs weren't expecting him to be so popular which is why he has a larger role and is made more badass as the series goes on. It kinda reminds me of the Janitor from that TV show, Scrubs. The Janitor was supposed to be just a figment of the protagonist's daydreaming but he was so popular with fans that he was turned into a full-fledged recurring character.

Sums it up well. Majima always felt pretty badass even in the original Yakuza due to his pretty tough boss fight (plus I think
he's the only character you fight twice bar Shimano
.) That and it helped that he was voiced by Mark Hamill in the dub, so he instantly had my attention!

We don't have an import thread for Yakuza 6, right? Can I discuss it here ( w/ spoiler tags of course)?

Regarding the next game in the series, I'm hoping for a new period game or a Black Panther remake/reboot.

We didn't have any import OT, those of us that have played it just posted our impressions of it in here (with spoiler tags).

Its getting closer at least to the point where we will hear more about the next game, I'm getting more impatient by the day! (thankfully Shovel Knight and Persona 5 keeps me distracted). I just hope we get some tangible info at the end of the month rather than a vague teaser - I'd be happy just knowing the setting and main character for the next game (since they are building on the existing engine, I see them reusing Kamuracho again, that is the only thing I'm certain on at the moment).

No, we don't have an OT for RGG6. Neogaf's RGG6 players talk about it in this thread.

I like the idea of rebooting Black Panther. I don't say I like Black panther's story but I do like its battle system more than the main series.

edit; We are supposed to have some information or a teaser of the new game in this month??

幽霊との自撮り写真どうやって取れるんですかね?

Am I missing something with the Yakuza 6 collectibles? I've picked up a few, but I was under the impression that I can take selfies in the same spot. Is there some trick to it?

nvm: the photos seem to work after looking at them in my album. Is there any point in collecting them all rewardwise?

So yeah I ended up finishing Yakuza 4 last night. Whew, what a ride! I think my main complaint would be that the game felt too short for having 4 playable characters, so in the end you barely spend significant time with them. I expected a couple more chapters after they were all introduced, but nope, the finale was already happening... I hope 5 and newer games improve on this aspect.

Still, the rest was pretty great. Akiyama and Tanimura were lots of fun to play as and very likeable. Tanimura especially surprised me because I didn't expect to like him, but his story was very good and the way all the plot lines interconnected and were even liked to the first game's is nuts, I love how rewarding it is to have played all the games without skipping entries, because the way characters and stories progress with each game is very significant.

So yeah, awesome game (except the very final boss was shit on Hard and had to cheese him!), I'm EXTREMELY excited to dive into 5, but I want to play Dead Souls too (I know, I know), maybe I'll play both on parallel. How long is the latter?

Though the Majima/Kazuma friendship is expanded upon a little more in Kiwami.

Right, that's how I interpreted it. I saw that making of Yakuza YT series and it was funny to find out the director wasn't even sure the VA suit him, pretty hilarious in retrospect since he's so damn charming! It's kinda disappointing to read their relationship isn't detailed much but I guess it's good enough as it is.

5's probably the longest game in the series, if you only focus on story its probably 20 hours, but if you stop to do any of the side stuff then you'll be looking at a far higher figure.

Dead Souls though is pretty short, even doing all the side stuff won't take you anywhere near as long as other games. Its been a while since I played through that one so I forget how long it is, but you probably could get through it fairly quick if you wanted to. I can't hate the game myself. Its not great, but it still has that Yakuza charm (and Majima) to it.

Its also great to see Sega releasing PC ports recently - like the original Bayonetta and Vanquish. Hopefully they keep it up and get the Yakuza games on PC, having some of them running at better frame rates/resolutions would be fantastic (especially Dead Souls which could really use a frame rate boost).

Dead souls is short. Its fun but pretty flawed. I want to replay it my self. Was doing some sub stories but completely forgot how to play it.

My God, Yakuza 6/the Dragon Engine is optimised very poorly. Long load times, screen tearing and dipping frame rates. Most of the time I don't mind it but it's even noticeable to me when Kazuma enters a building.

Also, is it just me or does pressing the PS button NOT pause the game?

@above: I spent more than 150 hours on 5 the first time. Lol

Yeah, you really want a Pro if you want to run 6 better - no screen tearing and a stable 30FPS frame rate. Doesn't fix the initial load time though (that's still long) but at least the lack of load times in the city (outside of some select mini games) sorta mitigates that issue for me. Be interesting to see if they can get things running more smoothly for base units for the next game.

Made me consider getting a pro for the first time.
Lol

Anyone know what the update for Yakuza 6 does?

Which one? The game was updated several times over the course of a few months. Most of the updates were just to give you a new costume to use in premium adventure mode with a couple of general bug fixes/minor performance improvements in one of the later patches. Nothing all that amazing.
