DF: "PC Vanquish is Every Bit as Good as you Would Hope" (PC vs. PS3 Comparison)

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
Oh shit. I just noticed they put the install button. When the hell did that happen? I checked like 12 hours ago and nada. :D

Good to see the port is good. Though I'm hearing that rebinding keys isn't possible for keyboard and mouse.

How's the mouse controls? Does it support raw mouse input?
I'm not sure about raw mouse input, to be honest, but the mouse and keyboard work very well in this game. In fact, it's easier to do certain moves with this control scheme and aiming is faster than ever. It's a lot easier to play Vanquish with mouse and keyboard than something like Bayonetta, as you'd expect.

This is how you do it publishers. Create a good PC port at a decent price and you get sales. It's not rocket science.

John is on fire in the last weeks! Good video, I'm so glad I can finally play this at 60fps. I think this is one of these games which really needed it the most.

That's the thing, you should be able to readjust the shutter speed. In a lot of console ports running at 60fps on PC the motion blur just disappears into the ether.
I mean, that's intentional.
Video is typically shot with a 180° shutter, which basically means that the shutter speed is twice the framerate.
  • So 24 FPS has a 1/48s shutter speed.
  • 30 FPS would have a 1/60s shutter speed.
  • 60 FPS would have a 1/120s shutter speed.
Higher framerates need less motion blur to produce smooth motion.
It's not supposed to be there as an "effect", it's there to reduce stroboscopic artifacts.

I do wish that games had more options for motion blur than simply on/off though.
I like object motion blur, but I really hate camera motion blur.
And I guess that some people like yourself would like the option to turn up the motion blur as an "effect".

Hoping I can get it running at a reasonable level on my HTPC in my living room. I wanna play this on my big TV for sure. The only gotcha is the cpu is pretty old. i5-2500k and a GTX950. I'd think I can coax 1080p60 out of it though with some tweaking.

It's gonna look fantastic on my actual gaming rig though (i7-6700 and a GTX 1080) . Can't wait to get off work and play around with it.

Fuck me the game is as incredible today as it was when first released. Even more so with all the pc framerate and improvements. I just played the first two chapters and had a smile on my face the whole way.

This is so good to hear. That being said, I'm kinda surprised how well Bayo worked with M+KB (but I'd choose controller any day for that game)

The game has serious aliasing. Downsampling doesn't seem to improve it for me and the edge AA option doesn't look like it's doing something either. The aliasing in this game combined with the pixelated interface is so horrendous that it makes the game look like it runs at a low resolution while it's not.

Game still has a little bit of motion blur even off, and it runs great. I can't get over 144 fps but it hovers around 90 to 100 fps. Using an i5-4670k stock and a GTX 570.

For reference I absolutely hate playing games like this with a kb/m and I really enjoyed playing this with a mouse so far. I did not notice any mouse smoothing/lag, I am %99 sure it is raw mouse input. Controls are as solid as it gets.

I don't get it, there's a full menu of graphics stuff and 5 different AA options and they say it's not a lot of options?

Yeah. I fell in love with object motion blur ever since i played Lost Planet.

But i also can't stand "full" motion blur.

So I can get pretty close to 60fps on MGR on my 650m if I crank everything down. Would my PC be able to handle Vanquish at 60?

They make comparisons to Bayonetta but not to MGR.

Definitely gonna play this at 1440p on my 970 later

hows the actual game though? is it funsies?

One of my favorite shooters of all time

No. It's even better now.

Gotta agree. It looks so nice on PC from the videos I've seen.

Won't be picking it up having platted it a few years back on PS3-- and in the process becoming one of my favorite TPS games of all time-- but man am I envious of you folks that have never played this and will experience it for the first time with frame rates that do the action justice.

Does DF not own higher refresh displays? It'd be kind of weird since 144hz is a lot more common than 4k, especially among FPS players.

Dark why do your videos always have unnecessarily long pauses in them? Like "But its roots in last generation consoles preventing it from reaching...............its full potential" and "Its possible to..........greatly increase shadow resolution here on the PC".

Not a problem really just something I noticed.

For dramatic intent? It doesn't work?

Not surprised it's more demanding than Bayonetta. After all, one targeted 60 FPS on consoles while the other 30.

It's ridiculous how just a bit of better filtering and higher frame rate can improve the looks of a game.

Btw I disabled in-game vsync and I set it up through Nvidia's control panel, since the in-game one is just double buffered like Bayo.

I'm running it at just a DSR step below 4k with a 1080 (probably I could push it to 4k no problem but I just want to be sure about no frame drops) and it's wonderful.

Yea, this port is damn good.

I'm getting a solid 60fps with the default high setting.

I have an old AMD Phenom II X4 965, Radeon 7870, and 16GB of DDR3 RAM.
Running at 900p (cause I still have a 900p monitor).

I'm very happy.

I took two pics of the tutorial:
