Why is the Kotaku guy asking us for sources and getting all defensive? Do your job.

This just in! Kotaku poster goes to Neogaf forum asking users for sources to dubious news he posted.

Actually, I'm asking you to prove the accusations you're making in this thread. You are accusing me (and other reporters) of posting incorrect information, but your evidence appears to be based on nothing but assumptions. If you want to continue throwing around tired "lol game journalism" insults instead of, you know, actually backing up your claims, be my guest.

Meanwhile, as I said before, if anybody has something conclusive showing that these listings have been photoshopped, please let me know here or via e-mail (jason@kotaku.com). I will of course continue to look into this on my own, but I always appreciate hearing more info.

So here are some people pointing out what's wrong in your article and not only you defend it, you actually even blame us for not being able to back up our claim.

WHAT A TWIST!!!!

To be fair this sort of standard isn't just restricted to games. Fans of the football team I support made up a rumour about an entirely fictional player signing for the club and the local media reported it as fact, which was fucking hilarious.

I don't mind games sites running rumours. People like to know what's happening and this industry can be quite secretive, so there's no shame in getting caught out every once in a while. Running the story as fact however.. yeah.

Your post cited Eurogamer's "tipster" as a source. I posted proof above from their comments section that there wasn't a tipster - it was at best a third-hand, circulated image, and none of the people involved in its circulation claim to have seen the supposed listings in the first place. If you don't think that's cause for an edit and are insisting on some kind of smoking gun proving beyond a doubt that it was Photoshopped, I don't really know what else to say.

I do indeed think your post was cause for an edit and I have updated my story accordingly. Thanks! Please note that the comments you pointed out were not posted until after we ran our story this morning. (I read through the Eurogamer comments before running it.)

How utterly embarrassingly unprofessional, Jason. It's lucky you're at a place beset by a constant stream of illegitimate complaints and internet whiners. Your job is likely safe because your superiors likely won't care to sift through the garbage complaints and see this very real instance of shoddy workmanship and borderline plagiarism on your part.

Know that nearly any reputable site or news source would have you packing your things by now. You should be counting your lucky stars and just stop attempting to hold unpaid forum posters to standards that you've just proven to be wholly incapable of upholding.

It's not their job to fact check. It is yours, and yours alone. It's not Ignis Fatuus or Father_Brain's name on the byline. It's yours. Your actual name, by the way, Jason Schreier.

Which will likely pop up on Google for future employers who now know you're lazy, unethical and willing to lash out at a likely consumer base because you've failed to do the bare minimum of your job.

Pretty much all there is to say.

"Games journalism" is more about hits and traffic than any real fact checking, reporting, substantive articles, and god forbid investigative journalism. Why do any real work when they can take and eat a few 4Chan shoops or any other sketchy info, and try to one up each other reporting on it, do a few podcasts and call themselves "journalists". I wish I was a "games journalist". This should surprise no one.

This thread's going to get awesome really fast. EDIT: It got awesome while I was typing.

this is the greatest accomplishment of my life

I really wish you had an absolutely insane name so they would have attributed it to a jumble of nonsense. That's about as good as it gets these days.

Though el pollo diablo is pretty quality.

This should be Shreier's Neogaf tag, but it might stretch the forum (a bit).

Shouldn't you contact Play.com to check your facts rather than reading through a competitors comment section? I don't know, maybe, do some actual journalism for a change.

The problem was that Play may not have confirmed the image was real. Which would have meant Eurogamer would have the story up but Kotaku wouldn't.

As others have already said, that doesn't remotely justify adopting a "real until proven fake" policy for an easily-faked image. Hooray for "journalism."

How do websites like these make money again? There's your answer. Integrity is internet speak for "poor" or "unemployed". If a sniff of news is considered breaking, they don't give fuck, they're too busy posting for the clicks.

It's a tough job the news business. If your peers are doing it, why not half-ass and call it a day?

Real talk.

But seriously, posting something because you can't prove it's fake? 4chan should just regularly fake gaming news. It'd force some actual journalistic integrity. I don't mind rumors from reliable sources, but there's no reason to believe (based on the sources) that this would be true. Come on, guys. We can do better than this.

Oh wow at the update on the article from Kotaku

Father_Brain take your bow you've been named in a Kotaku article

Is there something wrong with their phone or internet connection?

You get a hold of the source, which is either PLAY or the publisher. If they say no: rumor, at best. How is it possible that they choose to rely on other sites???

To think they get paid for this shit. Not a whole lot, I know. But still, some fact checking has to be done.

So if were to E-mail Eurogamer a fake screenshot from a site and claim it just got taken down in the nick of time, does that mean it's real news?

Now I understand why Kotaku is banned here.

Edit: so beaten, anyway it's pretty bad that they don't even admit that they were tricked.

Edit2: Welp, seems like they weren't banned in the first place.

Awww, I want to write in games when I finish (I'm actually studying Journalism on my course now haha), you guys getting me all down.

:p But nah, I completely agree that a lot of sites need to step it up. As a reader/video game fan, there is a lot of good stuff out there that serves a purpose - but unfortunately it seems to be a lot of "in a statement to [earlier source here]" and PR write ups.
