Destiny 2: Xbox One X vs PS4 Pro vs PC - Graphics Comparison + Frame-Rate Test

Mr. Grumpy

Grumpy see, Grumpy do.
A quick notification before this topic picks up steam.

There will be some types of threads that are more heavily monitored by the moderation team, perhaps not surprisingly, this will be one of those threads.

Digital Foundry threads are interesting but can veer off topic really quickly due to a small number of less than ideal posts. Lets all do what we can here to ensure that this doesn’t happen and if people do make posts that aren’t appropriate, please do not acknowledge or reply to them as that just draws attention to where it shouldn’t be and then becomes a part of the issue. Just let us know so they can be dealt with as quietly as possible with the absolute minimum of disruption to this thread.

Thank you.

Go Go Neo Rangers!
I played it on pro and thought it looked great. But I just don't really like the game.

Well a mate of mine who has a X and a Pro mentioned he thought it looked cleaner on the X and thats without zooming in.
I play it on Pro,PC and X1S,tbh apart from the jaggies showing more on the 'S' the game looks well on all formats.

Fluidity however...there can only be one.

Destiny 2 is not as taxing a game a some think. Additionally Bungie has always has away with their art style that takes it easy on the rendering engine.

Your point being? The Pro should have performed better?

No... Sorry, you're trying to detract away from the impressive performance of the X
...almost missed that.

Considering its CB4K on pro, shouldn't really surprise anyone that it's native on X. I kinda expected some higher graphical settings, closer to pc. Much like the Pro, a very solid but not spectacular patch

It is kind of impressive. 2x the pixels is a lot more than 40%(the FLOP difference) better.

It's almost best to ignore these kinds of posts. It's ridiculous. If the Pro has slightly better framerate on a beta despite running at half the framerate, you get a group of people thinking the Pro is doing better, but when X1X blatantly outperforms the Pro in every aspect, it's only mildly impressive....sad

From that other forum:
Weird, I thought there was a "trend" of games performing better on the Pro.

Really weird.

That being said, I'm a bit surprised it's full on native.

I mean, really? lol

The patch is trash. HDR doesn't work on the pro still? No reason to waste time on this game until it does.

I've heard that the HDR isn't working due to a bug or something, i'm sure it'll be fixed soon. Until then can any X users comment on how good the HDR implementation is?

It works perfectly well on the X. My brother and I have both noticed a huge difference. This game shines in 4k HDR on the X!

The new dynamic 4k pro update has definitely improved the look of the game for me.

Jealous of X owners. Must look really nice in native 4k.

Is this still ok MODS ?
cause this is pure bliss 😍

I think the ugly formatting and spam messages of BEAST, by which I mean posts like this, have pretty much run their course and we may start to clamp down on them where they are just spam in the thread.

However, if it is to become a meme then creative efforts to lighten the mood are more acceptable. We're not here to banish all frivolity from the forum, and GAF has always been a creative hub. As long as it's just celebrating the Xbox One X in relevant threads and not used in an inflammatory way (e.g. responding to someone discussing the PS4 Pro DF results), then we shouldn't have any issues.

I'm glad the X is already getting superior support over the Pro. I was worried that its launch window would be plagued by crappy parity deals or developers just not wanting to do anything specific to the two consoles and just copying the Pro support. Instead we're getting exactly what should be happening - superior ports for the superior hardware.

Which is expected tbh, if it wasn't then we'd be able to call the devs out for it.

the One X version is fantastic and rivals many PC's you have to have a 1070 or better to best what the X and a external SSD can do. I have two PC system i play it on on AMD FX-6300 8GB 1050Ti 4gb system and an Intel I7 4770 12GB 1060Ti 6gb system both SSD drives. neither plays the game better than the X does the intel system is close at 1080P 60FPS High settings thats about it smoothly and the AMD system does 1080P 30 fps high settings smoothly both cost far more than $499.

I also have it on PS4 Pro yes i'm stupid but to my defense didn't pay full for PS4 version and PC was free from a friend. Xbox One X version is easily the Prettiest and smoothest On my P55 Vizio.

People saying game isn't taxing that's BS yes it scales well since it has the proper options but it can stress a system.

When we've had games that are 4k on X with extra graphical features and only 1440p on pro, i'm failing to see where this is that impressive

2x the resolution between the consoles is always impressive to me. Has there ever been this big of a gap between same gen consoles(exc. Nintendo)?

Getting 2x the resolution with similar performance is like going from GTX 1060 to GTX 1080 on PC.

They just need to design the hardware smart and understand the the bottleneck, this is why extra 4 gigs vram and the massive increase in bandwidth is a huge deal. Imagine PS4 had launched with 4gigs vram as it was original going to be, the system would have been a disaster for developers consider how much ram they still reserve for the OS for a system that do less than a smartphone with less memory. PC scenario is different, with scalebility graphic setting, most of the time they are higher than consoles and some effects gets very expensive as the resolution scale up. One X is launched a year after pro and cost 100 more, imagine you got a 970 level gpu compare to something that is suppose to be its replacement coming out later plus another 100 premium on top. That like a 970 compare to 1070.

That just not true at all. Something must be terribly wrong with your PC. Medium settings at best and 30fps cap? 4K should be a walk in the park for that i7 system.

Edit: Well, what do you know, DF has Destiny 2 running on High preset w/Highest texture quality (this is already well beyond X1X equivalent settings), and a GTX 970 is enough to ensure a solid 4K30 read out. https://youtu.be/lw3lbceNk18?t=3m18s

didn't say anything about medium settings.

sure the I7 can do 4K @ 30 on high. Nothing is wrong with any of my systems it's what i have done for a living for over 20 years. look at benchmarks you need a 1070 or better for higher settings.

AND to be perfectly clear I'm talking about setting that even in the heroic events on Trostland and on titan that don't drop below the frame rates i said. because those are the real stress areas. I know what i'm doing to make a game smooth and not about bullshiting about settings and performance to sound friggin cool. those settings are 100% solid even in the stress areas and that is what counts.

and by the way for those wondering those areas on Xbox One X that used to slow down don't exist even after the 4K update super smooth. The only thing i noticed is load time on my SSD 4K vs 1080P on Xbox is a bit slower but i still zone in before everyone else.

You said none of your systems run it better than the X. Unless I missed something in the video about the X running the game beyond High preset on PC, what you stated is totally incorrect.

Jesus look at what i said each PC runs it best at. Am i speaking a foreign language? The 4K 30 on the X feels better than the 4K 30 does on the I7 which is Why i play 1080P 60FPS High on the PC. 4K 30 on the I7 has drops i didn't like in the heavy areas i stated. I was very clear. and the fact is even that POS AMD 1050Ti system costs more than 500 bucks.

Don't get me wrong the I7 @ 1080/60 Feels great 60FPS is nice but i actually prefer the 4K 30 on the One X it's smoother/prettier and loads fast.

they also didn't test that during heroic events in the trostland and on titan 6 players HEROIC all hell breaking loose. I did and adjusted accordingly. sure there settings work just fine in most other areas. A 970 is basically a 1060. You can run around all day doing the easy shit and sure performance looks like they said but when you stress in the hard areas those settings have to be adjusted or they dip I want smooth ALL the time.

Kind of wish they had pushed for more than just 4K, maybe some higher quality textures or lighting, but it looks gorgeous nonetheless.

60fps on the pc makes the game feel soooo much better. So fresh and so clean. It's like a new experience.

Edit:
Well, 144fps...

Uhh, no. 1060 is basically a 980, which is not basically a 970. Bungie has said themselves that the early sections are good stress test areas and indicators for how the game will perform. Glad you got found the best performance in your X to your liking. But when it comes to Destiny 2, its piss easy to replicate console style experience on a budget. Plenty of evidence out there to prove it. Thats that.

Did you even listen to and watch that video he did. He fucked with so many settings it’s ridiculous. He lowered render resolution and left FOV standard he didn’t run those frame rates at the default presets. The performance I’m seeing on PC isn’t bad but it isn’t mind blowing over the One X. He lower render resolution to 85 I use default 100. He didn’t change FOV from 85 my settings I’m using 105. So on the I7 which the 4770k is 3.5ghz Haswell from 2013 with 12gb DDR3 1600MHZ ram just so we are clear. So 1080p high settings at 60fps minimum which was my goal ain’t fucking bad not sure what your on about. The AMD system with the 1050ti 4gb with that AMD CPU is around the minimum recommended for the game for AMD chips with only 8gb DDR3 and I’m using same setting as the I7 BUT 30FPS minimum.

Are you somehow fuckin offended by how it runs on my PC’s.

I mean fuck I play this game across 3 platforms as I played D1 on 4 friggin platforms yeah I like Destiny.

These guys are testing on much newer platforms than I’m playing on sure the GPU’s are the same they tested but the newer platforms increase those cards performance dramatically.

Your responses are like I came in here and said “oh fuck yeah Xbox rocks pc sucks bro” which is bullshit.

Playing on the available hardware I have the One X version just is the most consistent balance of image quality performance and loading times. Pretty simple so if that somehow offends you or bothers you well that just too bad but it’s my in house experience and honest input on the matter and doesn’t mean I won’t play on one platform vs another I shift with friends from system to system.

Also what system specs is digital foundry’s test system? Don’t see that listed they did not just use a pentium for all the testing. They really should lay out their test systems specs in these and they change so many settings they need to disclose things better. Their frame rate comparisons are good but their review formats and methodology is poor I’m used to seeing detail like HardOcp GPU system reviews.

Example guru3d tested D2 this is their test system
“Our test system is based on the eight-core Intel Core i7-5960X Extreme Edition with Haswell-E based setup on the X99 chipset platform. This setup is running tweaked at 4.20 GHz. Next to that, we have energy saving functions disabled for this motherboard and processor (to ensure consistent benchmark results). We use Windows 10 all patched up. Each card runs on the same PC with the same operating system clone.”

That alone is gone boost frame rates over what I’m seeing by a lot.

I have it on PC and PS4 Pro (my main platform for Destiny because of the exclusive items), but I just bought the One X last week and I’m about to triple dip on D2.

4K Native w HDR is gonna look great on my Samsung.

What? Why? The pc version is amazing at 60fps and 1440p or up (can your pc not do that?)

I dreaded replaying everything once already considering I’d already started multiple characters on PS4 and then decided to do 3 on pc

Edit: I’ll take the 1440p and high settings at mostly 60fps that my lowly 6700hq laptop cpu and 1060 3GB card can do over a full 4k and locked 3 any day. Any content that’s not the mostly heavily populated public event is close enough to locked 60 that going back to 30fps like on my Pro just feels like an entirely different game. It’s frame city

Oh the PC version is amazing. But I made significant progress on the PS4 version before the PC version released and that’s where all of my friends play. I had every exotic, all Trials and raid gear on the PS4 version prior to CoO as well.

I have a 980ti but I only have a 1080p montitor for my PC. I need to get a 4K monitor and a new graphics card.
