Will we be seeing HDR on every new game?

Since now PS and Xbox will have 2 consoles supporting HDR will we be seeing most AAA having HDR.

What about indie titles?

Im curious as to how much effort is needed to have HDR in a game. Id love for every game to support it more then 4k etc. HDR is more of a game changer then 4k

Destiny 2 disappointingly does not have it in the current Beta and neither will it have it at launch apparently. Seems like an exception for larger PS4 games this year.

I think HDR is just gonna be one of those things that doesn't really take off. Some games have implemented and I'm sure more will but I don't see every game using it in the future. It would be cool if it did happen though. I personally don't care for it.

Its nice. I hope it does become a standard. Not sure how much extra work it is for the developer and how many people can actually use it, that will probably drive how much its used.

It absolutely will take off, HDR is the biggest thing since color for television and display technology. It's not some gimmick or an arbitrary increase in resolution. It allows more shades of color to be displayed and being able to have the brightest whites and the darkest blacks together in one scene. In short; it brings display technology closer to reality. Anyone thinking HDR won't take off just really doesn't understand what it is and what a break through it is.

But with every new tech, adoption rate is slow. People rocked black & white televisions for quite a while before switching too.

Destiny 2 doesnt have it and Battlefield 1 still doesnt either. I really dont know how much extra work it requires but the results vary from game to game. I still cant tell the difference in resogun and ratchet and uncharted.

Uncharted 4 DLC should have it. It will be interesting to see if they have improved the technology since last fall.

Ass Creed Syndicate had Pro support added but no HDR support. I havent heard about HDR support for AC Origins. Which leaves Battlefront and Mordor as the other big AAA games and I havent heard about HDR support for either game.

Gran Turismo has HDR support and their youtube channel has some incredible looking HDR trailers.

Wait what Destiny 2 wont support HDR???

Damn...

It needs to be a standard. It enhances the experience more then anything

UE4 already supports HDR out of the box, Unity will as well if it doesn’t already. It will be a standard feature across AAA and indie soon enough.

Destiny 2 seems like it's going to come screaming off the production line anyway so I don't think it is a big indicator of future support in other games.

HDR is a fucking scam and a travesty of a feature. And this is from the dumb ass who bought a 2000 euro HDR compatible TV last years cause I got scammed like an idiot.

And the implementation in some of the games is absolutely atrocious e.g. Infamous Second Son. Unplayable in this mode and whoever says otherwise can.......

It's like all the madness with 3d gaming on consoles some years back, they needed to push the sales. Who the fuck wants a 3d TV nowadays? Tell me! HDR will be forgotten in 12 months or so.

And don't even get me started about the movies supporting it....

The only impressive things are those Samsung, Sony, LG demos - created to full idiots like myself.

PS: best looking HDR game? Nex Machina and it's not even a contest with the others..

It requires little to no extra effort to implement, it's just implementing another color space for programmers.
For displays, it offers all advantages and no disadvantages and will be adopted across the board because it's awesome.

Pretty much this. I owe a Samsung KS9000 and it doesn't do HDR all that great relative to the Sony ZD9, LG OLEDS/Samsung QLEDS of the world but it was pretty mind blowing when I first fired up Ratchet and Clank and played it in 4K/HDR. I personally think 4K res is very noticeable, but do think HDR is the bigger deal. Watching the Grand Tour on Amazon or the offerings of the HDR Channel on YouTube is revealing. Watching non HDR content is bland now.

The same goes for games. I think some games do HDR better than others. HZD for example is Sony's flagship title imo showcasing 4K/HDR on a competent HDR set. The problem I think is that HDR hasn't been clearly defined yet. There really is no standard since it's still in it's nascent stages. HDR10/HDR10+ v Dolby Vision. Some 4K tvs that offer HDR may not even have a 10bit panel to begin with so it isn't "true HDR", barely meeting the qualifications set by UHD Alliance which is this grouping/committee of TV manufacturerd which set standards for 4K and HDR (someone correct me if I'm wrong plz)

So it's all very early now. But some tvs this year will blow folks away. I've seen the x930e displaying 4K/HDR content and it looks so much better than my KS9000 which I think wasn't too shabby to begin with.

I think wr just need more HDR titles. My ks8000 blows me away in HDR. If done well its so good

Ori looked sick as hell

Just HdR? I want Dolby Vision in my games, now that it's software based and is a terrific improvement from normal HDR10 as shown in Mass Effect Andromeda.

A couple of years, we'll get there.

There seemed to be a good number of games supporting HDR at E3 this year. A huge improvement over last year's show where only a few major titles supported the technology.

Odd, I thought Resogun was one of the best showcases for HDR.

Nex Machina is where it's at. Oddly, same company :)

The biggest challenge for the HDR market is making some sort of standard that will easily look good for everyone. I have seen my fair share of fucked up colors and weird artefacts on other people's HDR tv's. And not just on cheaper screens. When it works or is properly adjusted, it is absolutely fantastic though.

People tend to focus so much on resolution and input lag, but different screens with different quality of colours can make a massive difference in perception.

We have threads for enhanced games on the Pro and X but do we have a thread tracking HDR support in games? I couldn't find anything in a search.

I'm not sure this is really the case. HDR displays started showing up before we had consoles or games that supported them.

Adding HDR shouldn't be too hard, relatively speaking. Not sure if it's true but from what I've read in interviews, games typically already include the light and color ranges for HDR but developers limit these ranges through tone mapping for SDR displays. So I can see it becoming standard.

HDR is the most noticeable PS4 Pro enhancement for me personally. I absolutely love it and hope it becomes the standard.

I was super disappointed that the Destiny 2 beta didn't make use of it. Sci fi games in particular can really stand out with HDR.

Ehhh it's just becoming defacto albiet with shakey implementations down the price line just like 4K.

We're getting to a point where if you need a new TV everything is just gonna be 4K. HDR is slowly following in tow trickling on down the line.

always chasing the next thrill
Only when a HDR industry standard is made.

The sheer clusterfuck confusion HDR makes on every neogaf thread is pretty much proof of that.

Makes sense.

Makes sense.

For would be buyers it's a minefield out there right now and it truly pays off to do research and homework. Plenty of articles out by the likes of CNET (from Geoffrey Morrison in particular) that educate folks on both 4K/HDR.

Also it's good to set expectations for the tv you want, the performance you want and the price you're willing to pay.

I fucking hope so. Neither Mictosoft nor Sony mandate it, but they fucking should.
Not every game stores its internal light values in such a high range so it's a redundant feature for those games.

edit: 10bit+ colour could improve any game with smooth colour shading/gradation however.

At some point, sure, there is no reason why all games can't be HDR in the same way as they've become 4->8, 8->16, 16->32 bits of color earlier. It's impossible to find a game which is rendering to a 16 bits frame buffer these days, same will eventually happen with 40, 48 and 64 bits (which are what HDR10/12/16 actually are).

But if I would have to guess than I'd say that this won't happen very soon. We're probably looking at several years still before all games will start using HDR10/12.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?

HDR has already taken off and while you don't like it, I think its a bigger game changer than 4K. HDR on a good TV set is incredible looking.

Did you do any research on HDR beforehand because there is a ton of info on what are faux HDR TV's and the real deals. None of this info is hidden or hard to find.

Did a ton of research, and my panel is 10 bit. The model is Samsung KS8000, one of the best reviewed last year.

LOL @ folks equating HDR to a gimmick like 3d.

HDR is actually the next natural step up in display technology. It's a way of doing colors & bright/dark contrast. As time goes on, more and more sets will have it, and at some point in the future, it won't even be a marketed feature, it'll be a standard in all TVs (and will take a bit longer to become a standard in games).

FFXV at evening w/ lights, Forza Horizon 3 have been my standout HDR titles so far that I've played. I played around a bit with it in the GT Sport beta after unlocking a Ferarri, and man that car looks orange to me now in SDR when compared to HDR that is capable of showing off the Ferrari Red.

inFAMOUS has the worst implementation of it by far.

Considering we currently have three consoles that support HDR, and a handful of titles still don't support it, I don't think a fourth console will have any meaningful impact.

For me, the best showcase for HDR was the Scotland level in Uncharted 4. It starts out with you facing a huge skyline that can sometimes get bright as fuck. Each time I point the camera to it, I'm simply amazed. Plus the intro level during the Boat fights in the thunderstorms. Each flash of thunder blinds the fuck out of me. It was amazing when I first saw it and I am still impressed by it to this day. I played this on a Sony 75" 940c and a 65" Z9D.
