Just posted my early impressions of F1 2017 (after 4.6 hours of play) on Steam.

Thought I'd crosspost here for those who are interested.

*** EARLY IMPRESSIONS - NOT FULL REVIEW ***

These impressions are designed for people who have played F1 2016 and want to know if it is worth the upgrade.

First up, the car handling. It is so much more fun to play than F1 2016 - largely due to updating the driving model to match the new technical specifications in the 2017 season. We've heard the real life drivers say how fun the new spec is to drive, and that is certainly represented in the game. You realise pretty quickly that you can carry considerably more speed into corners, as well as push the car harder when exiting. It really has more of a "hold your breath" sense of dare when you aggressively attack corners and I have caught myself giggling a few times when a daring maneuver pays off. That said, you still have to learn the limits of your car or you will be punished for taking it over the limit.

Secondly, performance. (For reference I have an i3 6100, 16gb of DDR4 ram, Radeon RX 480 8gb GPU, 256gb m2 SSD, Logitech G29 wheel). For some reason, F1 2016 always threw random frame rate drops at me, regardless of what graphical settings I was using. I'd be coasting along at 85 FPS and then suddenly the frame rate would drop for a second to the sub 50s, which affected my driving performance. I was desperately hoping that this would be fixed in F1 2017. And it has! The game not only looks better than last year, but it also seems to look better while not decreasing the performance compared to F1 2016 and most importantly, the random frame rate drops are gone. I'm so happy about this. It's smooth as silk.

Thirdly, career mode. I put plenty of hours into career mode last year, and while it was great, it was crying out for expanded depth. I've only done one 50 percent length GP for Haas so far, as well as the first invitiational event, but I can already see that they have injected it with more life and depth. The tech tree looks seriously cool, and you are really going to be able to develop a car over the long run that suits your particular driving style. The invitiational event was also a nice little distraction, and it was great to drive (and hear the roar of) a V8 classic). They aren't just reskinned cars, the driving experience is very different, and very fun.

My biggest gripe with F1 2016 was the difficulty settings. I (and many others) quickly found myself stranded between two difficulty levels (e.g. expert too easy & master too hard) and it was impossible to find a middle ground that provided a challenging but fair racing experience. I am thrilled to say that Codemasters have listened to the feedback and provided a 1-100 difficulty sliding scale that allows fine-tuning. It only took me a couple of free practice sessions to find my perfect challenge level and as a result, my first grand prix provided a very fun and competitive midfield race as you would expect from a Haas car this season. Of all he great changes Codemasters have made this year, this is oddly the one that I am most happy about. Such a small tweak makes all the difference.

So to answer my point at the start of the review... is it worth the upgrade from 2016. YES! YES! YES!

If Codies put this much love into the 2018 edition, I will happily upgrade again!

Aiii

So not worth it
Looking forward to playing it tonight. Haven't used my G29 in months so I've been waiting for this game for a while. I really do wish it came out a bit earlier in the season, but oh well.

Ah nice!

Yeah first if you are in front of the grand stands it's the left one. View of the start finish straight, first corner and exiting towards eau Rouge. Had a Friday ticket last year and loved it.

Was busy at the track today by the way!

We leave tonight from Amsterdam and sleep in Luik, gonna leave early tommorow morning for qualifying. Traffic jams are always a pain in the ass at Spa.

That's some nice seats you have there! Enjoy the weekend!

Alright, time to get back in the groove. The summer break passed without me missing F1 at all.

Now lets hope Mercedes hasn't outdeveloped Ferrari.

Stop It

Perfectly able to grasp the inherent value of the fishing game.
So, Honda power going well, oops.

This is what happens when you declare your reliability problems fixed after 1 race.

Hopefully fixable without a grid penalty but expecting a full engine change for Alonso.

Massa into a wall trololol. Usually if put it to haha Felipe Crasha, but what if he's just self reporting his vertigo as fixed before it really is. Hopefully the medical centre can clear him to race.

It was always expected that Mercedes would dominate Spa. Getting past one Mercedes would be a good result for Ferrari.

Also after I learned that the Monster LH drink is pretty calories reduced. I can't stop drinking it anymore.

I can't believe David Croft is insinuating that Massa crashed because he was unwell and missed a race. What a piece of shit.

He's such a muckraking flog.

Di Resta's silence spoke volumes. I was half expecting Croft to tell Di Resta to suit up.

I like to think that Mercedes will find some way to fuck up.

Relax, they could have won Hungary had they stuck to doing Q2 on the softs but felt the delta between the soft and super soft was too big (it clearly wasn't). They have a habit of snatching defeat from victory this year

Why do so many people pronounce Verstappen's name as if there's an h after the s? Stop it!

We've lived through decades of people calling Schumacher "shoo-mukker" or "shoe-mekka". Though pretty much any non-english name with a ch falls victim to this widespread pronunciation inability.

Now where the hell did they get the "sch" in Verstappen from? That's not even an english thing...

Definitely a perfect time to jump back in.

You'll love the career mode.

Oh my god, I am so glad I did.

The game is such a MASSIVE improvement over 2012 lol.

I guess that's what happens when you experience 5 years worth of improvements in the franchise all at once.

Career mode is actually a lot of damn fun now and the visual fidelity on my Pro is inctredible, 4k and HDR makes this game look crazy good. It's definitely a massive improvement over the PS3 graphics I experienced in F1 2012 lol.

I always wondered, when i heard it the first time on whatever F1 show i was watching i was sure his name was spelt Verschtappen.
But then i saw it written out and couldnt understand why SCH is included when so many pronounce his name.
Keep it simple.
