It's hard to believe that we're in 2017 and 60 frames isn't standard on consoles

I don't care about games being 60fps other than few genres that I feel it's important for me (racing games, character action game, FPS, Fighting game). Of course if I had to chose 30fps or 60fps with everything else in same condition, I would choose 60fps. But with console's limited specs sometimes I would rather have stable 30fps with a bit better visuals than 60fps with bit worse visuals.
I played Nioh in 30fps cinematic mode rather than 60fps action mode on my base PS4. And if there was similar option with Nier Automata where 30fps mode would give higher resolution and better visual fidelity, I would have chosen that instead of the base 60fps mode.

Consoles will never have 60fps standard.

I have no idea why.

PS1, didn't, PS2 didn't, PS3 sure as hell didn't, and it looks like PS4 doesn't look too great. I'm gonna go ahead and say PS5 will be the same.

Forums like this and news outlets at the beginning of the generation made a big deal about resolution. It still sticks today. This generation was all about resolution first and FPS a distant second.

People that have been only playing on consoles for a long time have a harder time to distinguish the difference between 30 and 60 fps.

It's dumb, and compounded by the fact that tons of games ran at 60fps during the PS2 era. Everything shit the bed when HD hit.

Tons of games ran at 60fps in the NES era too. But it's not always necessary. Metal Slug runs at 30 and still feels fun to play.

The average gamer doesn't really care about 60fps like that, so developers will opt for a better looking game at 30fps. There is always pc if you need your frame rate fix.

It won't ever be, some prioritize eye candy and others performance.

The year has nothing to do with it and 60fps will never be the standard.

It was the standard 30 (!) years ago. And I can assure you we all cared about eye candy then too.

Developers could choose to make every game 60fps if they wanted to. They don't

Exactly. It's all about developer priorities, and too many of them don't care about basic playability and feel.

With 60 frames, your eyes are having to interpret double the frames compared to 30 fps.

This causes your eyes to deteriorate twice as quickly.

60 fps literally makes you go blind more quickly. Say no to 60 fps.

60fps or higher (with gsync especially) is very obviously better than 30fps if all else is equal, but it's rare that all else is equal and in some situations settling for a lower framerate is a worthwhile tradeoff

i can't understand weighing performance so strongly that you would put it above literally every other element of a game's design and pass on a game that otherwise appeals to you in every possible way

Not for certain games and genres. Have you played a 30FPS fighting game recently? How about a 30FPS racing game? Shoot em ups? Platformers?

This is a good point but in other genres a solid 30fps with good motion blur and stunning graphics is preferable for me. I never once thought to myself while playing uncharted 4"I wish this game was 60fps." Not sure why exactly, maybe a combonion between excellent animation and motion blur idk bUT Co trolling drake combat felt good.

Fighting game : Bushido blade
Racing game : Driveclub
Shoot em up :Destiny

Never felt any of them were lacking.

I understand that some people do find 30fps games frustrating though.

Me and people like me are the reason devs continue to target 30fps, so sorry about that.

In this day and age it's hard to believe that there are people that still don't understand that console game developers will often go for graphics over performance.

Also I'd be willing to bet that most pc gamers don't get 60fps on the games they play because the image of what a pc gamer is to you doesn't represent the vast majority of people who play games on pc.

That's why I try to keep my PC up to date, to be honest.

I like consoles and will always buy games for them (at least the exclusive ones) but if my PC can handle the game at a higher framerate than what is possible on consoles then I will sure as hell prefer the PC version of that game.

I too find it sad that consoles don't even get the option of unlocking the framerate, no matter how good or bad it will run.

Never realized how many are so bitter over the notion of having games nice and smooth. It's like the shittier the better or something.

What?

It's not that at all.

It's the notion that you think the year/power has anything to do with 60 fps, when in reality it's up to the developer's discretion to decide what they want to prioritize, which most of us prefer.

Its not hard to believe at all. 60fps is really hard from what it sounds like. I've heard devs talk about how it actually takes more than twice the clock cycles of 30fps.

You have to have the commitment from the beginning and willingness to make a lot of sacrifices to the effects and visuals or even type of game you are making.

Very few people give a fuck, myself included. I play games to have fun, not to beancount and act like a giant asshole about inconsequential aspects I have no direct control over. People need to stop fetishizing this bullshit.

Why do you often sound so angry, man?

It's OK to disagree with the OP, but damn, calm down.

I think it's pretty clear that more and more big-name releases have been multiplatform as the years have gone on. Up to the mid-2000s the big PC games were largely built for PC from the ground up, and because of that performance was all over the place and very often not 60fps. Very few people, if any, were playing Deus Ex or Half-Life 2 at 60fps on release.

During the 360 generation, though, most big releases were multiplatform and built with the 360 as a baseline and PCs were running absolute circles around consoles to a degree that hadn't really happened in the past. That's when you could build a relatively affordable machine that would often be able to play new releases at 60.

It's hard for me to believe that people don't understand that graphics sell games not framerate. Most gamers out there that aren't reading gaf every day don't know what framerate is or give a shit about it if they do. I'll take horizon zd at 30 over anything released on pc and yes I have a gaming pc with a 1080gtx.

It's easier to market pretty graphics than smooth gameplay. Most people don't care about fps.
They dont know what 60vs30 is but they subconsciously do care when theyre playing the shit out of 60fps Overwatch, Madden etc. over shitty 30fps games.

every game ever created could be 60 fps if sacrifices were made in other areas. The year is not a factor in the framerate. Sheesh!

I hate the "IT'S THIS YEAR AND WE STILL DON'T HAVE HOVERBOARDS WTF" argument. It doesn't matter what year it is. There are still hardware limitations that developers have to work within.

It's not a standard, and games can still be good on 30fps. Sometimes putting resources into certain areas outweighs putting them into others. I would prefer the option to choose in each game if possible, but unfortunately, I don't see that becoming a standard anytime soon.

If you want the best options for a game, you should probably be playing PC. If you prefer the console experience, you're going to be playing some games on 30fps.

Microsoft's Phil Spencer, Aaron Greenberg have been hyping the powerful specs of the Xbox Scorpio. I'm expecting 1080p 60fps in every game. 4K will likely only be 60fps on Forza and the less cutting edge games.

The PS5 generation will bring 4K 60fps.

It'll bring 1440p - 4k and a split between 30 and 60 fps similar to this gen.

It's hard to believe that we're in 2017 and some people on a "hardcore" gaming forum still have no idea how video game development works.

Don't worry I'm sure when the PS5 and the Xbox equivalent comes out every game will be 60fps......sigh

Lol . I actually have a good reason to have some minimum frame rate .... Below 30 is very jerky and definitely gives me dizzy spells. So I vastly prefer 60 but if it was rock solid 30 it would probably be okay. The bigger issue is that 30 often becomes 28, then 22 , etc

Destiny is an 1st Person Shooter, not a Shoot Em Up. I'm talking about games like Radiant Silvergun.

First and foremost this requires noticing the vast differences between a computer monitor and a digital TV.

30 is perfectly fine. Sure GAF has a concentration of 60fps zealots but for the vast majority of game consumers out there it's not even on their radar.

Human eyes cant even see anything faster the 30 fps
Cool fps thread op 😊😊

60fps will never be a standard on console until we get to the point where consoles are powerful enough that it's not feasible for a developer to push visual fidelity to the console's limits due to the budget that would be required to do so.
