Off-screen footage of DOOM running on the Switch handheld

Come on people, the game is releasing this Holiday, they're not going to suddenly add in gyro functionality now if it wasn't already planned to be included.

If they did decide that with less than 3 months until launch, I'd be pretty upset TBH. Their time is better spent optimizing the gameplay and graphics.

Oh, looks pretty good. Better than expected.
Sure 60fps would be godly, but this still looks like a very enjoyable experience at 30 fps.

I'm not a professional game developer but if people can easily activate gyro aiming with Steam controllers for DOOM on PC then I can't imagine it would take much work or time to enable it for a Switch release.

Come to think about it they probably started to port the game over before or during the summer when Switch was showing that it wasn’t slowing down.

I know its off screen but it looks damn solid for 30fps. Also this is thee perfect game for quick on the go fun. Its moment to moment gunplay is just so damn good.

Sweet bollocks this looks amazing. This is on a tablet. We've come from the 3DS to this guys! Speaking from a purely dedicated handheld PoV, 3DS - Switch is likely one of the biggest generational leaps we've ever seen.

Still think the fact it runs at all, let alone at a fairly solid 30 FPS, while looking as good as it does is staggering. ID tech 6 is some wizardry shit.

Also makes me think 60 FPS games in xb1 will probably be fine at 30 on Switch, which bodes well for other current gen games which run at 60.
Oh you poor non Vita owning soul.

I mean Switch is still as good a generational leap over Vita as we could have hoped for, but yeah. Lol. The generational leap is only as big as you're making out if you ignore the Vita. It would be like if you called DS to Vita the biggest generational leap ever by conveniently ignoring PSP. Or Wii to one of the current gen systems and ignoring PS360.

Is there any footage of someone that is good at Doom?

I think on gamexplain atleast they said since the way they had to video it, with the switch at a angle, a camera in front of it on a tripod, and playing standing back on pro controller gave a lot of reflection from all the other TV's and lightsources around and that's why they sucked. They just couldn't get a good view of the screen and still get a good quality video

$60 is the only thing that really stings because I ended up getting it last xmas for $20 on PC and it was my GOTY. I want to play it on my couch so badly though. Perfect game for playing while watching sports.

It's crazy how far technology has come when you think about it sometimes.

Definitely double dipping for this, playing the best shooter of last year on a tablet that's only slightly bigger than the SNES doom cart.

Hmm, watching the NWR footage, this actually looks pretty decent. I might be back on board with this after all. :)

Well, Sony ignored the Vita, so we can too.

Hardly. They had most of their major IPs out on it within the first two years, released several compelling new IPs that have found new life with PS4 ports, and when it was clear the market simply didn't exist for AAA games on it they aggressively pursued the indie scene to build a compelling library.

It stopped getting major AAA support from them comparatively early, sure, but they still worked to make it as viable a platform as possible. Compare that to how Nintendo handled the Wii U. A major reason why the Switch is launching with the first year lineup it has is because Nintendo basically shut down Wii U development almost two years early to push everything over.

But if it makes people feel better to ignore the Vita so the absolute insult to good hardware design that was the 3DS is given something of a free pass then be my guest.

When the last time Sony made a Vita game? Nintendo released a major Wii U game in March.

looks fantastic

but man does it feel jarring to watch it played on a console after beating it on PC. the way he looks around feels so stiff Lol. I guess it's been a while since I've played a shooter on console in general haha. Will buy!

Just followed Digital Foundrey's settings to try out the PC version on a pad at 30 fps and half resolution, etc with low detail, and it's still a very playable game, even if it's not as playable. It's hard to say how much of that is down to having only played with K+M up to this point without playing more on a pad back at 60 fps, which I might.

But yeah... I'm not sure I'd be interested in playing this docked. That's not a deal breaker for me though.

This is looking pretty nice. The slowdown is a bit concerning, but they have stated before that they're still working on optimising the game, so hopefully it'll be sorted by release. Seems like a good effort.

I'm wondering if the stiffer controls consoles usually have will help in the game's pace not being 60fps. I know that when I play on consoles, I tend to move a lot slower than I would with a mouse - framerate is much less noticable on games where I'm using analog sticks to aim.

The motion blur certainly helps make the bump down to 30fps a lot more bearable. We've come a long way since Ecks vs. Sever on GBA. It's pretty incredible.

Hopefully they'll be able to lock it at 30, do something to smooth out the dips when there's multiple things on screen. If possible.

Is it me or does the handheld off-screen footage from Gamespot look a lot sharper than the Direct trailer for the game did? Or maybe it's the smaller screen, but even then, you would expect that the docked trailer footage should be higher res to offset it, I would think. Am I just looking at it wrong or do you folks see this as well?

This might sound dumb.

But is there away I can hide Switch icons? or move them? I would not want my brother to see it there and then ask lol

Is there a benefit on digital or physical when it comes to the icons? I notice my physical games stay there even when not on the cart.

Nintendo gamers dont play with the Vita dude.

Why does everyone feel the need to mention the bloody Vita 24/7?

Sony was done with the Vita by the end of 2012 lmao

Not actually that important
I guess that's good?

Not sure why I'd pay $60 for the worst version of DOOM, but, it's cool that it exists for people who only have a Switch.

lol
I own them all.
Don't play much on the TV, at 40 I don't have much free time that I want to spend like that; I've never hooked my Switch to the dock after the 1st day, I have a 100 games backlog spanning Xbone/PS4/WiiU and yet on Switch the shit I buy actually gets played. Already 15+ games. I also already bought and beat and fuckin loved DOOM on PS4 and yet I'm super interested: will grab it for sure when =€30 even tho 30fps is a bit of a bummer since I would've preferred scaled gfx instead but damn DOOM 2016 on a portable looking mighty impressive? It's laughable to think that the people interested in it are gonna be just Switch-only owners

Revisionist history seems to be a sport on GAF.

When the last time Sony made a Vita game? Nintendo released a major Wii U game in March.

Sony stopped releasing Vita games when the PS4 came out and become a runaway success while Vita continued to show next to no signs of life, and rightfully so. Nintendo has similarly dropped Wii U like a rock, to the point of even discontinuing production now that the Switch is out.
