A quick aside, Cersei blew away a fucking church with basically the entire town being devout to it right? Did everyone just forget and assume everyone is placated or something? Surprised the town itself isn't just in outright rebellion.

On the one hand, some people think the Northern House would revolt if Jon bent the knee.

On the other hand, Cercei blew up the church and the most popular queen in Westeros and no one cared. Not even her brother/lover (and father of the suicide king).

She needs allies in Westeros. Tyrion told her right there that he would be a valuable ally.

She's in a tough spot. Jon as an ally alone means nothing. She needs to prove to the North that she is an ally worth having and possibly a queen to have. Maybe Jon tells her she doesn't need to convince him, but the North.

The problem is I don't see Jon bringing his armies down while the Night King is still the bigger threat.

Definitely not. Jon wouldn't help Dany is her quest to win the Iron Throne even if he did take his army south. The Northern houses are decimated and there aren't many Wildings left. If she wanted a strong ally, she should be courting Littlefinger, not Jon.

Technically that would be a ballista, not a crossbow.

Anyway I think they just stole this idea from the Hobbit movies.

Dorne definitely had an environmental advantage- it was full of more open spaces and long sightlines. They knew when attacks were coming and from what direction.

None of this does anything to explain why, if dragons can simply be taken down by ballistas, dragons ever played a pivotal role in conquering the seven kingdoms. It's either feasible to shoot them down or it isn't. If it is, then we're basically being told (in the show world) that nobody's ever thought to try until now, which seems ludicrous to me.

Well, in the book history at least. Dorne just got REALLY lucky while the dragon was fucking their shit up. It seemed like a 1000-1 shot that killed the dragon and Rhaenys Targaryen, who was the sister-wife that Aegon actually loved. The only reason that the whole army didn't come back to burn the damned country to the ground was that they were scared of losing another dragon, and at least by rumor, Dorne had Rhaenys dying a slow and painful death, and if Aegon let them be, they would put her out of her misery.

Thinking more about it, what on Earth are Dany's forces thinking?

They make this big entrance and landing on Westeros that everyone seems to know about. The Martell and Tyrell leaders are there. They make their plans. But wait.... Yara's got to sail all the way around the enemy-controlled waters to pick up the Dornish army and schlep them back to King's Landing. They deserve the beating they got. I don't think the Unsullied or Dothraki will hold up very well in Westeros, either.

Millitary strategy is not in the actual skill set of D&D. None of the battle plans have really made much sense since at least the battle for the Wall.

It doesn't matter, Jon will piss off the Northern Lords, then little lady Mormont will stab him to death and become the new Queen in the north. That's how it works right?

I believe their new acting direction to Euron's actor this season as part of his soft reboot was simply "eat all the scenery". A shame they didn't just do that from the start.
Also had to laugh when it was clear the showrunners know that only one of the Sand Snakes is actually remembered by the audience (for her "bad poosy" line and that one jail scene) so they just unceremoniously offed the other two in passing. Not that I expect her to survive her capture, but she gets the spotlight at least while the other two are quickly disposed of in one scene that wasn't even focused on them, but Theon instead.

That's a good bit of history and makes perfect sense. It should be a 1000-1 shot.

It's also a shame they didn't set the naval battle up at all. They missed a chance to build Euron up as a truly formidable foe by not doing this. Naval battles are so strategy-heavy. Commanders really had to know what they were doing to be successful. It would have been really cool to depict Euron discovering that Yara and Theon were headed that way, then setting and executing a trap for them. Instead, it's just all shock value: BOOM- HERE HE IS!!! FIRE AND SMOKE!!! WE TOLD YOU HE WAS A BAD-ASS!!!

Yuck.

Nah, but it feels like the logical conclusion to his storyline on the show anyhow.

I would be dissapointed to see him being succesful, with him now hanging around people who so deeply mistrust him. He's got Sansa, Brienne, Jon, Ser Davos and possibly even Arya against him. It would be to cheap to just let him win again.

He's shouldn't be able to turn Sansa again, and I think she will rather effect the plot by not standing down from power to Jon again.

That's a good bit of history and makes perfect sense. It should be a 1000-1 shot.

It's extremely difficult to kill dragons with conventional weapons. In fact I think the only time it has happened that we know of is when a giant angry mob stormed the dragon pits in Kings landing, and the dragons were chained to the ground, and surrounded. A lot of people died too.

RIght- but this and the Dorne example are from GRRM's expanded history.

We had it made clear to us last night that, in the show, all that's required is a ballista.

Few things I wonder for next weeks episode.

I wonder if Danny will legitimize him.
I wonder if Melisandre knows about Jon.
I wonder how long they'll play out Danny and Jon not knowing their relation to each other.

Where the hell is Bran? Everyone else has been able to move all over the place in this episode. He should have long made it to Winterfell.

only thing better than incest is surprise incest.

Can we get a GIF of Theon Noping off the boat with some clever text (nope, nope nope). Anyone clever enough to pull this off?

I do have to wonder why they completely cut the Doran Martell book plot in favor of Ellaria. Considering that she will probably die next episode anyway, I feel like her contribution to the show since killing Doran has been nothing.

Will we get to see SHAME priestess next week as Cersei swaps her with Ellaria?

I feel like I would rather have had some time to catch up with Bran than that sex scene, but whatever.

Yeah, no Bran, no Hound, no Tormund, no Night's King, etc. Kind of worrying in context of the shortened season that they decided to forego all of those in exchange for an extended sex scene, a seemingly unnecessary Nymeria scene, and a drawn out ship battle that they couldn't even be bothered to narratively stage.

That's all probably gonna be covered when they probably meet.

Jon being there with Davos will help. Also, Tyrion briefly spoke to Dany's own elder maester Aemon and LC Jeor Mormont about the threat beyond the wall. He'll vouch for Jon.

It's scenes like those that make it hard to take people seriously who claim "There's not enough time!" or "Those cuts book plots end up being pointless!"

Seems like a relative no-brainer to me to have Arya meet back up with the Hound and the Brotherhood - Maisie Williams is great but she's by far the best when she has other characters to play off of in dialogue (see: seasons 2, 3, and 4), and if I recall correctly the Brotherhood hasn't really announced where it's going.

Will Davos understand that Tyrion's Wildfire plan is the reason his son is dead.
Maybe he'll remember that he actually had a wife and kids, though I'm not sure they got into them on the show beyond the 1 grown son

The reason his son is dead is because he followed a fool into battle.

How much you want to bet given how op Lannisters are they will bring down the biggest dragon (drogon) with one magical ballista headshot. I can almost 100% guarantee Drogon will die in the battle between Lannister and Dany. Possibly the battle where they will fight for high garden. Dothraki vs Sam's family.

rule of cool says drogon will either survive or be the last dragon to die.

That's not clear at all.

It is if you've been paying attention to the way this show has handled things for the last several seasons. Qyburn's "unveiling" of the ballista last night was our clever little foreshadow. Dollars to donuts the next time you see one in the show it will be shooting down a dragon.

I think Jon snow will die in a heroic death during the final battle vs whitewalker. Or given how op the Lannisters are they may take out Dany and Jon in the season finale. Because Cersei is the main villain not whitewalker. Series ends with Cersei losing to WW and dooming mankind by killing Jon and Dany.

I find it shameful that since they've ran out of material, they've entirely stopped giving Tyrion anything meaningful to say or do. D&D clearly aren't clever enough to write him.

Yeah. It feels like once they got past the book material Tyrion became a background character.

That's a disastrous ending, and the ending is gonna be bittersweet.

what? Tyrion has said important things about Casterly Rock and Jon Snow. I am very much looking forward to a reunion with the latter next Sunday.

I'm impressed the showrunners recognized that Varys tried to kill Dany and then Littlefinger and Jon have never spoken. I totally expected them to ignore the histories.
