We need to talk about Bojack Horseman

This series is absolutely extraordinary.

I just finished season 4 episode 11 a few minutes ago and wow.
As someone who saw his grandfather succumb to dementia, the ending was chilling. I wish I could have had a conversation as such which brought a moment's solace in my grandfather's final days.

Not even just this single episode, the themes and motifs this show handles so expertly deserves endless plaudits.

I argue this series, about a talking horse actor, has better realised human characters than anything else on television. Bojack' s arc through season 3 was astounding to witness,
the greatest deconstruction of a character since Walter White.

I urge everyone to watch this series. Push through the initial few episodes.

Season 4 episode 11 is going to make me carry that weight.

Edit - spoilers.

What?! What the hell am I not understanding? I am a David Lynch fan and I am legit not getting why people love this show.

I just started the fourth season the other day, as I forgot it had released. The show is great, though, and I did not expect anything of it when it originally came out.

Aesthetically I still find the show hard to look at, but it's dealt with such a broad range of topics and handled them all so well that I give that aspect of the show a pass.

Was getting caught part of your plan?
As someone going through some shit right now, that Princess Caroline episode in the latest season is fucking heartbreaking. Jesus.

Have you watched past Season 1? The first season is somewhat underwhelming, both because the show is finding its feet and because it's doing a lot of setup that pays off later. The show doesn't really take off properly until early in Season 2 when the supporting cast really comes into its own (particularly Diane and Princess Carolyn) and they become characters who feel like real people. The S2 episode "Chicken" was the one where it suddenly clicked on another level for me, personally, although everyone seems to have their own epiphany spot.

Taken as a whole I'd put it in my top 10 or maybe top 5 TV shows of all time. It's astoundingly smart, utterly fearless, and bitterly funny in ways and on levels that almost nothing else has pulled off in the medium.

I have a friend who's having a hard time getting through those first few episodes of Season 1 when it was, as he describes it, "a Family Guy-type sitcom". He's been getting convinced he needs to watch more from my end :).

Fantastic show. Can't binge it though. Shit is like an e-brake for my emotions. I'm slowly creeping through the latest season.

It's a fantastic TV show that's wonderfully cathartic. The themes it explores can be incredibly ballsy and it has the best supporting character development I've seen in a long time. Who'd have thought a show about a talking horse person would be so engrossing?

Plus, the visual gags are amazing. From a cow waitress giving a customer the stink eye for ordering steak, to Princess Carolyn (a cat)'s book collection including titles such as Of Mice And Men and Purrsepolis. There's always something going on in the majority of scenes that you might not pick up straight away, so it also has good re-watch value.

watched 1st season, laughed a few times then it got too tedious to watch and got boring pretty fuckin fast after few episodes. I applaud..some of you guys go thru tremendous lengths to love the show..but I cant..did what I could despite recommendations from friends who swear Bojack is like gods gift but I wasnt convinced. : /

I wanted to give the show a chance when I first heard of it, but oddly enough the reason people seem to love it is kinda why I ended up putting it off.

Couldn't get past ep1, the humour was crude and cheap *shrug*

The show sets up Bojack as a callous and crude being to deconstruct him and critique his actions with more weight. It does shy away from that stuff for more subtle wordplay and sight gags as you move on in the show.

Watch Season 2, 3, and 4 everyone! Season 1 is like a 7/10 at best, every other season is either a 9/10 or 10/10.

So when does this show get good? I remember I watched the first episode a while back after I heard all of the praise but I thought it was straight garbage.

Top 10 show of all time. Season 1 is somewhat hit or miss, but 2-4 is amazing. It's incredible how a show about a talking horse feels more human than anything else on television.

I feel like if you enjoy the nihilistic LA TV sitcom, Bojack is a perfect distillation of all of those shows, right down to celebrities playing flanderized versions of themselves.

But if Curb puts you off, I can't imagine what you'd think of Bojack.

For some reason, I read this thread title as "We need to talk about Benjamin Harrison"

Well, he was fairly progressive on race relations for the time.

To all who didn't liked it, please, force yourself to watch it until season 2! Like other people said, the first season is still searching itself and introduce chracters mostly!

It really starts at season 2!

I didn't like it at first too, but i persisted, and i fucking don't regret it, one of the best show i saw!

I'm not a huge fan of Curb, but Bojack is fantastic.

Bojack uses the setting of LA and fame as its premise, but the show is really about incredibly universal experiences.

Yeah I found Curb amusing, but not a big fan. Bojack is on a completely different level for me.

I just finished this series last night, it might have some of the best realised characters I've ever seen in any show..
Seems like the 11th episode of each season is usually devastating in some form :(

To anybody wondering when it gets good - it's recommended to get to the start of season 2, but it starts to pick up and get enjoyable half way through season 1. Just push through it, it's worth it, and I don't think you can really skip the early stuff like you can with some other shows (like TNG).

I use Curb as an example because everyone knows it, but to me, Bojack is basically an animated version of Maron. Both characters almost love to live in their own misery either through willful ignorance or sociopathy. lol

Like 5-7 episodes in of Season 1, the quality increases exponentially, and then pretty much just never lets go. But yea, the first few episodes are pretty much universally agreed to be kinda rough, but ya gotta stick with it.

The latest season wasn't as good as the others imo. But it's a extraordinary show that says alot of truths you don't want to hear about life, relationships etc. They seamlessly move from gags to gut punches too.

I remember when I first started to watch BoJack Horseman I thought it was going to be Netflix' version of Family Guy.

So I kept having it on as background noise.

Then Season 1 Episode 8 happend. (The episode with Herb)

It was then when it finally dawned upon me that I might have been wrong with my first judgment of this series.

From there on out the series became that emotional Rollercoaster that I came to love.

It's a show about a bunch of idiots being a bunch of idiots. Not once has the show managed to move me at all, simply because everyone is a dumbass who deserves everything they bring upon themselves.

Love the show, and loved the most recent season.

Yeah, it takes a while to pick up, but once I realized that the show really isn't just a raunchy comedy was when it paid off for me.

It's not, trust me.

Same.

Though the show did manage to move me but damn, most of the characters act like such assholes, biggest one being BoJack himself that it's hard to care for him.

I think Bojack needs to be characterized more as a drama with comedy elements and not the other way around. Seems like perception for those who haven't seen the show or only have a few episodes under their belt find it bad because it's not all that funny. I kind of agree that while there are some good references, hilarious puns, and absolutely deep cuts, the meat and potatoes of Bojack are how the characters are portrayed and how relateable an animated horse can be when it comes to the human condition and all of the shit that comes with it.

I can agree with you on this being the case for Bojack, but not for the reasons you describe.

Watch past Season 1. If you have already done that, congrats on being a robot, I guess? I would not categorize anyone on the show as a "dumbass" outside of Bojack, and he's too malicious in his life choices to merely be a dumbass.

Fuck man, what else is there to say?

Truth though, if you aren't feeling it right away try to give it more of a chance. If you get to season 2 and still don't like it, that's cool.

*Edit* also if award winning character actress Margo Martindale doesn't excite you nothing will.

Man, I finished season 4 last week, and I still can't stop thinking about the Princess Caroline and Henrietta episodes. Depressing as fuckk..

That's pretty much how I feel, I really don't get it. I don't think the characters deserve what's happening to them, I'm just never moved. The heavy-handed satire often feels like someone's repeatedly asking me "get it ?! Get it ?!" after a joke ; the animal puns add absolutely nothing to the show and are distracting at best. Many characters are just too stupid to be relatable. All of this takes away most of the emotional tension as far as I'm concerned ; show has no punch. Many critics I like love the show, which puzzles me to no end.

Honestly, you're absolutey right, but that's sort of the point. They are all idiots and the only character who is really self-aware of it is Bojack, but he just can't escape it. Bojack knows how terrible his life is and everyone else around him but is powerless to fight against it because of his mental illness and lack of maturity. There's an entire episode that revolves around his inner monologue and it's mostly just him calling himself a piece of shit the whole time (the episode is called piece of shit, actually). It's an allegory to the idea of collective eccentricity and the inherent harm that comes from its continual reinforcement in Hollywood.

This show shifts between drama and comedy so incredibly well. Practically seamless. The first season starts off pretty boring, and it's perfectly understandable that people don't go further than that, but the succeeding seasons are such an improvement. It's worth it to soldier through the first six or so episodes.

I generally don't like Diane or Todd though. Come at me.
