Wkd BO 07•21-23•17 - Slam Dunk' for Nolan, Apes escape, not rough Girl's Trip, Luc

Have we had examples of the inverse of that happening?

Like was Speed Racer despised when it came out, but now is considered a cinematic masterpiece?

$209.184 million! Get it right!

I don't understand how this film was greenlit with that budget. I just don't understand it. Besson is cool and all, Fifth Element is one of the greatest, but his track record is not good and nowhere in any film he has ever made has that kind of money been easy to make back. Lucy somehow made a lot, but come on man.

Like what in the right fuck were people thinking? I had some hope, but it looked like a complete mess and Besson is looking more like a hack that wandered into a few great films than a true auteur.

People hated Avatar when it was released because they claimed it was a rip-off. Now it is a cinematic masterpiece that kickstarted its own movie universe.

Frozen's reception on GAF was quite positive at release. Then everyone else liked the film.

This phenomena is a particularly communicable one.

It seems like any film, if exposed long enough, contracts it
I remember saying that about films in general. That people in here will love something, but once it gets too popular people will lash out against it.
And then that comment pissed off Amirox.

I wasn't here when Speed Racer dropped but I get the sense that the film's cheering section (of which I'm kinda/sorta a member) was a somewhat late thing.

the people who stick up for John Carter and The Lone Ranger are a different tribe altogether, though

There's also the Camerontologists who assemble if the letters A, V, and T & R appear in a sentence in a semi-recognizable order

(and then there's Bronson and TRON: Legacy, which is like Ralph Wiggum and his bent Wookiee)

Most men aspire to be me.

The rest resent me.

I disliked Thor 1 and Dark World to the point of haven't even watch any Ragnarok trailers.

Have no interest in watching it, but I noticed the thumbnail has the Hulk. Now I want to watch the film. Still not gonna watch the trailers. Keep me surprise if I do end up seeing it.

Every time somebody corrects the use of Thor 2 or Thor 3, the fifth dimensional beings who'll deliver us to the next stage of evolution decide to wait another thousand or so years.

Hi would you like to invest in the newest sci-fi action franchise from the people who brought you the very successful action franchise Taken? It is being helmed by the guy who did Lucy, you know that sci-fi action film that did $460 million on a $40 million budget, whose previous French sci-fi action film is one of the highest grossing French films of all time?

It's really not an obvious bomb on paper.

But that script. Come on man someone had to have some common sense in this deal. Lucy was 40m lol. This film was 200m. You never go 200m unless you are damn sure of what you are doing.

The Speed Racer, John Carter, Lone Ranger, and Cameron/Avatar areas of the movie-GAF venn diagram have a decent amount of overlap.

I have come to deliver you into the promise land. But you constantly fight me at every turn.

Now I know how Moses felt.

I hope Valerian will do well in France at least. There are eight reviews up on Allociné and they are all positive.
I remmeber The Intouchables was pretty big in France and I looked and that made 166 million there as per Mojo.

I doubt Valerian can hit 100 million there.

Titanic was the best selling movie in France though if we go by Wikipedia information.

I've watched the trailers but the fact that Thor 1 and Thor 2: The Dark World exist at all basically prevent me from actually being excited for 3. Like, I'm really supposed to be excited for a Chris Hemsworth movie? Can't do it, fam.

Lone Ranger is one of those movies that is too long, but hot diggity dog that finale is superb.
That I can agree with.

Hemsworth is a funny, dude. Get hyped.

Lone Ranger is misguided, unsatisfying, and sloppy.
John Carter is...also misguided. And inert, for the most part. Not great looking, either.
TRON: Legacy is absolutely inert. But really pretty. And it sounds great.
Avatar is a decent adventure flick uplifted by ALSO being something like a Jackson Pollock created by splattering every last one of Cameron's goofy fetishes all over the screen.
Speed Racer is way too long for what it is but when it wants to be a live action anime it delivers at being a silly-yet-still-serious-yet-candy-coated live-action anime.

Hemsworth is easily the 2nd worst in MCU after Renner. I only enjoyed him in The Cabin in the Woods because he had an
awesome death

Hemsworth is alright, I mean, outside of being box office poison. He's been saddled with bad Thor movies and lesser roles in the Avengers movies. But he's been good in the promos for Thor Ragnarok and Infinity War.

Hemsworth needs to do more comedies.

Then he'll get the respect he "deserves".

Watch Vacation or Ghostbusters before you say things you can't take back. Or don't. Actually, yeah, don't. Definitely not Vacation, at least. Like, stay away. Stay far away.

Yeah and they also have Episode IX and Avengers 4 slated for May '19. Move Episode IX to December and now they're releasing next to Frozen 2. If the goal is to avoid other Disney movies, I'm not sure what option they have.

They don't need to avoid ALL the other Disney movies just the ones that will have a huge demographic overlap.

Putting it along side Avengers or Guardians 2 like they almost did with the Last Jedi is dumb because suddenly a bunch of people that would have gone to see both might have to only chose one or the other.

That won't happen nearly as much if it's released alongside a cartoon, especially one primarily aimed at little girls. Heck having them both out at the same time might even help since they are essentially offering their own counter programming.

So Master and Commander is actually a good movie? I got it for a gift one year randomly and was like. It's Russell Crowe this is like bargain crap. I said thanks, but I was like ehh.

It's like AC4 Black Flag movie you didn't know you wanted. Amazing movie.

The worst in the MCU is Aaron Taylor-Johnson (but his character is dead now) followed by Evangeline Lilly in Ant-Man.

If we're counting tv MCU, the person who plays Foggy in Daredevil is a pretty terrible actor. I'd say he's the worst.

That Iron Fist dude is the most insufferable.

By the end of it's third week, Guardians 2 had already made more than 75% of what its domestic total is going to end up being. Even Wonder Woman as one of the leggiest superhero movies ever is going to end up at a bit under 75% from its first three weekends if it ends up a little over $400 million. And I think I remember Kswis posting something that said the majority of comic book movies are the same (in that there looking at somewhere between 2/3 and 4/5 of their total domestic take comes in the first 3 weeks). 3 weeks away might hurt the legs, but it'd probably be the difference between making 500 and 530 million or something like that.

I hope Dark Tower doesn't hurt Idris' leading man potential going forward. He hasn't been getting a lot of visible face time recently. Even with Ragnarok, you can tell he's in it for like 30 seconds.

I was going to mention this too. Ultron, Iron Man 3 and Civil War all made 80-85% of their money in the first 17 days and these movies are going to get more frontloaded, not less. I don't see a problem with a Star Wars movie coming a month after big MCU stuff.

Yup. A month is an eternity with modern box office.

Edward Kenway is a goddamn Ezio expy.

Thank God for Evie.
I still haven't played Syndicate.

I have hopes for Origins, though. Probably because it's been a few years since I've played an AC game and I can actually feel excited for it.

Speaking of Hemsworth is and poor box office performance, what's up with the next Star Trek movie?
I don't think even Paramount knows at the moment. There's been mum on that front for quite awhile now.

Idris is 45. I don't know if he's going to get much more popular than he is now.
