So it appears Just Because's production is completely crumbling. The director, Atsushi Kobayashi, had a meltdown on Twitter about it, some of which is now deleted. He's still fixing storyboards for episode 8. He blamed the studio (which is new to full-length TV anime) for being incompetent at animation production, and said that he cried for the first time in 20 years over it.

It's a shame, because you can see Just Because is really strong conceptually with its attention to detail in nuanced character acting and delicate character interactions, but the animation staff are ending up incapable of following through on what the director wants to do with it.

That is terrible. I really hope they can figure it all out and make it right in the coming weeks and not have a long delay before the rest is animated. (if at all)

The show through 2 eps is really good.

What about using a backwards held spoon?

That's disappointing. This was probably my favorite series this season so far. I hope they can figure out a way to salvage the situation.

Really? Did they increase the pace, because the first episode only covered the first two chapters of the first book. Did episode 2 already introduce
Puriketsu and Ashley
?

With the first episodes pacing I would have figured it would end either at the end of book 2 or
when Puriketsu and Chihiro 'meet'

Maybe I'm wrong then. I haven't read the source, but I was under the impression that volume 1 ended with the bath scene revealing
Chihiro was female
, which we saw at the end of this episode.

Geez, that is a shame.

Wonder if we'll have any other show capsize this season.

Yikes.

Hope the director doesn’t end up Getter Robo Armageddoning the show.

I really think about reading the manga, but binge watching this when it finished airing was a good idea, so I don't know if I can take it, waiting week after week for a chapter to be released.
Also, quoting you revealed the spoiler. Good thing I have no idea what it's supposed to mean and who you're talking about :p

Made in Abyss had some of the best world building I've seen in a while. I'm genuinely happy with how this show turned out.

Sorry! It's not really a spoiler since you finished the anime.

Well the latest chapter from manga is from July so it's more like waiting for months instead of weeks... =(

lol, someone was saying this felt very JRPG-like.
Here goes the first village and the childhood friend.
I guess the episode did a good job at lulling the viewer into a false sense of security.

Hmm... In that case I'm an idiot, because I'm still not sure what that's supposed to mean 😂

Ugh... I guess in that case I'll wait for a second season.

Best opening probably goes to The Ancient Magus Bride for me.

I'm trying to draw a line between him fixing episode 8 story boards and the studio's incompetence in animation production. Was something miscommunicated/misinterpreted in the boards or was there some misinformation on deadlines?

Don't remember hearing production issues for the studios previous project Gamers last season. I'm guessing burnt out animators from that and not enough outsourced animators to pick up the slack?

Gamers actually had production issues of its own; they were just less noticable because the production was less ambitious and it came first and so didn’t have to crunch its lead time as much as Just Because has ended up having to do.

That episode 8’s production is still backed up at storyboards means the show is far behind where it needs to be to finish on time. Plus, given that episode 2 already had five storyboarders, the director is likely still having to review multiple people’s storyboards and correct them all to bring them to a minimum level of quality, which has to be taxing. It’s a sign that the production hasn’t been scheduled and organized well, which is the most important responsibility of any primary contractor studio.

Ah, it makes sense but frankly it seems to be the usual fare in the industry(?), though it's unfortunate that it happened to something that looked so good. I am going to watch it anyways, I initially came across the prominent animation bits on twitter.

I'm really enjoying Welcome to the N.H.K. The talk at the beginning of episode 6, in which Misaki advises to Sato to look down on people to feel more at ease around them, was hilarious.

It's true that production collapses have become increasingly more common in recent years, which is mainly due to the fact that there are too many anime being made too quickly with too few people. Still, even setting aside KyoAni with its separate ecosystem, there are some studios that do better than average with maintaining reasonable schedules (e.g., Bones) and some studios that do worse than average (e.g., Actas).

As for myself, I'm going to wait on watching more of Just Because until I see how the production shakes out. I'll probably end up waiting for the BD version, assuming the show is able to be salvaged by then.

Well at this point, since it is a simple school anime, they can easily just have the characters sit around in a classroom with limited motion (or for a change of scenary, sit at the baseball mound again for several minutes, or a clubroom/schoolyard) and chat. Easy way to deliver a finished product.

Canon and LINE money wasnt enough to save the show?

A decent episode of anime takes about a month and a half to animate normally. You can do it in a shorter window but quality control goes out the window and you have to start hiring an army to finish. In general everybody’s life becomes a living hell in which they sleep, animate, and sleep again.

He might be okay if the later episodes are in the animation phase and only 8 is an anomaly since a lot of production is done concurrently. If they’re only up to 8 then there will either be a shitton of recap/delays or they will have to end the broadcast early and air it later.

The most relatable anime episode ever. The infernal creatures that mosquitos are and the Sisyphean work that is murdering them all at night without waking other people up.

Ishihama is that you.

This moved slower than I expected and most of the expostion doesn't have an ounce of subtlety but it's super duper pretty so it's okay. Those flashbacks to people
drained of emotions remind me of Texhnolyze surface.

Lupin III - The Blood Spray of Goemon Ishikawa

Didn't like this, and the gore was unpleasant. Lupin with a super serious tone just doesn't work for me.

Aiii

So not worth it
Contacted Hidive to ask about iOS showing subtitles smack in the middle of the screen and was told that their app is a few weeks away from being anounced...
We are aware of the subtitle placement issues on IOS mobile devices. Our developer team is currently focused on resolving this issue by launching an IOS app. The good news is that this app is only a few weeks away from being announced.

Eh, while I consider Jigen's Gravestone superior I must say I had a really great time with this one as well. Hawk was fun.
I hope Koike keeps making these specials.

Might give their service a try once the app launches. Just wished Sentai actually put all their Simulcasts on it here in the US instead of sticking it on Amazon.

hmmm attack on trains is getting an english dub earlier than I expected given the silence it has had

FUNimation Entertainment's online store is listing the following release dates for Blu-ray Disc/DVD combo packs that are part of its collaboration with Crunchyroll:

Ace Attorney season one : January 23
Berserk (2016) season one: January 16
Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress: January 16
The Morose Mononokean: January 16
Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches: January 9
All five series will have both English and Japanese audio, and Funimation will offer limited editions for Berserk and Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress. The English dub of Berserk is already streaming on Funimation's website.

In addition, Funimation's subtitle-only DVD release of Time Travel Girl is slated for January 2.

with those out of the way maybe we will finally get an announcement about Re:zero.

Voltron Season 4 Episode 1

I mean, I guess that's one way to tell a character driven story...

I’m pretty happy with HiDive. It’s a bit annoying that I need to cast from my phones browser but it’s a pretty good content lineup. I like that in some cases they include home video releases. And that they have ovas. That’s one of the last frontiers that people feel forced to look to fansubs for.

Curious to see what they support with apps. I imagine my Shield won’t be supported first. I hope they don’t just support iOS and android phones and just expect people to cast/AirPlay em.

And who knows where platforms like Xbox and PlayStation will be.

Such a shame about Just Because! And it was a really cute, down to Earth anime too. Was feeling like it'd be one of the strongest titles this season. I feel really bad for everyone who's going to be pushed to the brink with overtime and still come out with subpar to what the original vision was.
