iOS 11 is 64-bit only - 32-bit apps no longer work (i.e. some games)

Ahead of the launch of iOS 11, there were several signs suggesting 32-bit apps would no longer be supported in the new operating system, which has been confirmed with the release of the first iOS 11 beta.

When attempting to open a 32-bit app when running iOS 11, the app refuses to launch, offering up a message that says the app needs to be updated to work with iOS 11.

32-bit apps are also not available when searching in the new version of the App Store, and previously downloaded 32-bit apps can't be installed through the Purchased tab.

Over the course of the last several months, warnings about 32-bit apps have gotten increasingly dire. With the launch of iOS 10.1 in October of 2016, Apple started warning customers that older apps "may slow down your iPhone."

In January of 2017, the first iOS 10.3 beta featured an even more serious message when launching a 32-bit app, which specifically read "This app will not work with future versions of iOS."

Given the warnings, it should come as no surprise that Apple has eliminated support for 32-bit apps, but it does render many older apps that have worked for years without updates unusable. There are likely many users who continue to use 32-bit apps regularly who will be surprised to find that those apps no longer work when iOS 11 rolls out to the public.

Just like the last time we had this thread, developers knew this has been coming since 2013.

That's four years warning. It's on the developer to update, that's been supported more than long enough.

Apple has had documentation on how to update apps for 64 bit, for again, nearly four years.

Edit: (Tunesmith) Could also add that 64-bit app updates have been mandatory since February 1st, 2015. Any 32-bit app still on the store has not been updated since at least that time.

It's the right call by Apple.

There's a list of games in another thread that haven't been updated yet. Two big ones I remember are FFTactics and Garou.

This has been known for a long, long time. There are lists online you can find that show all of the games that won't work on OS 11 unless they are updated. A lot of Sega's games are DOA unless they bother to update (and they probably won't).

Will the apps that don't get updated after a certain amount of time get automatically removed? Because in a years time there will be a lot of useless trash (well i guess even more so than now) on store.

You can't even find them on the app store on iOS 11.

Probably not because not every iOS device will be running iOS 11 for a while.

I don't have an iDevice, but does the apple appstore show apps that are incompatible with your device? Android doesn't.

Brilliant! Clean swipe of a lot of abandoned apps. Not that this affects me any different, in any way what so ever, I just like knowing that they're gone. Anything to help unknowing consumers out, even if its minimal.

From the article and OP:

I guess this forces new devs to use 64bit apps, but I really don't see the disadvantage to Apple in having the 32 libraries around for legacy apps. Just make sure that new apps don't get cert if they use them. Very anti-consumer, but that's essentially Apple's second name at this point.

How they are handling older devices with this update? I haven't followed the news. My dad has an old ipad4 he uses, so I understand it doesn't get the OS update but what about the app support? Now that everything is enforced to be 64bit, what happens here.

Planned obsolescence now on an app level.

Planned obsolescence? You know developers can just update them right?

Presumably they will only be able to use older versions of those apps, unless the developer decides to provide updated 32-Bit updates too, but they don't have to.

What I was asking is if they'll get removed after a certain time? It's a different question?

If he's still on a 32bit OS he can still install and run 32bit apps. It doesn't affect him.

So people still on a 32bit OS couldn't use them? How is that fair?

Same. At first I thought it was the future. Games bought on the app store, playable on phone, TVs, tablets etc.

But Apple don't care about gaming, to them gaming is a 'feature'

Yea that's why they have an entire games editorial team to run the games section of the app store.

This reminds me of when there was no more Rosetta to enable PowerPC apps on OS X when Lion came out. That ruffled a lot of feathers.

We can blame the developers sure, but it still fucking sucks, that I've wasted so much money on stuff I won't get to play unless I stay away from iOS 11. And I will stay away from iOS 11, but the thing is, Apple will keep pestering me with pop ups reminding me to update my OS.

If Apple would just stop annoying me with that shit.

Excellent news, now any poorly supported apps will be banished from the App Store. Its not like the devs didn't have YEARS to update them, sadly some devs want to continue to make profit for a one time poorly supported effort.

I've seen some apps still sporting the old skeuomorphism graphic style that went out with iOS6!

Apps on my phone that will no longer work:

FFtactics, shining Force, Phantasy Star II, Shin Megami tensei, Puzzlejuice, Dungeon Raid, Connectrode, the original mega Man 2 (I.e the not terrible one), elder signs, space invaders infinity gene, groove coaster, and crystal defenders.

And that's just what's on my phone, let alone the games from way back. Lost to the ether. Of these, I expect Square ENIX to maybe update a couple, Sega to do nothing, Atlas to do nothing and the indies are anyone's guess (mine is not likely

Which is a shame, dungeon raid especially was incredible. Think puzzle and dragon without the gatcha, done at least a year before P&D came out. Puzzlejuice blending Tetris and crosswords, the classic Sega games (sure sonic gets updates but where is my shining force?!)

Thanks mobile gaming...

This is irrelevant

It's on Apple to ensure legacy support. People shit on Microsoft whenever some legacy, not supported app breaks, Apple shouldn't get a free pass on this.

This is forced obsolescence plain and simple (especially since most devs changed their initial applications from beeing a one time purchase to a subscription model because it's far more profitable, they have absolutely no reasons to update their old, perfectly working applications)

I don't give a crap about warning to devs that might not even exist anymore, I give a crap about myself as a consumer, and because of this I'm going to lose all my SNK and dotemu games, and it's maybe 70-80% of my game library.

How in the holy fuck can it be the right call by Apple? They're screwing me over and it's the right call? Wtf seriously.

What are those reasons?

Storage. Performance. Security. Application interoperability and system compatibility. Development resources.

And rumor has it that Apple's forthcoming processors (either this year or next) will remove all the 32-bit backwards compatibility circuitry anyway.

If you really want to hold onto your 4+ year old games, stick with your old hardware and your old OS.

Lol @ people trying to make it seem like Apple are doing a bad thing
