The Avengers being filmed with...iPhone?

"The Avengers" director of photography Seamus McGarvey has made the surprising admission that Joss Whedon's upcoming superhero team-up project used some unconventional shooting techniques.

Specifically several shots of the big-budget tentpole were done with the iPhone 4, in fact some them actually made it into the recent teaser trailer.

"The beauty of photography or cinema is that you make every choice based on the content at hand. On The Avengers, I did a couple of shots on the iPhone and they are in the movie. In fact, they are in the trailer! I understand that sometimes there is no choice and you have to go for the cheapest option, but if you are limited for choice, you can still make poignant decisions that will effect the look of the film" McGarvey told IFTN.

Sadly the cinematographer didn't says which shots were specifically crafted using the smart phone, but the quality of the footage in the trailer itself never demonstrated any visible shift in quality.

What? It can't even record video at 1080p. The iPhone 4's got a nice still camera, but its video recording abilities aren't whatsoever good enough for feature films (nor are those in ANY smartphone).

That doesn't sound right at all, but the movie did look pretty flat.
yep, i posted this in the trailer thread. the movie looks weird in the trailer, like it was shoot on a hd camcorder or something. the teaser after captain america looked fine.

Wario64

works for Gamestop (lol)
Meh. Park Chan-Wook shot an entire film on an iPhone 4 last year. Old shit. Granted it was a 30 minute short film but it's been done.

Nolan and Pfister film a movie with IMAX cameras while Whedon and his crew film a movie with a phone?

Star Wars would have looked better if it weren't so pristine looking. Highest quality is not always best way to convey mood. X-Files benefited from grainy film because it was so dark. If it were high definition blackest blacks it would have taken something away.

Probably a few short segments meant to simulate "video from the streets" ala Cloverfield or something.

Except he said several shots made it into the trailer. I just watched it again, and I have no clue which ones they are.

Maybe CSI's ENHANCE! technology actually exists now.
Adobe actually invented something like that and may or may not include it in future versions of Photoshop... too lazy to find a link to the GAF thread about it though...

Yeah, I saw that. Pretty awesome, actually.

Depends on the intended look of a film. This isn't gaming, where frame rates ruefully affect the responsiveness of user input. 60fps can look great in video, bUT there will always be a place for 24fps.

I'm not agreeing with the other guy about Star Wars looking too pristine though.

I imagine it's actually supposed to be "cellphone camera" footage within the reality of the movie itself?

There is no "cell-phone camera" footage in the trailer.

The Whedon curse continues to linger over this project. From playboy Bruce Banner to Hawkeye's dildo bow/shitty costume and now this...

Well to be fair, unlike Nolan Whedon is filming a superhero movie.

You mean biggest superhero movie flop, right?

This guy makes Synder look good, that pretty much tells you all you'll ever need to know about Whedon.

Haha, you wish.

Yo what on Earth. How are you people complaining about this. This movie obviously isn't going for dark and serious like Nolan. Whedon is great for what this is.

Yo man, dildo bow? Dude what dildos in hell. You want some military approved shit? This is a translation of a comic book into live action, homes.

Won't break the $200m barrier in the US. Guaranteed. It might make its budget back from overseas markets, but the movie will be considered a pretty big flop when all is said and done.

I can feel it, there's something about and the trailers that doesn't sell epic, which is what the movie should be...hell, the animated series trailer feels more epic.

I can't find the gif, but Hawkeye's bow (the top and bottom) look like dildo's attached to a metal rod, they even flop around like dildo's.

You're being too playful with your imagination man. That crossbow looks fucking cool. This thought should be made clear as very petty when Renner is in action when the movie is out. Otherwise I'd probably mark it down as stubbornness.

I think this movie is going to rock. Loki is going to be a fantastic villain.

You are right. They are obviously lying.

I have decided to dedicate my life to translating this sentence. Donations appreciated.

Nah, his bow shouldn't flop around when he 'opens' it, it should be more mechanical in nature, it really does look like two dildos attached to a metal rod.

Not all what I expected or hoped to see, should have been closer to the bow he has in the animated series, it's not like they need to stick to the more realist look, the movie has a God in it and a giant green monster and a man who was frozen for 50 odd years...

Hell, I'll take it further. I'll bet a one month ban that it doesn't break the $200m barrier in the US. That's how confident I am that it's not going to happen.

Lord Error

Insane For Sony
I suppose that quick shaky trailer scene with policemen shooting in the street could have been made with Iphone. Don't know what else really. Most of the scenes in the trailer are either character closeups or effect shots.
