The Japanese are lining up again... this time for Vita preorders

Well, the Vita preorders have started and what a start it is: within 2 hours, all online retailers were completely out of preorders. All.
And it currently dominates Amazon.jp:

Yeah, even that massively overpriced memory card is doing great.

Now regular stores have opened for preorders and thanks to Adriansang, we know how things are looking offline:

Famitsu.com has been covering some of the line activity. The Akihabara Yodobashi Camera, one of recurring retailers you'll see in line reports for product launches, had promised to start pre-orders at 7:00 in the AM. By midnight, the shop's line had reached the 200 mark. By around 6:00, the line had reached around 500 or so.

The shop opened up ten minutes in advance, but people kept on coming. Despite the large numbers, Famitsu says that even at 7:00 Yodobashi had not closed off the line.

Handheld gaming, serious business in Japan.

That said, I replaced my Blackberry with an iPhone 4S yesterday, and there are some fantastic games on that platform. Handheld gaming is sweet.

BTW, I still think the Vita is going to bomb worldwide. The Japanese love their portable games like no other country on the planet.

Theyre all so embarrassed they blurred their own faces >.<

IIRC, it's an etiquette in Japan that you must blur people's faces if you haven't obtained their elicit permission to have their photograph taken.

No worse than lining up for an expensive product only slightly better than the one you already own.

Capcom are fucking stupid by betting on 3DS. They should have hedged their bets and gone for multiplat with Vita lead.
Sony should've outbid Nintendo. You snooze you lose.

Sure, then they could have lost twice as much money!

I'm excited about Vita. Probably not so much that I'd stand in line to preorder it, but I'm definitely interested.

Hopefully Sony will talk soon about what it's going to do for people with UMD games.

Didn't line up this time after what I went through with the 3DS, which was easily available a short time after launch.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Wow at 1200 people preordering...the same as PSP and PS3.
THIS is loyalty!

December 12, 2004. Lengthy late night lines form at major retailers as Sony makes its debut on the portable game scene with the PSP. Famitsu does a head count at the Bic Camera in Ikebukuro and determines that about 1,200 people have lined up.

November 10, 2006. Lengthy late night lines form at major retailers as Sony releases the PlayStation 3. Gigazine does a head count at an Osaka Yodobashi Camera and determines that about 1,200 people have lined up.

Today, 2011. Lengthy lines form at major retailers as Sony begins pre-orders for PlayStation Vita. Nikkei does a count at Akihabara's Yodobashi Camera and determines that about 1,200 people in line.

Three systems, 1,200 people. Coincidence? Or evidence of a Force ala Star Wars?

Actually, I'm just wondering how Famitsu estimated 500 people for the Yodobashi line while Nikkei estimated 1,200. Since Nikkei is known for its coverage of the economy, I'll go with their count. (For the record, Mainichi Entertainment says its 700).

The same number for the third time... It's incredible. XD

I think it should be noted that it's similar numbers to what turned out for the actual PSP/PS3 hardware launches.

For just preorders.

but NeoGad said the Vita is doomed?

In my language that word means something like "scoundrel". So are you saying that GAF is inhabited by scoundrels? XD

Just kidding, I know it's a typo. :p

Go Vita! :D

lining up was probably unnecessary, considering that i walked straight into the second biggest electronics store in the second biggest city at 6pm today and got my preorder sorted in less than two minutes! people just like lining up for shit here. you should've seen the queues for osaka's first krispy kreme last year.

I like some of the reverse troll like comments. I hope this thing sells and gives 3DS a run for it's money because it's like a dream hand held.

The lines have been happening forever. Especially for a HW launch. Some of you are really that surprised?
