New Board Gaming |OT2| On Tables, Off Topic

Did the Exit Pharaohs Tomb tonight.

First physical escape game I've done. My group only got "stuck" on two of the puzzles. It was pretty fun, with lots of unique things happening.

Can someone who has played more than one in the series say how enjoyable say the "Cabin" scenario would be now that we've done this one to completion? How much do the other entries rely on the same tricks? Or are they unique enough that there wouldn't be any things like (SUPER DUPER SPOILER)
The "Blue Print" and the "Tomb Lid" components
in the other games?

Would you recommend just jumping into the game with the expansion?

I agree with Neverfade, I don't see any problem either. The only thing that changed completely from the original core game is the battle. You could may be play a game with the core if you want to try out the original tactic cards (and some in your play group might like it better) but I find the new mechanic to be superior. The game is modular in the sense that you won't miss out on anything if you add in the expansion because you can either play with the either the mission set from the core, or the new set from Rise. Only some cards get added to the mix (like the recruit cards). The objective cards deck is also bigger and you just have to set them up from the pool of cards (instead of using all of them which add more replayability and harder for Rebel to know what cards are in that deck).

Apparently no one read my massive Oh My Goods review. I might have gone a bit overboard, oops. :p

Tonight we played:
* Great Western Trail, 3 players
* Biblios, 4 players
* Village Idiot, 4 players

This is the third time I've played Great Western Trail. The first two times were with 2 players. Even with only one player new to the game, it took forever, along the lines of 2 - 2.5 hours. I can only imagine finishing a 4-player game in under 3 hours takes experienced players. I still like the concept of Great Western Trail, but I'm terrible at it. Every game thus far has been won by whoever bought several cowboys and decent cows, but I'm convinced there MUST be some semi-consistent ways to win without doing that. I've tried several things and failed at them all, but I still want to try a few more times.

Biblios remains a game I'm fond of, even though one of the players apparently didn't understand the scoring explanation. It's such a unique card assignment + bidding combination. I tried to emphasize how scoring worked to begin with, since it's the most important part of the game, but I'm still not good at teaching that apparently.

It was the first time I've played Village Idiot with the correct number of players, which made it more intense than usual due to how limited everything felt with just one deck of playing cards. It's still a nice chill game so you don't have to think much.

I actually did that exit game yesterday.

the blue print was super stupid especially since there isn't any good clue for it. The lid one was fine though as I instantly went for that.

overall I enjoyed it though. I haven't a clue about the other ones but i have read in general the escape room games like to use
4th wall breaking stuff
the game that I played before that which I think is just titled escape room the board game actually had us
call a phone number that we found in game to get the next clue.
it was odd, awesome and stupid all at once @_@.

on the plus side I managed to get through the exit game without ruining anything in the box which was nice lol though obviously not the intended way to do it :p

We didn't get stuck on either one of the things I had in my spoiler, the first one just took us ~20 mins to figure out.

We got stuck earlier on with some simple dumb things.

Hoping someone who has completed the other two scenarios can chime in with how unique they are though, I'd love to do more but not if they all use the same tricks.

has there ever been any discussion here about selling/trading board games here on Gaf?

light discussion, and in the b/s/t thread there are people from time to time that try.

I would love to trade some but alas no one lives near me in here and shipping is quite expensive for most board games.

I have now lost 12 times in a row on Oh My Goods Longsdale chapter 2.

It's not even close, and this is with me specifically following the strategy the designer told me on BGG.

I'm determined see this through. I'm probably going to start taking photos so people can tell me if I'm doing something totally dumb.

The first totally dumb thing you're doing is playing oh my goods longsdale

I have been out of town! I agree on all points, strongly.

I have only played the first chapter twice. First time I had some bad RNG and could never get food chains going. Dug and dug and dug entire game and never lined up. Game two I thought I won but going back through BGG rules questions I don't believe I did. I had enough victory points if I would include my gold but I read on BGG that the gold you use to pay for the chapter objective doesn't count towards VP. So I ended up 2 measly VP short. Plan on beating that chapter today and moving on to two.

NMBR 9 was a big hit at a family BBQ this weekend. I wish it played more than 4 though.

Two sets is the common answer. It's an individual puzzle space, really, so you could easily play it with two sets & one person turning over the card. Enjoyed my play of it this weekend.

I drove way too far down to Jacksonville yesterday to do some things and I went to the CoolStuff store there. I wanted Go Nuts for Donuts and Codenames Duet, but they were out of their copies of Codenames Duet in the store, so I just left with Go Nuts for Donuts. They had two copies of NMBR 9 and I'm kicking myself for not getting one though. I woke up this morning and thought 'Why didn't I grab that, Great Western Trail, the Rebellion expansion, and Junk Art?' They also had Wasteland Express Delivery Service, which at their CSI price was a great deal, but I'm still going back and forth on if I should add a copy to my Dino Island pledge manager, if that promo card pack is worth the extra money.
Glad to hear it was a hit with you though. As soon as I saw it I thought it looked like a perfect game to play here at home with my family, and then I go into the store with the intention of buying a family game like Go Nuts for Donuts and put the copy of NMBR 9 that I was looking at back onto the shelf. Shoulda bought it.

I read it now :) thanks for the review. Oh my Goods is actually in my top 10 of all time, but I am not going to get the expansion after your review, it seems like it removes the things I love about the game and adds things I really dont want in this kind of game. (more setup, more rng etc)

Also on a different note: Got Runewars to the table with my wife today. I am normally a euro gamer through and through, and this is very much ameritrash, but man do I love it.
It feels like Heroes of Might and Magic as a boardgame. Cannot recommend it enough, and its nice that the game feels complete, no need for expansions.

It is a little disappointing to me since I like the base game so much as well. Unfortunately I just checked the all-inclusive rules and they still appear to use the win condition rules and the event card setup.

What I'm hoping is that if I use the event deck but go back to the base game rules, the actual new building cards will still improve the game. The event deck adds some RNG and setup time, but for the all-inclusive game it's a fixed set of 14 cards or whatever, and it might not be as bad. I also might try removing everything but the new buildings, and maybe one of the character cards.

*edit* Someone pointed out the new fixed round number may be helpful to prevent rush strategies. I suppose that's true, but I didn't feel they were necessarily overwhelming before.

You didn't think Heroes were awful? C'mon now.

hehe no I really didnt. The supporting rule that they added in the revised edition makes them feel even more useful without making them overpowered (them joining battle as Tom Vasel suggested would, imo, bog the game down and make them OP).

Anyone have any impressions of Near and Far?

I like the look of it, but I've never played a 'story telling game' and wonder how that actually works and how well it works on the table.

We played it once and it was alright as far as game play is concern. The game is really meant to play as campaign game however where you play series of game something we really don't have the time to do.

Ah, that explains it. I always forget the version available now is the revised edition. I own the original release so the change came alongside the expansion and I associate the new Heroes rules with that.

I stand by the original Heroes rules are awful.

Yeah I read the original and I agree there. But the support rule makes them feel useful and as a part of your actual faction

Latest weird question:

I've seen a suggestion to try Two Rooms and a Boom at a largeish family gathering, which sounds like fun - but I suspect the actual subject matter wouldn't go down too well (young kids, want to avoid the concept of 'you lose and you die'... and, for that matter, the concept of "You die... but you might still win!").

Any idea how I could retheme it to something more appealing? I think cops and robbers wouldn't quite work either, but it'd be more palatable. I may be using Sushi Go or Ticket To Ride cards for role assignment (Edit: Or Codenames, that's better... hmmm...), so it might be something like "The chopsticks are teaming up with the Wasabi to try to ensure the Nigiri gets dipped, with the Tempura trying to protect them..."

...but it's still all a bit convoluted! A more cohesive theme would be good.

Reminds me of a version of Timebomb I translated for work with the kids : the bombers are tricksters and the bomb is a fart cushion. Now everyone playing is calling the bomb "the fart".

So we finally got a chance to play some Shadowrun Crossfire. About 10 games in, and this is easily the best deckbuilder I have played. I really like the Legendary Encounter games, Ascension, Star Realms etc but the different approach this game takes really puts it above and beyond. If you ever played a deckbuilder, you probably know that the first few turns always are very uneventful and later on you get really autopiloted in your play choices. You combo off to do the most in your turn possible every time, which is perfectly fine. I enjoy having huge turns and all, it is basically why I play deckbuilders.

This game changes that up by dropping "buy" cards, all the money you use to get new cards is earned by clearing obstacles, and having all cards you buy go directly to your hand not your discard. This makes it so that every turn is very important, and every card you buy needs to be helping you immediately or you WILL lose very quickly. There are a few other interesting things about it as well like role selection, legacy upgrades and the Crossfire deck which basically flips every turn to fuck you.

It is a shame that this game is very much out of print now. However, if you like coops and you like deckbuilders, I strongly suggest you look into getting Dragonfire later this year. It is a implementation of Crossfire within the Dungeons & Dragons setting instead of Shadowrun.

GAF, help me. I've been out of board gaming for a few years now, and want to get back into it. BGG is overwhelming. I haven't play a new game since 2012.

We got burnt out playing games like Mage Knight, Arkham Horror and Earth Reborn.

I just want to sit down with my spouse and have a good time a few days per week.

The only games we've been playing for the last few years is the Lord of the Rings LCG and Warhammer Age of Sigmar but I don't consider Warhammer a board game.

How does Ra compare to other auction games? It's one I've always looked at but never got for some reason. I have a couple other light auction games like High Society and For Sale, does it scratch a similar itch?

Grab some lighter games like Patchwork, Agility, Ticket to Ride, Pandemic, Forbidden Island...Stuff like that. Alternatively, are there any themes you're drawn to? Even obscure themes?

Wait, what? When did that happen? :( I'm a big fan of Crossfire as well, have the expansions even.

Most definitely out of print. I only got a copy because Catalyst brought some to their Gencon booth. One of the designers said they want to get another expansion out after Dragonfire is settled out of the gate.

watch for pandemic legacy to go on sale again for $35-$40 and pick that up.

it's a nice co op experience with a lot of unique mechanics as a legacy game. it can only be played through once really, but that will result in you playing 10-20 games of pandemic.

also if you liked arkham horror back in the day, look into the card game which is more story based and well card based :p

Ha, I have earth reborn in the closet but haven't brought it out for years. I did a scenario or two and had fun but the thought of the sheer setup killed any additional plays at the table.

Another quick question as I plan to buy far too many games for this trip:

Does For Sale have any content that's language-specific (other than the instructions, but I'm comfortable with them!)? I'm looking at a french copy (to save on delivery), and was wondering if there would be an issue with that.

Huh, I just looked on Amazon and the core game is $110 D: I had already planned to pick up Dragonfire, since I'm a huge D&D nerd, but that's still disappointing. Is it OOP forever, or just between runs? I can't imagine they'll get much backing to release an expansion for a game that's basically done.

They are releasing a 2.0 version of it basically, called Prime Runners edition. It is the same game but it takes some of the changes from Dragonfire and pulls them into Shadowrun.

I haven't touched my copy in awhile but I am pretty sure it is just pictures and numbers.

100% language independent

Then I'm adding CodeNames, Las Vegas, For Sale and Incan Gold to the tally. And now I really must stop.

(Plus vague plans for cobbling together various components to play The Resistance, Skull, Two Rooms and a Boom and Werewords)

We won't have *time* to play all these... but I'll worry about *that* later!

Yay my account was approved! So last week I played Rick & Morty: Anatomy Park and it was pretty fun, fairly casual. Each player starts with a hand of tiles and they have to lay them next to other tiles to score, what's odd is you also have a player piece (rick, morty etc) running round on the tiles laid down, they need to be next to an empty space for you to lay a new one.
Diseases appear and move round, you can fight them with very basic dice combat. The humour and art is spot on, e.g. one of the tiles is 'the prostate gland ' and has a sign next to it saying "no fingernails".
It's definitely on the goofier end and you probably need to be a fan of the show but there's enough strategy to sink your teeth into. My friend who's strictly a euro guy enjoyed it.

I too plan to get Anatomy Park at some point, so it was nice to see what someone thought of it. I'm more excited about the deckbuilding game despite it being a Cryptozooic deckbuilding game.

So I don't know if anyone here plays it, but I just learned that the people who made Wits and Wagers are doing a Kickstarter to make a Vegas expansion for the Party version. You can pledge to get just the expansion or get the Party version as well if you don't have it already.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/northstargames/vegas-wits-and-wagers
So a small update to this: The Kickstarter is ending tonight and it well surpassed the goal. The only thing left are a few stretch goals to add more questions.

BattleCON Trials is my new go-to box for play (whenever that may be). It showed up yesterday after getting lost at the post office and the tuckboxes make a whole lot of difference. Being able to open the box and be playing within a minute or two is fantastic and really makes some of the other sets look worse.

Any thoughts on Consentacle: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/990619951/consentacle-a-card-game-of-human-alien-intimacy? I know I've heard of it at some point. I love that art and those acrylic stretch goal tokens look nice. The idea is very cool to me. I'm having a hard time figuring out who would ever play it with me though.
