CBS Interactive (GameSpot parent company) buys Giant Bomb

This wasn't about getting paid it was about ensuring Giant Bomb's survival.
Your support made them last as long as they did.

Do you have any evidence that Giant Bomb wasn't financially healthy? Given their expansion in coverage and hiring over the last year this would seem bizarre.

I'm guessing that since he's back with Gamespot he can legally talk about the firing. It'll help clear things up about the past so they can put it behind them.

And plus, the douchebag who fired Jeff hasn't worked for CNet since 2008. He was fired a few months after he fired Jeff. So all the people involved are long gone by now.

Jeff said something in the livestream earlier to the effect that the paid subscriptions were what was still keeping them going.

They will do it without my support. Alot of fans subscribed specifically because we liked what Jeff and crew were doing, not because we wanted to support a start up brand. If they just want to sell to a big media outlet like every other entrepreneur, that's fine, but they don't need my donation or anybody else's. We gave them that money specifically so they could remain I dependent and keep doing what they had a passion to do.

It turns out that they care more about "gettin paid" than they do being a good steward of the environment they fostered.

No, you gave them the money so they could fucking run the site. There was no clause about remaining indie forever more, they just didn't want to be at the mercy of ad companies.

Why are people so instantly hostile towards business, even good business? Does anyone stop and think about things? Ugh. If you seriously watched that video and can still spout this nonsense... you need to get your head checked.

Got bought by a different company. They're working with the Mythbusters now...which sounds pretty awesome.
TESTED IS HOOKING UP WITH THE MYTHBUSTERS
What... :O

really happy for the tested crew , working with mythbusters!
hopefully giantbomb stays independent in many ways and continues to be more of what it already is.

Sucks to see the Whiskey sites split up like this, but this is great for both sides. Their sites get to survive and it looks like Tested just gained some cool new coworkers. I'm excited to see what both sites do now.

This is the best news to come out of this.

I loved Giantbomb, until their newest dude joined, and I don't mean any offense to him, because I know he posts on here, but he just wasn't my cup of tea, but still I think it's a shame that this shit is just going to repeat.

Giantbomb isn't a feasible a long term business. People don't go there for the latest information or news about games, they go for the personalities. They go for Jeff, Ryan, Vinny, Brad, and Dave. It's not a gaming site really, it's a site where you can watch people you like make fun of and talk about games.

As others have said, if it does bad, CBS will cut their losses, and just take any staff and merge it with Gamespot. Even though I wasn't a fan all the way through, I admired what they were doing, being a small company that didn't have to obey the mother-ship's rules. I'm curious to see how long they can keep it feeling the same, and how long until it gets injected with too many personalties for people not to care anymore.

A Pretty Panda

fuckin' called it, man
Oh ok. So Whiskey Media isn't dead?

From Dave's subscriber FAQ it sounds like GiantBomb and Comic Vine are going to be a part of CBS's stuff while Whiskey will be Tested, Screened, and Anime Vice will be Whiskey Media but under new owners. Also there will be new sites apparently.

Dude, because I have been watching what happens to big videogame media sites for the better part of two decades. I know where this leads.

I would watch the video but Jeff and co have apparently become so egotistical that they want me to watch 10 minutes of them eating pancakes before they ever say anything substantial. I wish I were joking. It's fucking absurd.

According to Dave, those who continue with their Whiskey Media premium subscriptions (which will now be Giant Bomb subscriptions) will receive free access to GameSpot's Total Access stuff.

I still feel like some people in this thread are not fully understanding. I recommend you watch the video they put up on Giant Bomb of the live stream that happened in Dave's house earlier today.

GameSpot and Giant Bomb will still be two different websites. GameSpot will be able to help Giant Bomb if they want to (it sounded like getting review copies for games if they wanted them). It seems to me now that they are part of a large company they are able to do more of the crazy things they've always wanted to do, but never had the money to do. Sounds awesome to me. They have total creative freedom and don't have to go by CBS rules such as "you have to review games with a 20 point system" or something.

Just posting this because it seems that without watching that video, you just won't understand. At least that's what happened with me.

Anyway we wont know exactly what the hell is happening until later.

Also that Tested news is incredible. I'll miss having Giant Bomb and Tested being as close as they were though. Kind of drifted away from Screened over the last six months so what happens to them isn't bothering me too much.

So you would rather them announce it like other sites would in just a news article?

Those sites were in the shitter or ran by arseholes. I believe Giant Bomb is the exception.

Info starts about a minute or two in. Just watch it. If you don't feel Jeff's enthusiasm, you're on the wrong site, because it's basically built around people trusting him and the others when it comes to shit like this.

You replace "Giant Bomb" with "1up" and and Gamespot with "IGN" and you have the same bullshit marketing we heard 2 years ago. We know where that lead.

I can't believe so many people are so naive just because Jeff told them otherwise while pancakes. I am 15 minutes in to this video. he has provided NO evidence that this was fiscally necessary. Do you guys just automatically trust them without any proof at all? Especially seemingly out of the blue when no business problems were mentioned previously and they have been hiring and employees have been buying houses in the nice suburbs?

And Jeff's reasoning is totally schizophrenic. He implied, but never said directly, that they couldn't keep going by saying "members have kept them going" (why couldn't this just continue) on the other hand he delviers an argument that this is about "getting bigger" and expanding. I personally don't need Giant Bomb to get better. Watching 10 minutes of pancake eating tells me that their egos are getting big enough.

It pains me to say that too because GB has been my favorite website for years now. It is the only one I have ever donated money to.

I don't think Whiskey was in as desperate straits as 1Up was when that happened. From the departures preceding that sale, it sounded like it was a matter of weeks, if not days, before 1Up was going to shut down if it wasn't acquired.

I think GB could have gone for at least another year. Screened and Tested might not have survived that long, though.

Bring back Greg Kasavin and Rich Gallup and Ill return. :D

Kasavin got that Bastion money.

What? They started doing premium memberships and were going to break up the BOMBCAST, the main feature of the site. And Vinny bought an apartment or townhouse in the suburbs.

It's the first time you see a gaming website being bought by another company, isn't it?

It's always about new opportunities, greater potential, more money available, complete freedom... Again: I'm not saying that everything's going down the drain but there's absolutely no reason to believe this would be any different than any other site being bought by another (bigger) one.

Man, these pancakes really bother you, do they.

It still seems like we'll be getting the same Giant Bomb but they'll have more money to do crazier things? What's wrong with that? If they stayed with Whiskey Media they would end up with no money. Anyway they need some new video editors so they can push out more amazing video content.

And then they got a bunch of member support. And that was several years ago. Nothing else was said about it, then this.

The bottom line for me is that I don't want Giant Bomb to get bigger and expand. I like this core small group and I like what they did. The only reason I would care about them expanding is if I was an investor and looking at it from a financial perspective. I am not, I am a fan that thought I was just donating to prevent them from having to become a big company focused on always growing revenue.

It turns out they just want to use my donation to follow that tired, shallow business model.

I'm amazed that so many people are optimistic about the purchase of a small company they like by a large corporate competitor. These things always start with this kind of happy talk and almost always end badly.

As long as Kessler gets left behind, I'm okay with this.

I totally disagree. The status of the interns has been my number one question throughout this, and I really want the classic Internal Affairs crew around.

Kessler's a cool guy who can lead a raid like nobody's business! I want him to come back!

I could see the Tested guys getting their own show on the Discovery Channel. Written by Garry Whitta and Directed by M. Night.

Yeah, it's really strange because the crew's whole mantra has been about having a small, but intense focus. I swear that I remember Jeff saying that he didn't think GB would benefit from getting bigger.

HOW DARE THEY USE MY HARD EARNED MONEY TO BUY PANCAKES TO MAKE AN ANNOUNCEMENT I DON'T LIKE!

*sob sob*

If this is the only way for giantbomb to survive, so be it. But I don't think it'll ever be quite the same :/.
