I'm in the Halloween mood and want to watch some horror movies.

I'm not one for gore in horror movies as it doesn't add any suspense/thrill for me.

I haven't watched many horror films in the last few years so I'm sure I've missed a few good ones.

Avatar: The Last Airbender, I almost shit myself during that movie. Got all cold and clammy, my heart sunk into my stomach. Terrifying.

I just watched Creep last night. Found footage-y movie about a guy and a weirdo who hires him as a videographer. More suspense than outright horror, but it was solid. Just under 80 minutes, too, so it doesn’t overstay its welcome.

There’s a sequel out before Halloween.

Parts of that are legitimately unsettling.

Also The Thing is the all time classic. Gore happens but that’s it’s pretty sparing, and not the main thing.

Also if you want some guidance, video game journo guy Patrick Klepek does a horror movie pod with his wife, and he just put out a list of horror movies for October. Last pod ep is them putting together the list.

I liked this one. It’s subtitled but mostly quiet so it’s not a distraction.

I always recommend As Above so Below, an underrated / overlooked favorite.

One of my most liked recent horror movies. I love the Tomb Raiderish flavor added to it and it's one of the few modern horror film with actually likeable characters that aren't punchable stereotypes.

Don't trust the shitty critics and give it a chance.

I've been watching a decent amount of horror movies this month and I've come to the realization that most are painfully boring. (especially those that follow the contemporary grim-dark standard)

...and then I rewatched Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness back to back. Just relentlessly paced, perfect films bursting with personality.

EDIT: I think Cabin in the Woods was the last horror movie I actually enjoyed. So I guess all this should give you an indication of where I'm at -- none of this stuff is scary/unsettling/whatever, so just crank the inherent ridiculousness of the genre to 11.

I almost never like proper "horror" films. The number of tropes, bad acting, and complete unbelievability just takes me out of the film. I try to avoid anything involving demons or ghosts, because they're just silly concepts. That being said, these are pretty much the only movies I've ever seen that I actually found genuinely scary or creepy. I do realize I'm stretching the definition of "horror" quite a bit. None of them are particularly gory outside of maybe The Descent.

- The Exorcist (obviously)
- The Mothman Prophecies
- The Descent (except for the last 5 minutes)
- The Hills Have Eyes (original and remake, but none of the sequels)
- Pulse (original version, not that crappy American remake)
- [REC] (original version, not that crappy American remake)
- 28 Days Later
- Signs
- Barton Fink
- Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal (they're horror films, kinda)
- The Devil's Rejects
- The Shining
- The Mummy (the first one)
- High Tension (have to find the right version, though)
- Fire in the Sky
- Hellraiser 1, 2
- Evil Dead (the newest one)

My go-to material on Halloween~

Tales from the Crypt episodes
Army of Darkness
Dead Alive
Bram Stoker's Dracula

I you want something actually scary and not campy/gory though The Witch has maybe the most freaky scene in a movie I've seen.
