Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier Announced (PC/PS4/XB1) - Cinematic Adventure Game

IGN said:
Debut developer Imaginati has revealed Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier, a standalone cinematic adventure game set between the events of 2014's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and this year's War for the Planet of the Apes. It will be released for PS4, Xbox One and PC this fall.

Published by the new games division of The Imaginarium - the performance capture studio behind the recent Apes films - and executive produced by its founder, Andy Serkis, the game is even being developed on-site at the company's historic Ealing Studios headquarters, making use of the same performance capture technology facilities as the film series it's based on.

Set around a year after Dawn, the game centres around a breakaway faction of apes who take refuge in the Rocky Mountains from the ongoing human-ape war, but are forced to descend into a human-owned valley as Winter draws in and food depletes. The story takes its cue from the films, aiming for a morally ambiguous take on the ensuing conflict, with no black and white decisions or clear heroes and villains. Players will take control of both humans and apes - who, because of the game's standalone story and cast, can live or die based on your decisions - with multiple endings possible depending on their actions on both sides.

gameplay? that was a cutscene.

Its a Telltale style game.

Seems a lot more hands on than any Telltale game. They're going for a decision every 10-15 seconds. There's always a lot of down time with Telltale stuff.

This looks pretty cool. Considering how they're talking about the tech though, it's not much of a looker.

I'm down for different takes on games though. Count me in.

I just hope we can steer away from "it's not a game" comments though. I won't hold my breath.

TellTale's Planet of the Apes.

Can you even move the characters though? It's pretty much a cheap CG movie reusing the assets from the actual movie.
That's why I'm saying until dawn, I don't think you could move the characters on that one, right?

Super fucking strange.

Also looks like a hot mess, animations might be better technically than telltale's but because they're going for a realistic art style, they look worse. Scenes seem to be missing sound effects and music, voice acting and character interactions seem so awkward. Something about it reminds me of a modern take on B grade Playstation 2 games. Again, I find it super fucking strange that this game exists.

Looks like a FMV game except it's not FMV.

I reckon it would look a lot worse if they went with live action adventure game for the humans scenes and then mixed it with (super cheap) monkey CGI scenes.

i assume this is all really early footage. the foley sounds just seems half assed. and listening to that ape "dialogue" was just weird. nose breathing sounds and ruffling noises with no ambiance or anything.

not a good first impression at all.

More like until dawn, I'd say

i'm not sure what distinction there is between the two besides until dawn having WAY better production values...which this clearly has non of, so i think "telltale game" is a more apt comparison for that reason alone.

I was in until I heard “Telltale style”. Such a shame because it’s such an interesting world to explore.

Man oh man, so many people can't tell the difference between a Telltale game and a FMV cinematic adventure. Here's how it'll look like (only animated instead of live action): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sw17RyPedmk

So it's "worse" if you want the game to be more interactive, it's "better" if you simply want to watch a non-linear interactive movie.

Executive producer Andy Serkis...Ok I'm interested. At the very least we can expect excellent motion capture and story (hopefully).

And I don't get all this snark about "gameplay"..suddenly Telltale games aren't games? Point and click games aren't games?

I think it's more that Telltale games are more interactive cutscenes where you do some choices, than the regular point and click adventure games where you actually move around and examine the environment for items you use to solve lots of puzzles. Both have their place though I do prefer the more classic style myself.

I've never played any of the Telltale-style adventure games, but this has my approval because of Andy Serkis and the Planet of the Apes name.

I'll be following this one very closely!

Lashley

Why does he wear the mask!?
I love the Ape movies, may play this.

PC release? EDIT: Yes. Definitely on my watch list.

The human character models look great, but I must say it was an odd feeling trying to adjust to the apes as I'm so used to seeing super high quality CGI models with very believable facial expressions.

This looks cool as hell.

What's with these ridiculous 'looks like a PS2 game' posts? The lighting and texture work looks fantastic, and animation work is solid.

Can't say a new decision making game in a post apocalyptic setting is that fresh. I was hopping for the full fledged Planet of the Apes society as in the original film. (but that's probably too much of a 90's point and click setting)

Telltale making PS2 games now?

WTF is this garbage? This looks a generation ahead of Telltale's jank.

I'm intrigued by this but based on the gameplay video, the comparisons to Telltale's games or Until Dawn seem ridiculous. It looks like it's closer to a FMV game than anything else, with the player having no control over the character, just what choices they make. Still, it looks cool.

The performance capture looks like it's a generation behind stuff like Hellblade. Strange, considering their background.
