Zelda Skyward Sword Spoiler Thread: Retelling the Legend without the black bars

I know that Link's eyes are weird, but I was meaning this:

Music: Fi's Lament (Possibly the game's most beautiful song, far more endearing and mystical than Midna's Piano theme in TP

Context: Fi is going away forever, into an endless sleep, just when she had the first taste of a human feeling, happiness, her life comes to an end.

Images:

1.- Link listening to Fi's farewell message
link2.jpg

2.- as soon as Link hears "Thank you"
link3.jpg

3.- When she is gone
link4.jpg

and as a Bonus, Zelda listening to Impa why she must stay in the past, never has a Zelda made such an expression of saddness:

zelda1.jpg

In the very end, when Fi says "Thank you" and disappears, Link's expression, together with the music and the context, I REALLY was about to cry, It was emotionally very touching and the same in the next cutscene between Impa and Zelda, Zelda's expression looks so.. heartfelt.
I wish I could fall for it.

Actually, I think SS Link always looks kinda dorky. Like he's constantly spacing out. But that's ok, I like derp Link.

Fi is still awful though. No pretty character design or asspulled suddenly-feels-feelings robot shit is gunna make me like the most aggravatingly hand-holdy sidekick yet.

If only I didn't totally despise Fi.

Guys, guys. This is the FIRST Link. He needs his hands to be held.

But clearly hands weren't held enough, otherwise there wouldn't be as much whining about the Imprisoned, or people not figuring out how to wield lightning, or figuring out how to swim, or...

It's very pretty, but it's far less memorable, imo. Much like most of the songs in SS, they sound nice, but I can't remember more than two.

Anyway, that whole Fi's goodbye scene is a terrible attempt at pulling on the ol' heartstring, especially if you felt no connection at all to the character throughout the game. I was much more moved by what they did with Impa. I saw it coming from a mile away, but it still got me...

Well, her hand holding was the kind that came when you didn't need it and was insufficient when you did need it. Like, the player was given advice for doing tasks that were intuitive or obvious. It's like opposite day everyday wherever Fi's from.

And on the pirate ship there was some puzzle--or should I say there was going to be some puzzle where you have to activate a switch outside from inside through a mesh grate in the ceiling, and before you even have the opportunity to do anything Fi chimes in "Master do you notice the bright sun beaming down magnificently in this one room? Maybe you can..." you're not even supposed to tell me that!

Actually you have to press D-pad down to get this message.

Are you absolutely sure? I strongly remember it as being mandatory.

Yes. My brother walked in and out of the room without paying attention to the Fi symbol that appeared on that spot. I told him that he should speak with Fi in this room and Fi just told him the solution. I also remember pressing D-Pad down to get the solution.
But maybe it different between American and Eurpean version. I also remember some people complaining that they had to watch a video that tells them how to insert the Wii Motion+, which didn't happen to me at all.

That only happens if you never used Motion+ before. Every Wii user needs to watch those videos the first time he uses that accessory, that's no Zelda-exclusive "feature".

This was a beautiful but deeply flawed game. I am not sure we will ever get the passionate and ideal exploration action we so deserve and desire.

Lows/Highs
Worst vehicle ever, in all of gaming.

Worst guidance in a Zelda (I don't mind having my hand held, but only when I need it, and tell me only what I want to know).

Worst controls. I absolutely love the motion controls as designed, but Motion+ is simply technically inadequate. Jesus, the Wii U might not fix this!!

Best Zelda character (so hot, and her story is fascinating).

Best Impa.

Best ending.

Best graphics (a-duh).

Best sidequests.

Best combat.

I did not get the message automatically, a Fi icon popped up for me to press.

It might have something to do with leaving/re-entering the room? I remember some people speculating that.

I have no idea if it's been mentioned, but I was playing the Ancient Cistern dungeon with my girlfriend. She's Japanese, and she immeditely pointed out that the part where link climbs up the spider's thread, followed by creepy Cursed Bokoblins, is inspired by a Japanese Buddhist story. I thought it was worth mentioning.

The whole Ancient Cistern level is an ode to Buddhism. If the giant Buddha statue at the centre of the temple doesn't clue you in, then the boss key, a mediating figure on top of a lotus, surely should.

Cons
-Huge empty boring sky overworld
-Soooo many missed gameplay opportunities. They give us a run button but theres no postman style races. Wheres my shooting gallery? how come theres no bomb bowling challenges? why no pirate ship battles, the ship cannon was awesome yet we barely use it.
-Weak final boss. Those 4 armed skeletons were harder to beat.

Pros
-Everything else
Overall Id say it goes
1.MM
2.OoT
3.SS
4.TWW
5.TP

I guess it also doesn't happen if you use the golden wiimote combi, as I didn't get the video either.

I like your opinion. I will say though, in terms of dungeon design, SS is untouchable though. I mean, the whole pirate ship level fucking blew my mind...and at my age that's hard to do.

Also, am I the only one who loved Fi? Don't get me wrong, she was annoying...but I LOOOOOVED her character model and her icecapades dance she would do. Thought it was great. I really think she's one of the best designed characters I've ever seen...simple with each polygon thoughtfully placed, great color choices...just beautiful.

Beat the game last night:

+ The dungeon design and area design the first time through is strong in general.
+ Beginning is awesome plotwise
+ Good music, better than TP but not Mario Galaxy-level.
+ Liked the artstyle
+ Liked swordfighting and the motion+ controls in general
+ Glad that there's more than one way to do nearly all the fights in the game (bosses and otherwise). Very welcome change. Boss fights are generally good all around.
+ Upgrading items/potions was great
+ Desert area with the timestone mechanic was the best in the game. Highlight of the game each time you go there.
+ Game isn't a cakewalk!
+ Skyloft was cool, well-designed town with stuff to do.
+ I did like the stealth section on the Volcano after revisiting it
+ The ending was satisfying but I wanted to see what happened to some of the people on Skyloft (LTTP-style).
+ Liked the Impa twist and Ghirahim being Fi's counterpart
+ Really loved the new Zelda character and Groose. Ghirahim was a nice change of pace.

- Definitely agree that the game runs out of steam plotwise after the strong beginning. It's like "no you can't see Zelda" and then she's the Hylia reborn and doesn't really act like her old self and once she goes to sleep there's no sense of urgency anymore.
- "You got an Amber Relic!", wish I could turn these messages off after the first time
- Fi was annoying until the ending, especially with the chiming that my batteries in the Wii Remote are low.
- I would have liked to get another item after the 6th Temple... kinda boring not getting any new toys for the last several hours. Same thing with the enemies getting recycled.
- I don't like having to find 5 things to advance the story, although the Forest one was the only one that really dragged at the begininng. The Desert and Volcano areas were fine since they encouraged you to explore different areas of the map.
- Also didn't like having to do 4 Spirit Realm collectathons. Really hated the tadtones
- Really hard to do the forward thrust on a consistent basis.
- Fighting the Imprisoned 3x was one time too many.
- Having to constantly float up to the sky, fly across the sky, land (with load times if you're going to Skyloft), etc was annoying after being used to Xenoblade's instant warping anywhere.
- Disappointed that there was no day/night cycle outside of Skyloft and a couple islands.
- Absurd pricing for some things that aren't really worth it (i.e. 2000 for Beedle's piece of Heart). I'm glad that rubies aren't worthless but that was kinda ridiclous. There were also some mini-games that were hard enough that a quarter-piece of heart wasn't a satisfying reward.

In summary, it's a good game, but really needed to be streamlined to be the best Zelda.

Not even close. Plus, the train in Spirit Tracks has been the worst so far in the Zelda franchise.

Controlling your bird like a hammer while it moves erratically at 2mph through an empty void, occassionally smacking into a wall while you're trying to get the right angle for a Goddess Chest… constitutes a miserable overworld experience.

I always thought the boat in WW was bad, but at least it never veered off course suddenly and inexplicably.

Never had that problem in the entire game.
And controlling your bird like a hammer? What kind of motions were your doing? D:

My whole flying experience:
- Small flicks to gain altitude
- Twist left/right to change directions
- Wiimote slightly down + A button to gain speed
- Z button to see the area where I wanted to land

That's it. No hammer-like situation. Always landed where I wanted.

but that was the point.

after countless of complains and whining about who it was boring to traverse the world in WW, PH and SS because their vehicules moved on automatic, nintendo now gives you a reason to look at the screen and plan your path. The wiimote is very sensible and big movements are not needed to control the bird, you will ocassionaly "waggle" to keep the bird from drowning in the clouds. Before travel boredom settles in, you are mere seconds of reaching your location. Landing near goddess' cubes is precisely an invitation to plan your path.

Ph's boat is far, very very far, worse than the bird, i'd say the train is equally as bad.

Flying was great. Flapping and diving were intuitive (flap to go up, tilt down to dive,A to boost), and I wasn't required to make pinpoint turns or anything precise for the most part, so it was enjoyable. Funny how drastically opinions vary.

The harp playing before the silent realms was f'in broken though.

That was a fantastic dungeon. The puzzles actually made me think! A revelaiton!

I had literally no issues with the harp there. Only time I had problems was playing along with Kina. For some reason I failed horribly every time.

The most memorable songs to me are Romance and Ballad of the Goddess. The sky theme is pretty great too. Like you said, Fi's song is cool, but not so memorable.

What did you think of her cum face

Flying controls weren't great, but it also wasn't punishing since the only place you used it was in a huge, empty space. So I was fine with it, ultimately.

I'm not sure why but it never happened to me. An icon never appeared. I kept hearing about how she ruined this amazing puzzle in the 5th dungeon but I never came across it. I saw the sunlight shining through and I instantly looked up and hit the stone. However, that section was a little non-linear and I had already done a puzzle similar to that. Perhaps it didn't trigger for me because I had already solved a puzzle similar to that in another room.

Holy crap, that just gave me chills again. I'm pretty sure this game gave me chills more than any other. Simply beautiful.

edit: also goes to show just how much of an impact music can make. What was just a pretty good character ended up being an extremely worthwhile one with that perfectly executed parting scene. I actually did get a bit emotional and music is a big reason why. Also hearing Zelda's lullaby for the first time gave me chills as well.

Does anyone know why Ghirahim and Fi have the same emblem on them, one being a red diamond and the other being a blue diamond?

I know both of them are spirit of swords but I cant seem to find a connection between both.

That's kind of just what I assumed. Both of them are sword spirits.

I don't know any other reason.

EDIT: I don't think I understood your question right; sorry. I guess it is just because they are the embodiments of the swords as has been stated before.
