God of War Ragnarök G|OT|Y

I love how Alfheim looks in this one personally, got Gears 3 Shattered Paradise vibes from it. Compared to the first they got rid of those low-res cubemaps and replaced them with actual reflections, all those nasty low poly organic things are gone to make the architecture truly shine, and every asset casts shadows this time. It looks stunning imo. But if others look even better I'm all for it.

It's not like i don't like Alfheim. But other realms are so beautiful and colorful that make Alfheim less interesting XD.
Well except for Muspelheim, Helheim (kind of the same).
Guys easy on the guy, he's clearly not well. Learn from Kratos and show some empathy.

Complaining about "Sony wokeism" while playing a game like this in 2022, because Kratos won't devour his son when hungry.
He was more caring (and super cheesy) with Pandora in GoWIII.

Oh now I get what you meant!
Thought you were referring to the temple, was definitely not expecting it to open so damn much all of a sudden. Felt like I was playing a PS2 era open world, in a very good way.

Game is fucking amazing. That fight inside the behemoth skeleton took me half an hour.
Dude! It's not even the area i mentioned lmao.
This new area is so well done and full of contents. It's even have more things to do than main area!
And the level design is almost like souls game. Fuck at some point i thought i was playing demon souls.
Best side quest ever!

Yeah level design was immaculate.

I get not liking those ND-like sequences during some main quests, but it's not like that's the whole game structure. They are what Ashley sequences were for RE4 so far.

Edit:

After actually having played a certain section:

Nah.. all those comparisons with Witcher 3 side quests didn't help at all to me. These are obviously more fun to play and much better designed from a gameplay perspective, but unless huge surprises later on, that's it.

This and Horiozon FB looks better than most of the games available right now and that’s crazy because they are both PS4 games.

Can’t wait to see what they do with actual native PS5 games going forward.

And Series X for that matter, though Series S might hold it back. We really haven't seen what this generation can do yet.

Jimbo Ryan, transfer all development to PS5 now you dog!🤣

To be fair, she was only a junior writer and said she would be more doing the codex entries, rune tablets etc. I actually like the codex as well. Not too long, quite to the point.

So not sure who is responsible for some of the cringe dialogue but doubt it's her.

Also I'm really surprised at the mixed reaction to this. If anything the first game feels like the 'DLC' and this feels like the first game. People quickly forget the lake of nine, realm tears, trolls and elves everywhere huh

I really was enjoying the game up till ironwood. The whole process was extremely boring and feels as if it was written by someone else. Finally got out of there and back to the normal game
I'm there right now - it really, really sucks. It's like listening to an album that you love, but then a bad song comes and you just want to skip to the next track. But you can't!

I pray this is the last such segment in this game because it's just a waste of time. Awful!

About 20 hours in, and I have to say that something feels... missing. The story hasn't hooked me like 2018 did, and everything feels so recycled from before. Returning to the same realms is a huge buzzkill, and a lot of the writing comes off as cheap compared to before. And that pacing! The pacing is all over the place this time around, and I dare to say is downright awful in some parts.

It's not a bad game by any means, but it pales in every single way to the original (thus far). The story needed a more iterations before it was ready for production.
The story does an amazing job of building up what will happen in the final act but i think the ending was a little underwhelming, mainly because it was clear they desperately wanted to set up spin off games or DLC and I think that was a major factor into how the story concluded.

I think the major differences between this and the 2018 game was that they left more to your imagination in the 2018 game. They did a great job of building up these different characters like Thor and Odin but In Ragnarok you actually see these characters and that kills the sense of mystery about them. There stories also end up not being as interesting as it could have been.

Ragnarok is all about character building and 2018 is all about world building in terms of the story so depending on what you prefer that will factor into which story you like more. But as a video game I think Ragnarok is better because of the combat, boss fights, variety of enemies, and the scale of what you can do in the game. I beat the story and that only counts for 27% of my progress so far.. the game has that much content.

3 hours in and I’m hooked. This will probably be the only game I’ll feel like playing for a bit. I’ve had a thirst for a good adventure game lately so this came at a good time. If you loved the first GOW then you should feel the same about Ragnarok.

Honestly I don't know how guys already finished this game. The crater is the biggest side content I've seen in any game ever. Is just too big

I am about 10 hours in and feeling the same as you. It is becoming such a chore like, walking, battle some enemies, talk, repeat.. man.

How the fuck did they get this to look so good running high frame rate @120hz.. It's consistently running a lot higher then 60fps and buttery smooth with VRR. I was initially playing in Quality 40FPS unlocked but the graphical difference is negligible. I'm someone who prefer resolution, but it still looks so good in this high-performance mode. I'm guessing being a PS4 developed game is why but jesus.. It just goes to show that the console is capable with the right optimisation. Fuck you Gotham Knights!

No offence but that is literally what a story driven action adventure is! I'm also about 10 hours in and not feeling the same so I think you might just be tired of this type of gameplay or not as interested in the story in comparison to the first part maybe?

The first part (2018) is such a blast for me. Ragnarok it is just not, it is like all over the place. I am not hooked yet.

Fair enough. I'm aways very forgiving about that, unless it's really bad, I'm not as sensitive to it.. It's like the Last of Us Part 2, that had some very bad pacing with the story and at times all over the place and it was still ok for me. As long as the gameplay is good and fun, I'm interested in the story and the production quality is high, I'm good.

Someone tell me without spoiling how far I’m into the story? Use spoiler tags pls.
I’m at the part where I just fought Freya dressed up as a Valkyrie & we’re going to Vanaheim to break the spell that Odin cast on her, binding her to Midgard. I did a manual save & it says I’m 13h 17m in, heard the story was around 20-25 hours or so, I’m playing on Balanced difficulty.

Been playing for 4 hours each day and so far it’s exceedingly good. The combat has (finally!) clicked on me and I love upgrading the weapons and feeling stronger combined with stringing together cool combos.

The opening dragged slightly but it picks up well. I’ve logged in about 15 hours but I feel like I’ve only scratched the surface. To that point, while the game is incredibly fun, I do think some parts could have been condensed a lot more for a tighter experience. I’m thinking of a colorful place where you ride a large goat (lol?).

Like a poster said, 2018 focuses on world building but this one on character, and so far the developing themes of dealing with change, changing fate, and becoming your own person is done quite well. I’d wager this game hits hard to parents watching their kids grow.

I think about halfway.

Yes blame all the dialogue on a person who joined the studio about 2 years into development. Grow up.
Flutta is typically good people. He’s just having a bad week lol.

I bet she wrote zero dialogue for this game. Not even the side quests. They already had three writers for the first game. Doubt they let a newbie take over midway through the process though i suppose anything is possible.

She probably did the lore entries like someone else suggested.

There’s a metric tonne of QOL everyone should take a glance at in the settings which are easy to overlook including the use of the touch pad, hiding the HUD, auto pick up, quick 180 turn, auto mini games, auto squeeze through cracks, auto vaulting, quick hold interactions, ffs. Seriously take a look

I have all that shit on lol. Also, I think there is one that tracks enemies better when attacking or something like that, but it seems to disable quick turn-around. It's a good tradeoff for me, the combat is more fluid now.

I'm about 30hrs in, and largely have been having the time of my life. I enjoy the pacing, its very heavy on narrative this time for sure, even more than GoW 2018 I think, lots of walking with exposition and cutscenes. but I appreciate those moments a lot. I personally dont feel like these moments take away from the action part of GoW, because when the action kicks in, it kicks in hard.

The only complaint I have is that some enemy encounters happen in very small spaces, with the geometry limiting evasion and such.

I seriously dont understand the "pacing" complaints.

The pacing is near pitch perfect. It doesn't drag on too long of doing anything. It constantly has a loop of: Discovery/Story --> Action/Puzzle --> Loot

Even the "walk n talk" moments don't last anywhere near as egregiously long as something in ND games, they make sure to add combat and loot throughout those sections.
The Angrboda section is downright horrendous, and totally kills the momentum of the story. The same could be said for Atreus' original visit to Freya. Just feels like filler for the sake of filler, which is a shame because the story in God of War 2018 was incredibly tight.
