Microsoft adds Phil Spencer to its 16 member Senior Leader Team

Awesome. People can probably stop the "Xbox is dead after the One" takes now. This seems like a clear indication that gaming is important to the overall interest of the company

Phil Spencer as MS CEO when?

Probably never. MS's makes the bulk of their money off of enterprise software and cloud servers nowadays. He would have to curb stomp the competition for years as head of Xbox for him to really even get much of a chance at taking the top spot.

The problem with this is that those games haven't made a significant impact on Steam and probably haven't sold as well as their Xbox ports as well. I think if they start finding serious success on the Windows side over the Xbox side, then maybe hardware really won't make much more sense for them. They'll only have to focus on Windows services, but we aren't at that point.

Well, all of those titles released on steam later and also were smaller/more niche. And the steam versions have still consistently outsold the Windows store versions. If they released like Halo 6 or Forza Horizon 4 same day on steam and Xbox/Windows store I think the results would be pretty different.

I'm not saying they're going to give up the Xbox right now (they are about to release a new one!), simply that they're trending in that direction enough where that in 2-3 years I could see them not wanting to launch another Xbox and sticking to offering their big games on PC.

You mean XBL/DD/Licensing etc. Hardware has been down in volume/revenue for a couple of quarters iirc.

Hardware is carrying XBL/DD/Licensing even with being down, it's not like the Windows side is. Why you even here?

Whoever Satya Nadella passes it down to will be a cloud & services thinking guy like himself who can take that part of the company further. Xbox itself & the competition won't even be took into consideration when it comes to choosing wether or not Phil will be replacing him as CEO. Xbox Game pass and using the cloud for games like crackdown will have more effect on it IMO so if that takes off massively it could happen, but it won't happen anyways

Never say never, always believe in Phil Spencer.
He save windows store with his division alone, 2 months away from his real vision for Xbox, MS will see real Phil Spencer effect soon.

2 months? Xbox One X ain't the real vision of Xbox...just part of it.

It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.
But Microsoft are backing out of the gaming business...

So uh how much power does this new gig give him

Not really, but it shows that he is a thought leader at MS which is great too see.

Ybarra should be next in line on the list of XBOX folks.

I don't know, I see this as nothing but MS realising that the head of their gaming division––the second biggest gaming division in the world––isn't represented in its 16 member senior team. I.e. the more he's not represented, the more the optics become that they still don't have much faith in their Xbox division.

Looking at the list, Phil looks to be the only person who reports up two levels. Everyone else reports directly to Nadella. Phil's boss already represents Xbox. So would seem to be a pretty meaningful appointment to have him at the table.

Congrats to Phil. On a side-note, I gotta say, I really like Nadella's Microsoft
Hard not to, considering Balmer's short-lived era

That's not really want the results show like I mean
If you're talking windows gaming that isn't surprising given the current situation and the store still largely been in it's infancy.
Why you even here?
Did i hurt you or something lool? Last I checked am allowed to enter whatever thread I want to and comment.

Congrats on the promotion.

Hopefully this means they get someone better running Xbox as a division if he's overseeing gaming as a whole.

He's been head of gaming for a while. If anything this allows him to add his voice to the overall company decision making vs. it being filtered through Terry Meyerson.

Good Job Phil, well deserved. He doesn't get enough credit for the work he's done turning around the Xbox one considering the condition the original head honchos left the platform in when they hightailed it out after the disasterous introduction. Peolle don't realize, butit takes much longer to fix an issue than it takes to crest one.

The Xbox one X is in a league of its own, for better or for worst, but importantly, focused on gaming.

And this proves exactly what everyone in this topic is saying, about how GAF says something an masse like Microsoft is quitting gaming and it isn't true outside this forum. You don't buy consoles for third parties, that's great, have a cookie. A vast majority of people buy Xbox/PlayStation to play with their friends who have the same system and to play multiplats like CoD/Madden/2K. Does exclusives help a console? Of course, but it isn't be all end all. Look at the Wii U which had some of the highest rated and amazing exclusives last gen. Had shit for the big AAA multiplats and look what happened.

Most of them will avoid this topic like the plague.

First of all, ewww....my comment had nothing to do with what GAF thinks about en masse about Microsoft. My comment has nothing to do with that so I have no clue what you are trying to connect here. I'm talking about first party games period

Secondly, The point being made was not that first parties are the end all be all. You made that claim....however having a strong first party does a lot for the console....literally. The Wii U is an example, sure, but that doesn't discount all consoles including the Switch, and both Xbox and PlayStation who's entire identities are defined by their first parties more so than the third parties. Like why water down something that? I said I solely don't buy them for multiplats because it's true. I didn't buy a switch for the purposes of only playing with my friends and that goes for a LOT of people. Zelda was a compelling game I HAD to play along with a LOT of people. But at the end of the day, I can still buy a console with first parties that allows me to continue playing with friends and whatever else. Bug for everything Microsoft does right,, I don't think it's fair to pump the brakes on something that is equally important to making sure customer service is good, having a competent UI and network, and also having backwards compatibility.

Microsoft didn't spend money making Halo and Gears and Forza multi-million dollar franchises if they didn't matter. They do and will continue to matter as long as the gaming industry lives.

Congrats to Phil! He definitely deserves it based on his time with the company. That he was able to make as much progress as he did with the Xbox One surely helped the decision here as well. I wonder if this helps him gain more influence for his division.

He also speaks fondly of Satya, like he just gets 'it', Phil says Satya mentioned he doesnt know of a single windows product that have fans like Xbox does, passionate fans that camp out all night to purchase their products, apparently that reaction to BC announcement sent shockwaves at MS. This was mentioned in one of the E3 interviews Phil did, perhaps with GiantBomb/Jeff.

I think Satya is more comitted then any other CEO at MS on gaming, this promotion is proof of that. Xbox will be here for a good while yet.

I haven't owned an Xbox since the 360, but it's hard not to like Phil Spencer. Dude always looks like he just smoked a fat bowl of Master Kief and just wants to talk games.

Good for Phil. Although I must say I haven't been totally blown away by his run as Head of Xbox so far. To be fair he was dealt a bad hand by Mattrick, but a lot of delays/cancellations have happened under his watch. Xbox first party as a whole has been kind of lackluster this gen, in my opinion, and it seems very few inroads have been made with Japanese third parties. I also don't feel the "more power" direction is going to fix their current mind share and market share problems, but we shall see on that one. I know Xbox is really profitable and by that measure of success, good job, Phil. He just hasn't proven to me personally that he possesses the vision I feel Xbox needs.

Anyways, he's a cool dude and I like his stance on things like cross play. This seems to be a big honor, so congrats to him.

This shows that gaming is important to Microsoft. Xbox One X is the first system Phil had complete control over so lets see how that ends up.

People keep asking for exclusives but all indication point that Phil with Xbox is more focused on making Xbox the best console experience. The most Powerful console, great controllers, great online infrastructure, easy to use interface.

That isn't to say that Phil isn't a huge gamer and isn't also focused on bringing a more diverse lineup to Xbox because he also is working on that. But he said in a recent interview that Xbox should be about Power and that they kind of got away from that for awhile and he believes that was a huge mistake. I think in his mind he believes having versions of major games that played worse than their competitor was the biggest reason for loosing ground this generation, not exclusives. And to be honest I can't say that he is wrong.
