Why exactly is the Harry Potter epilogue so despised?

I mean I know the obvious answer (shipping) but it's been a while since I read it but I guess from my own opinion. The story really ends at the previous chapter. This just feels unnecessary. Also it does take away imagination from the reader which is why epilogues are hard to do. And... it lead to the Cursed Child. ...the less we say about that the better

Because like much of the last few Harry Potters books, it's appallingly written, not to mention utterly unnecessary.

Also, the kids have fucking ridiculous names.

I was unaware people hated it in the book, but i do understand that people didn't like how it was put in the movie.

Because it reads like some kind of fan fiction, with main characters being married to each other and having kids named after other characters from the book.

1. Its incredibly saccharine.

2. It does not at all mesh with the book that its in at all in terms of its tone and the way it was written. Its very apparent this was written by Rowling when she was just getting started.

3. Albus Severus Potter...its like fucking fan-fiction

It felt trite. After the dark overtones of the last three books, all the conflict, all the death, and the final battle for the survival of not just the wizarding world but the muggle world as well, we get a glorified "and they lived happily ever after" fairy tale ending.

Just ugh.

Reads like fanfiction basically.

Poorly written fanfiction.

From what I've seen, it's not really a shipping thing outside of some people who think Harry should've married Hermione. For most people who don't like it, it's some combination of: poor writing, a schmaltzy tone, the very bad names for the kids, and the fact that it's kind of random and doesn't provide closure for the series or leave on a note that implies future adventures.

I don't necessarily despise it, but I don't particularly care for these super idyllic fanfic endings where most characters are matched up with each other (mainly their school sweethearts), happily all marry and have kids at roughly the same time.

Plus, yeah...Albus Severus Potter. No, you moron. As much as you want to honour Snape for the sacrifices he ultimately made to the cause against Voldemort, he was still a man in a position of care and authority who bullied you and fellow kids incessantly, likely gave Neville some long-term psychological trauma and was just a fucking dick. If I were Ginny I'd pummel his arse for suggesting the Severus name.

No joke. Hagrid deserved the middle name more than Snape, given how instrumental Hagrid was in protecting, raising, and aiding Harry. But I guess Albus Hagrid Potter wouldn't have sounded as nifty...

It's not despised. The epilogue was great. First time i ever heard anything bad about it was here on this website.

I would have ended Harry Potter, with an old grumpy wizard, full of scars after a whole lifetime of dealing with evil magic users. Voldermort's scar? just the first of many.

Rowling has come out and said she made a mistake sticking to it like she did (specifically in regards to Hermione/Ron being a horribly mismatched pair personality wise)

Hagrid lived tho, Harry named his kids after dead people only.

In the movies, it was so dumb that they just didn't recast some older actors as them but instead tried to make these young kids look old:

Agreed. It should've been realistic in the depiction of the main characters. Obviously Hermoine is too hot and too good for Ron, so she wouldve left him a long time ago for a better man. Ron would've never recovered from her dumping him and should've been depicted as a gamergater wearing a make america great again hat.

Harry would've been too popular by then should've been shown literally swimming in pussy like DiCaprio in Wolf Of Wall street or DiCaprio in real life. No way he wouldve settled for plain weasley. she was so plain i cant even remember her name.

That would have also fixed the issue with the awful kids names. we all know no one names their kids after their heroes anyway.

if you have read this far and havent figured out this is sarcasm, i envy you.

Albus Severus Potter is the worst name ever written. Seriously, even if the kid wasn't named after any characters, including a psychopath who tormented his father because he was friendzoned by his grandma, he would still have the worst name ever. The context just makes it even worse.

Also it's just way, way too over the top happy. "Everyone got together and got married and had cute little wizard kids and everything was great" is a dramatic tonal shift from the test of the last book, which saw a huge number of characters put in direct peril or outright killed.

It's extraordinary fan-fictiony.

To the point where it leaked days ahead of The Deathly Hallows' release and I was like: "this is clearly some fan written bullshit". When I actually got to it I was pretty upset.

I get why she did it. That story required a happy ending and she wanted to close the gaps so nobody could sequelize it. If only she also failed to sequelize it.

I agree it's not despised, but it's definitely... divisive, and it's not just a neogaf thing.

Rowling's souring on Hermione/Ron is so odd, and I can't help but wonder if it's because she saw herself as Hermione and doesn't want to end up with a Ron, lol.

The real problem relationship is Harry/Ginny, who have absolutely nothing going on.

Why not Sirius?

Oh my god, I can't believe this didn't even cross my mind. He ultimately chose Snape as the name to honour and to impart on to his son over Sirius Black, his late godfather, his confidant over the course of two years or so, and one of his father's most loyal and trusted friends right up to the end. Severus Snape over this man.

Why, JK

EDIT: Okay, I guess Sirius was used for his oldest son, but still

I actually wonder if she saw herself as a Ron.

If you know her life story, you know she WAS a scrappy underdog. Not the genius prodigy or the chosen one, but somebody who dealt with a great deal of rejection. She's on record as saying it was important to her personally that Ron get the girl, but I think she sees now that the story would have benefited from Harry/Hermoine more.

Pretty much covered by everyone in here. Also, outside of Percy, Ginny and Ron were the two most unlikeable Weasleys and I hated seeing them get happy endings. And no, that has nothing to do with shipping.

Still can't believe she named the kid after a child abusing racist.

I went through my HP fanfic phase, and even the worst stuff I read didn't have an ending that corny.

I don't hate it but it is sloppy, both in the book and the film. Also, naming the kid after Snape is wrong, weird, and creepy.
