Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age |OT| You Had One Job!

I've arrived on the Phon Coast and the game has definitely turned into a slog just as I remember it.

Strong beginning, poor middle part that is just 90% empty fields with a cutscenes thrown in every now and then.

I always try to love 12 but it doesn't do enough to hold my attention.

I actually enjoy that the game doesn't layer on thick plot at all times. Lets me appreciate the atmosphere more and take time to smell the roses without feeling prodded along.

I love pretty much the entire stretch from rainy Giza on through Archades.

I was loving the game until the Tomb of Raithwall and the Leviathan, but it loses too much steam after that. I was going to put it into my Top 5 favorite FF titles, but I just don't know now. The fetch questing from one point to another without any story development outside Fran's past hurt the game a lot. And when you finally get to Archades, you spent too less time in it and there are no actual consequences on going there.

You're kidding, right? Some of the most consequential moments in the story happen during the Bur-Omisace episode.

I agree that Archades is a little disappointing, though. I think they could have remedied this with another dungeon in addition to Draklor.

I don't like that rage mode gimmick. Bosses get super armor and combo the fuck out of you when they're near death. So the first 90% of the healthbar is easygoing and the final 10% can take ages.

Where do you get the Iga and Koga blade in this game, seems like its not the same location as OG FFXII, chest gave me a mega elixer...

That's right, but one of my main problems is how the story doesn't really advance a lot until you reach the final destination in a series of dungeons. It's less noticeable in the lead up to the Bur-Omisace visit, since you get more Larsa scenes meanwhile and stuff, but when the game repeats the same thing three times (big travel within one point of the map to another far away one) with the Tomb of Raithwall, Bur-Omisace and Archades, and the last one is completely devoid of any meaningful story presentation other than specific scenes with Balthier that lead up to an underwhelming "arc" climax in the city, it becomes annoying.

I like it a lot! Often you're forced to readjust your strategy as this happens (and you can often Quickening/Summon or, later, boosted-Ardor your way through that final stage of their health bar before the defense even kicks in).

Also, it's really just bosses having access to all the same near-death stat buffs your party can also access (the combo rate also works like this by default). IIRC some normal enemies have that stuff too.

ALTHOUGH I think some bosses have a two-tiered version of it (like one buff at 10%HP remaining, a greater one at 5%) but I could be wrong. Most enemies in the game have fairly straightforward abilities/gambits just like your party does.

Iga blade and Koga blade are both in the extended section of Lhusu mines that you access by taking on the Antlion hunt.

The stage 100 trial was ridiculous. Zodiark spamming worked out pretty fine until the last three left started throwing elixirs at each other. That single meteorite I had in my inventory sure came in handy.

Right I bought it.

I SuCK hard at rpg systems....any advice on how not to fuck up my party?

It's not a particularly tough game, so just do whatever sounds fun. If you want specific ideas (which is understandable, as the job system is a bit intimidating), just pick from the suggestions in the OP. There's no real reason to min-max here. Make sure you have someone who can heal (be it white or red mage - they get access to healing spells quickly) and you're fine.

I'm confused about how people were posting crazy high Gil amounts for completing Trial Mode 1-10. I beat Belias and got jack shit for it. 1000 gil. What gives? :\

The only farming trick I know is selling the Diamond Armlet for 6000 gil over and over again. And using the first 8 trials to farm LP.

Oh god, I left my party somewhere in the great crystal yesterday when I fell asleep. Now I gotta figure out what the hell i was doing in my post surgery recovery haze. The minimap is completely worthless, and it's an annoying slog with few landmarks.

Ok just started.
It's incredible how the scene when Reks is killed is badly acted.
The start of the game is always the hardest for me, have to go through such a slog to start with and the Zodiac job system doesn't agree with me at all.
I may the only guy who actually liked that part of OG XII.
The remastered audio is glorious! I know the OST by art and didn't know at all about that.
Best surprise feature for me so far!

You need the cat-ear hood accessory, which converts LP earned into gil. It's CharacterLevel * 5 gil per 1 LP, and this stacks with the number of people in your group who have it equipped. You can buy it from the clan shop in the muthru bazaar at Rabanastre once your clan rank is high enough.

When is it a good moment to wonder around, level up, get summons, get good gear, etc.. ?

I'm when
Larsa joins as guest for second time in Jahara village

Okay. Is there anything that needs to happen before the chest is allowed to spawn on the airship? I'm losing my mind. Cure method doesn't work for me (yes I'm doing every step, noted here http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=244075731&postcount=4655), 3 straight hours last night of running in and out, and then about 10 attempts at the 7 zone method (so 70 more tries). No chest spawn at all.

The only thing I can think of is:

I'm looking at the wrong spot, but I don't think so.
There is some prerequisite before the chest will spawn, but I also don't think so.
My game is bugged, which I don't think so as well.

Idk what to do.

Finally had few hours to sit down and start it. Even after all these years it's incredible how the writing in this specific game is better than most RPGs and jRPGs I played in the last decade. If only FF would go back to this style of storytelling and quality of writing...
Plus every single cutscene counts, every single conversation is tense (remembering me of GoT), never wasted words. So good.

Out of everything I played only Tactics Ogre Let' Us Fight Together even comes close.
It's really impressive work and should really be the standard all games strive for.

I really don't like the license boards, they go so hard against the design philosophy of the rest of the game. When Final fantasy XII came out, it's explorable world and seamless battles were a stark contrast to Final Fantasy X, and the License board, where you can go in any direction at any time, really helped amplify the freedom. In the ten hour introductory sequence, you re constantly getting access to all this new cool stuff but you can't use much of it since you only have a few characters at each moment and an extremely limited license board. I read a Hiroyuki Ito interview where he compared IZJS to a hotel annex - an alternate experience that exists next to the main offering, for people looking for something different. It's disappointing to me that this is now the main customization system for the remake. I wish they could bring it back in a patch but from whats been posted here, the game is too balanced according to the zodiac job system for it to work.

Finally got the bow. If anyone has trouble with their RNG on the cure trick, I had to change my settings to fast, active, and last position. Once I did that I started on a completely different section of the RNG list and the correct 97, 94, 95 chain was only about 12 casts away.

Vaan's entire existence in this game is justified by the hilarious and awkward scene where he asks Fran her age in Eruyt Village and the party all treat him with disgust. That scene is just perfect

I'm looking for the wither technicks, from what I can see it should be at Pharos, Abyssal North but I'm up to the third ascent now and I don't have that zone on my map anywhere. Can anybody help ?

Nice! You certainly deserve it.

Abyssal North is in the Pharos Subterra, the below-ground levels you can only access after you finish the tower.

Damn, Trial Mode is fucking sweaty from the 70th level onwards. On 91 at the moment.

Don't think you can sit back and Seitengrat your way to victory. Enemies and bosses become real dodgy bastards so you'll end up relying far more on magick than outright attacking which shakes things up (quite welcome I must say). Reverse on your own team will also be a godsend in these latter stages.

It's not a fuzzy area, you'll see when you get there. I had to go back and find the old ps2 schematic maps to look at on my tablet before I went crazy.

Ahh well at least I had a chance to RNG my way into 3 Gendarmes. Too bad I'm mostly using 2handers ATM.

I wonder if the Cure RNG manipulation would work on say the treasures in Cerobi Steppe? I don't want to break the game by getting the Seitengrat, but I'm perfectly okay with saving farming time on getting say an extra Grand Armour/Helm. I have no idea how I'd begin though

Vayne's address at Rabanastre is so amazing.A truly grey and interesting set up for a villain.

Its gonna be a joy to experience thus game's writing again.Such a shame that FF has regressed consistently since then.

Ardyn and Caius are basic anime drivel by comparison...What a shame.

Vayne is sophisticatedly written. Caius and Ardyn are pretentious

Golmore jungle reminds me of classic Final Fantasy. They throw some enemies that hit like trucks leading to one direction, so naturally you are forced to go the other way. I kind of wandered through there before I was supposed to go and those mobs were a pain even though I was autocasting protect and cura like mad.
That's of my favorite parts of XII.

Things like a few scattered strong mobs like werewolves in Giza or those Archaeoaevis in Zertinan Caverns; the regular appearance of areas that you can either access and the mobs are suddenly much stronger (Zertinan Caverns two different times, Feywood or the short back entrance of Henne Mines); or, just the ability to see areas you won't be able to access until later, like when you're nearly out of Barheim Passage and you can see the bridge span far across the underground lake to the second section you access later.

The segmented world is one area where this sort of design sort of helps because, like you said, it funnels you in different directions. It's not just an open world where begin to see high level mobs. The way it creates sort of pockets or doses of 'danger' is actually helped by the segmented and linearity of its 'open' (by FF/PS2 standards) world.

I thought so.., Larsa is a really good healer.
more than that, he has Bubble. as far as I know you can't get the magic yourself until later.
you can have a party with each member having 5k+ HP with him constantly casting Bubble. his MP bar is gonna drop rather quickly though

I managed to finish Zertinan Caverns thanks to that. (to be fair, during the boss fight you just equip Diamond Armlets and you just can't die after you deal with the minions being summoned, still an annoying long fight though since I had no damage)

was anyone surprised at the random level 90 mobs in the Caverns? Every other mob is around 30 or 40 and then *surprise*, 4k melee damage from random level 90 dragons having some fun in the middle of the area.

doing optional content and hunts is probably the only challenge I have now since I'm very much overlevelled for the story.

Yeah by the time I was in Henne Mines I was somewhat overleveled at 30 (think there is supposed to be about 22-24... Lv30 is intended level exactly after Shrine of Miriam). But at Lv30 my Basch BSH/MNK already had 7500 HP with Larsa's Bubble haha.
