Movies that you thought were lighthearted but were actually really dark

Best movie to fit this that I can think of is Saturday Night Fever.

You think it's gonna be about dancing because that's the only scene you see people mention
tumblr_nhid1bozJu1rtmwk6o1_500.gif

but then you see all of these subplots about betrayal and reality and unplanned pregnancy and suicide and assault and suddenly the dancing plot is the last thing on your mind. Have you ever had a movie catch you off guard like that?

The Truman Show caught me off guard in a major way. Jim Carrey in a high-concept premise that seems ripe for comedy.

It's not really a comedy. It's some dark shit and I cried my eyes out.

Click.

Expected fart and dick jokes in typical Adam Sandler fanfare. Got that.

And then the movie goes through an existential crisis and it legitimately got me teary.

Yup, this. Similar situation with Adam Sandler's Click (perhaps the only Adam Sandler movie I enjoyed)

Edit: damn it chrisPjelly.

Pan's Labyrinth caught me way off guard. I thought it was gonna be a cute story about a young girl going through some fantasy land with weird creatures. That movie was fucked up, man. That wine bottle scene...

I think robin williams has some good ones for me.

What dreams may come always looks like a lighthearted take on the afterlife and how wonderful it could be... and then... the second half of the movie happens.

or bicentienal man, which looks like a movie where robin just plays a robot. but again... the second half of the movie happens.

Lol. This. I knew the fantasy itself would be scary/dark... but I was not ready for that violence.

Oh fuck, this one too. I knew it was a dark fairy tale, but not that dark. I watched it with my wife who was abjectly horrified when one of the fairies got its head bitten off. Then the wine bottle scene, jesus.

La Vita e Bella is a charming romantic comedy about a clumsy Jewish-Italian man who tries to woo a beautiful woman.
And then the Nazis happen and his family gets sent to a concentration camp.

Lego Batman, while it was pretty light-hearted, the scene after
Joker turns all the villains in at the party, essentially removing the sole purpose of Batman
hit pretty hard

I knew The Warriors was gonna be a little rough around the edges, but I kinda just expected a bunch of smartasses wisecracking their way through New York like a bunch of young John McClanes. But that movie's just... grody. Not to derail thread, but that movie's bad and it just feels like shit watching it.

Sandler is one of those guys that's like M. Bay in that they have chops and can do good shit when they want to, but choose to go to the dark side because it makes them more dosh. Kind of sad too, because I think if Sandler actually gave a fuck he could be a pretty decent actor with a nice filmography under his belt.

i don't know how to respond to this

Don't. Let those comments fade silently into the internet abyss.

Anyway, my answer is Babe: Pig In The City. Great movie. The tone picks up by the end, but there's some old school children story weirdness in the middle.

This. I was expecting this to be a Pan's Labyrinth thread, actually. The US marketing for it was pretty misleading from what I remember. Enjoyed the hell out of the movie, but it wasn't what I was expecting at all. I didn't even know it would be subtitled going into it lol

Oh, I got one. Man of the Year starring Robin Williams. They marketed as a comedian (Williams) becoming President and all the hilarity that would follow. It's actually this oddly dark political thriller though.

Adam Sandler is a con man and a criminal. he is not an artist. he is 100% scum and that piece of shit should be in prison.

EDIT: also, Sandler having a "nice filmography under this belt"? ... hahahahahahahhahaha

Lilo and Stich has a lot of very sad undertones / moments outside of the kiddy action scenes. Surprised me watching it when I got older and realizing how bleak nani's situation is.

Manchester by the Sea.

I remember the trailers making it look like one of those coming of age indie films.

What a depressing movie that turned out to be.

Reading comprehension is hard I guess?

the fact that you believe in some possible universe he might have a somewhat decent filmography is fucking hilarious

no man, just no. has nothing to do with how "hard" he's trying. he just fucking sucks and is a con man criminal POS.

Went in expecting a silly "sexy comedy" starring Jim Carrey.

These two are the only ones that have genuinely caught me by surprise, mainly cause I only watched them when I was younger because of Jim Carrey. "Yay more goofy faces" or something is what I expected.

Recently re-watched The Truman Show and goddamn does it still get me pretty emotional. Absolutely fantastic movie.

Blimblim

The Inside Track
Grave of the Fireflies
"It's a Ghibli movie, let's watch it as I need something lighthearted since I'm feeling a bit depressed"
Best idea ever.

Does that 30 minute video somehow substantiate your claim that Sandler should be in prison? 'Cause even if it does, I'm not going to watch it.

Use your words. What's your beef with him?

There was this branching off point earlier in his career where he could have gone down one of a few different paths, once he was successful. He showed in a few films that he had decent range and acting ability - I really liked him in Spanglish, and while I haven't seen them yet I hear good things about both Click and Punch-Drunk Love. But he went the easy way out and tossed out any pretense of integrity along the way, and turned into what he is now. The RLM video was spot on. It actually makes me kinda sad.

There's an alternate timeline where follows Jim Carrey's path (which isn't perfect, but has some real gems in there - Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine). Carrey could have gone down the road Sandler did, but didn't.

The scene right after his boat has crashed into the wall and he's just beating on it, trying to will it out of existence, just crushes me. I saw it again a few years ago as well, and was surprised how well it held up. Carrey gave a great performance.

you can prob start at part 2 of the vid and be fine, although you should really watch both parts

fair enough, I haven't seen Spanglish but I believe it wasn't released under Happy Madison Productions? it would explain why it might actually be a watchable film

the shit RLM covers in the video I linked in regards to what he's doing nowadays is beyond depressing and just outright frightening

Adam Sandler is a bad, bad, bad person. I really wish more people would watch that RLM video.

I kind of went into Apocalypse Now thinking it would be a fun, kickass war movie, like the first like 20 minutes or so, playing music, surfing, i love the smell of napalm in the morning, etc.
ended up being a slow descent into madness.

I wouldn't say that I expected Man on Fire to be lighthearted, but I wasn't expecting it to be as bleak and sad as it wound up being. So damn good and underrated.

Certainly Caught me off guard.
