NPD Sales Results For April 2017 [Up: Sony and Microsoft now sharing digital numbers]

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Depends, you including Wii U?
Cause then it's closer to 1.7mm. But that's only if you combine

That should mean approximately 300k in March for Zelda (Switch+Wii U) if that number includes digital (in March, Zelda sold about 1,385,000 copies retail + digital).

John, two questions if you can answer

1) Is Switch's top 5 all above 50,000?
2) What were LCU's shares between the different versions?

I brought this up in the March thread but no one responded.

Proobably because it's a retailer exclusive. The same happened back when Xenoblade Chronicles was released in US, only available at GameStop.

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.

Top 4, and Switch highest

I thought Amazon sold it too but after checking it looks to be resellers. Didn't know it was GameStop exclusive.

Incredible performance from P5, I'm genuinely shocked it came in 2nd.
I really think P4G was key to bringing the series to newcomers like myself!

Also, impressive performance from MLB. Quietly plugging away there.

Expected top 3, much lower shipment than expected for Switch in April.
Horizon ending up much more popular in Europe than in the US for some reason.

I'm expecting MK8D, Injustice 2, Minecraft, GTA to be top of the charts during May, can't think of any other major release that month - so if Zelda maintains high attach rate it might also make the top 5.

Microsoft sharing digital numbers for Minecraft as it releases on the Switch is going to give us a much better idea about the size of digital customers on the Switch. It's 20 for April with digital - so if it really sees a big jump it will be all down to the Switch port.

MK8D is guaranteed to reach a million in the US in it's second month - it's just a matter of whether Injustice will be able to beat it. Personally I think in the end MK8D will take May as well unless there is a shortage of new Switch owners.
Mortal Kombat X opened well over a million in its debut month, so unless Injustice 2 completely tanks in comparison, it will trivially take the month.

Mass Effect is still selling pretty well, especially on the Xbox chart. Maybe they shelved the franchise prematurely. Anyone know if they have canned any plans for DLC on it too?

I just checked and does anybody find it weird that ME:A charted higher than Horizon on both months but Horizon still sold more than it overall? When Sony/MS includes digital sales, is it only for the month or do they retroactively add to the previous months?

March
Year To Date (all 2017 months combined):
5. Mass Effect: Andromeda (Electronic Arts)
7. Horizon: Zero Dawn (Sony)

April
Best selling games of 2017 through April:
4. Horizon Zero Dawn
5. Mass Effect: Andromeda

March 2017:
3. Mass Effect: Andromeda ** (Electronic Arts)
4. Horizon: Zero Dawn * (Sony)

April 2017:
7. Mass Effect: Andromeda**
12. Horizon Zero Dawn

Sony (and Microsoft) digital numbers went live this month (April). We do not retroactively correct past rankings because at the time of publication those rankings reflect the data that NPD had. To answer your question about Mass Effect and Horizon Zero Dawn, if Sony digital numbers for March were included in the count, than Horizon would have outsold Mass Effect.

That is the way the cookie crumbles.

Lovely result for Persona. Japanese games don't matter, etc.

NES @ 2 because of the discontinuation. I'm dreading the stampede for the SNES Classic, what have you unleashed Ninty?

I don't know if I expected too much but I feel like H:ZD didn't perform too well, it's on the leading platform, an open world action RPG, best visuals in gaming, it was supposed to do much better but Zelda is easily selling more on a new platform with barely any users, it has already disappeared from the top 10, even blops 2 sold more this month for crying out loud! it got zero legs.

I wouldn't call it a failure but it is disappointing commercially.

They mentioned a few weeks back that it had sold over 2.8 million copies.

Probably reached 4 million by now. I would say it's a big success. It's still selling and I think (hope) they'll bundle it later.

Good debuts for recently released exclusives, blatant/obvious example that shows that people care about backwards compatibility and that Microsoft is smart in continuing to support and push it in this more digital age -- overall one of the most interesting and diverse NPD results in a long time.

Not sure if serious...especially when compared to zelda...when it's sold more than the console itself....and it's zelda, a prestigious IP with alot of legacy and tons of hype after the reviews and also arrive at the midst of a new console launch. To put it in perspective, almost every early PS4 launch title was a million seller (yes, including Knack and Killzone shadow Fall) and the reason is due to limited available titles at launch thus almost any titles will sell well....let alone a superhyped zelda.

i don't really get what you meant by zero legs.

also comparing it to blops2 is weird. blops2 is the best selling cod of all time, it itself is 'only' the 2nd best selling console franchise (below GTA).......blops2 even outsold infinite warfare!

Have you just read the OP and then come in to post?

Best selling games of 2017 through April:
1. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands
2. For Honor
3. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
4. Horizon Zero Dawn
5. Mass Effect: Andromeda
6. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
7. Grand Theft Auto V
8. NBA 2K17
9. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
10. MLB 17: The Show

4th biggest seller so far in 2017 and the ONLY single-platform title in this top 10.

But yeah, clearly a failure. WTF are you smoking.

Wow @ Black Ops 2. That's based on revenue ain't it and it was also cheap as chips? Hot damn, BC.

I hope this cures the GAF myth that no one uses BC...

I hope the success of Persona 5 leads Atlus to put more SMT games on PS4. Last gen the only SMT games on PS3 were the P4A games and Catherine.

Ok so let me get this straight. You did not change the March rankings BUT the March digital numbers for Horizon is included in the "Best Sellers of the Year" list, right?

It's a new SP IP that is on one system that must have sold near 1.4 million by now in USA.
I would say that is pretty good.
Zelda is a IP that has been around for 30 years and still strong to this day .

Yep.

NES Classic could have easily sold 10+ million in lifetime sales.

Leaving money on the table.

The only way it'll do that is if they relinquish manufacturing and distribution to a third party, and they don't want to do that ever.

Also it'd probably undermine their virtual console catalogue if these were still readily available.

Dat Black Ops 2. Serves me right for disrespecting backward compatibility 😐

Is it safe to say that Xbox somewhat rescued Mass Effect because the platform didn't have HZD and BOTW?

Yeah, it's slightly disappointing when you consider in the size of the install base on the PS4.

That's good. If I recall correctly, did you tell us that third party ports for the Wii U during its launch period generally performed terribly, and that some sales were even in the 4 digits?

I'd be interested in the sales split or ranking for Puyo Puyo Tetris. In the UK 76% of copies sold were on Switch which surprised me, as the game costs nearly double the price of the PS4 version, and it launched alongside Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. There was also no digital release on PS4, which I thought would drive retail sales on that format.

Horizon's doing just fine. Consider that only 1 PS4 exclusive has crossed 2 million in America. Horizon will join it soon.

Kinda puts into perspective why Xbox has been able hold onto so much marketshare though. Nearly 4 years since launch and only 1 big exclusive for Sony. Their first party this gen has been atrocious, really.

HZD sales aren't disappointing. It is just selling less in the US than in Europe. It is like saying that Zelda sales are disappointing in Japan because it has a lower attach rate despite outselling SS already.

Size isn't the end all, be all of sales. Zelda continuously sold because of the popularity of the Switch and it's pretty much being the only console seller until Mario arrived.

What is your definition of "big" pray tell?

Yes. The charts you see for YTD and 12 months rolling reflect latest data. When more publishers join digital sharing with us the greater the accuracy the lists will get. We do not retroactive correct charts.

The 2 million club, population: Uncharted 4.

I'm just saying. The console has been out for a long time and Sony's biggest hitters from last gen (Santa Monica, Media Molecule, Polyphony) still haven't put out a damn game.

It's tragic. They let Microsoft catch up.

LMAO...what are you smoking? If Sony's 1st party for this gen is bad, then the rest of probaby in the gutter? Unless that's bait?

what other MS IP other than the Gears, Halo, Forza (in which both Gears & Halo are in decline) are in the 2 million club this gen? Do tell...
