Square Enix trying to port full version of FF15 to Switch, maybe via UE4

There was some speculation that the Switch would get Final Fantasy 15: Pocket Edition, a mobile spin-off that takes the original game's story and delivers it across 10 episodic chapters tailored for touchscreens, but it sounds as if Square Enix is attempting to get a version of the console game running on Nintendo's hardware.

"We're actually doing very specific technical investigations into what's possible at the moment," Tabata told us at Square Enix's Shinjuku offices ahead of this week's Tokyo Game Show. "Where we are at the moment - we've completed those tests and have worked out where the ground lies. We're currently in the middle of the discussion and debate about what we should be doing, and how to realise that on the Switch.

"The other thing - you see the mobile version, the PC version, one thing we value is to optimise the way the game plays and the experience for the individual hardware it's on rather than a one-size fits all approach. We can't currently announce anything - we haven't come to a full decision on the best way to do it yet. We're having very open, frank discussions with Nintendo at the moment about what they think is the best thing to do. It's all under investigation."
"Honestly, when we did the technical test to see if we could use the same native engine we used on other console versions on the Switch, we tried to run it there, the results weren't satisfactory," said Tabata. "It wasn't what you'd want from a final game. It doesn't mean that's the end of that - we're looking at the options, like the customisation of the engine. To give you an example how open those discussions are - we're talking to Epic at the moment, about maybe what we could possibly do there, and if we did a Switch version maybe we'd be able to partner and do something there. Their Unreal environment is just amazing, and will be very useful. You have to have all those options on the table - without that it'd be impossible to make a decision about what we can do on that platform."

I appreciate Doom was built on an extremely scale able engine, but after seeing that I'll believe anything. I think they can do it. Good luck SE!

i guess? it ran extremely poorly on PS4 even but it's a big title so i suppose it's worth taking a look at

Guess FFXV will switch to the Unreal Engine like KH3 after all :p

Porting the game to UE4 like they did with KHIII?

It ran like shit on vanilla consoles smh SE doesn't have the wizardry it would take to put it on the switch. They don't have a single game in their catalog known for being an overachievement on a technical level.

Awesome, hope they manage to get it running acceptably in the end! Would definitely buy again for the portability aspect!

"Unfortunately, Nintendo fans, we were unable to port FFXV to the Switch due to technical issues.

THE FFXIII TRILOGY HOWEVER..."

So, all this tells me is that Luminous Engine is a dead end for them (not just on Switch) and that they're looking to use UE4 to port the game instead. This just seems like more effort than it's worth.

if they manage to get it done, it will be a historic success for Nintendo.

Since FFVII and the years of Yamauchi and the N64 carts, Nintendo hasn't received a mainline FF, port or otherwise

I for one would like to see that happen but I am not sure it will

but they seem to be convinced of the Switch's long term success.

they are probably expecting 300k~500k in Japan alone, not too shabby

Honestly, I would double dip on a Switch version of FFXV that was scaled down graphically. I'd imagine they could cel shade it, or make it more in an anime style. (I'd prefer both of those over just low resolution blurry textures)

I'd buy it again - loved my time with the game on PS4.

İs the engine customer UE4 then?

They currently run the game on their proprietary Luminous Pro engine, but it has problems with scalability, so they can't get that to run on the Switch in a reasonable fashion, at least not yet. That's why they are talking to Epic: to maybe transfer it over to UE4 should the Luminous Pro turn out to be a dead end. It'll be a massive task, though, so I wonder if it'll happen.

I think you mean FFXII HD! 😊

I'd rather take FFX again, I didn't last more than 15 seconds after I realized how fucking boring the combat is in 12. Hell I'll gladly play XIII over the abomination that XII is.

I can't see the quality being very good, if the game ran dynamically from 720p to 900p on the Xbox one with it sitting at 720p most of the time the switch version is going to be hitting like, 540p docked and lower portable.

Will be interesting to see if it runs better possibly porting it to UE4, but holy shit that can't be an easy task

Considering how relatively poorly FFXV did in Japan it could definitely be worth it to release it on a more attractive platform.

It would probably also be very beneficial to their future development pipeline if they intend to make Switch SKUs of their big games going forward.

I doubt it will actually happen though.

That would be an impressive feat. Good luck to them.

I would be really interested in this, I'll admit. I haven't played much any of the XIII games. The whole straight path thing never appealed to me but I kinda owe it to myself to give it a shot sometime.

I think they'd be better off focusing on bringing FF7 Remake and KH3 over to the Switch. If they are able to bring 15 over it would be a very late port and I'm not sure many people would actually buy it.

You just made me realize what if the switch saves final fantasy from a design stand point? We start getting old school final fantasy style games and due to the ease of use UE4 has they can easily bump everything and port it to the PS4/XO

This actually might benefit everyone who wants those older experiences.

I forgot all about FFX/X-2 HD. I'd easily take that over XII.

They are doing it with DQXI and are now trying to port FFXV to the Switch. Those are SE's biggest IPs. I would say it's already happening.

Switch will surpass PS4 installed base by next Summer in Japan. It is also portable, and reaching a wider audience than PS4. It might not be a bad idea.
