First Halo 4 GI information (Spartan OPs, multi, etc) [Update: Campaign/More Details]

But Reach looks way better than 3 anyway, has a higher resolution, and removes the double framebuffer lighting thing, etc, so it makes no sense. Also:
Even the MP footage in the first vidoc looks very related to Reach.

It seems unlikely they'd toss the improvements in Reach away and start over somehow. My strong guess is they are building on Reach engine unless somebody from 343i specifically says they arent which i doubt will ever happen.

Because they started development in 2008? Reach engine is overhauled Halo 3 engine (which is overhauled Halo 2 engine). So in time Reach development started, H4 was already in pre production. They got all engines because thats MS property, but Halo 3 is base.

That doesn't mean they can't incorporate the upgrades in Reach.

AFAIK there's only one Halo engine. Same engine through 3, Reach, and now on to 4, improved all the while.

So it's direct predecessor should be Reach.

Also 3 used some weirdass double framebuffer HDR lighting system that really was cutting off the nose to spite the face imo. It looked harsh anyway, and sapped a ton of performance. 3 also was the most sub HD of the bunch. Reach closer to 720, now 4 is 720p.

I'm inclined not to believe you without a link. Even the MP footage in the first vidoc looks very related to Reach. And even if Frankie sad that, it doesn't actually go against what I said above and I'm sure he didn't mean it that way, since in a sense both Reach and 4 would have their roots in 3.
Think of it similarly to IW and Treyarch situation. IW made updated Id Tech engine for COD4, they gave code to Treyarch, they built on that and they made Black Ops which looks very different from MW2 for example. Only in this case 343i made much better job than Bungie...

I'm a layman so am happy to be proven wrong, but isn't what you're talking about what makes Source so unique?

It's modular structure, so that individual parts can be heavily modified without fucking up other bits of the engine.

Pretty much all engines are made that way. Apparently Source is one of the less friendly engines to use from what I heard.

Composers taking Halo 4's music "to another level"
Neil Davidge and Matt Dunkley on why they're moving on from Bungie's iconic themes and chants.

The team working on the music for 343 Industries' upcoming Halo 4 have confirmed that they are moving on from the series' iconic themes and Gregorian chants. They insist, however, that they have nothing but the highest regard for Bungie composer Marty O'Donnell's work.

With the series out of Bungie's hands, and development passed to 343 Industries, it's clear that Halo 4 will be something of a departure from the established series template. That's certainly the case for its soundtrack; Neil Davidge, a former member of Bristol-based trip-hop outfit Massive Attack, is composing the game's music.

Both he and right-hand man Matt Dunkley believe it is time for the series to move on - meaning O'Donnell's iconic compositions are being left behind. In an interview, Dunkley, an orchestrator and arranger whose CV features the likes of Inception, Batman: The Dark Knight and Iron Man, tells us that Microsoft and 343 made a conscious decision to move on, but insists that should not be interepreted as disrespect or distate for the Bungie composer's work.

"We respect absolutely what [O'Donnell] did, and obviously these iconic themes are very close to gamers' hearts," he tells us. "So we all listened to what he'd done, and I think you'll always be on a hiding to nothing if you're trying to pastiche that. Instead, we wanted to take that to another level.

"Hopefully the Halo fans will see that we're being respectful," he says, "but we've also taken it somewhere else, and maybe onto a higher plane. If you're always trying to reference back, you're not creating new things."

Davidge only began working with Massive Attack in 1996, and as such wasn't involved in their laid-back, melodic early work. Instead, his first full-length project with the group was their third album, Mezzanine, which steered their sound in a markedly darker direction. He's worked in film, too, scoring Clash Of The Titans for Warner Bros - but what can he bring to the Halo series? During a visit to his Bristol studio, he tells us of his love of the series, and the recognition that taking on O'Donnell's work head-on would be a mistake.

"Personally, I've loved those games and I've spent a lot of time with them, and gone through each several times," he says. "I enjoy them. They can't be bettered, as far as I'm concerned. I didn't sign on to this to improve on what Bungie and Marty have done, but just to take it somewhere else.

"It's a new journey, it's a new story, it's a new arc, and so I feel like my job is not to revolutionise or reinvent but to continue the evolution, and I have a slightly different voice to those guys.

"I have fresh energy to bring to a project like this. And everybody at 343 has the same intense passion that I have to contunue the story. The passion of the people that are involved in this project makes you want to do your very best. And then go beyond that."

If you told me this game was Metroid Prime 4 I'd almost believe it. Drastically different art direction for the indoor stuff compared to the first 4 games.

Its says wrong. Frankie said they took Halo 3 engine and totally rebuild it. Anniversary is made on Reach engine.

If I recall correctly, Frankie said that Reach was using a heavily modified Halo 3 engine and that Halo 4 uses a heavily modified Reach engine. He said we wouldn't be able to recognize it and he was right.

Not true. Anniversary was built using an engine Saber Interactive created specifically for the task.

Yes, although the multiplayer portion obviously uses the Reach engine.

I've just seen the pics. Oh my god, that's amazing, I mean, AMAZING. If the final version of the game looks this good...well, I just really don't know what to say besides of "AMAZING". I might be in shock or something.

Recently caught up to all this new information. Is it just me or does it seem like 343 is just ramming in all of today's gaming fads into Halo 4?

Edit: And this UNSC Infinity bullshit is lame. It kind of takes away from the mystique of the multiplayer maps if you're told that everything is just holographic imagery in one room.

You are basically playing in a holographic imagery hence VIDEO GAME DUR HERP

Thanks for the link! Anyone notice the FXAA going on on the background screens of Halo 4 in that interview?

Also, i'm thinking that blond girl with the mo cap dots on her face is probably doing Cortana facial motion capture. Given just how expressive Cortana's face looks in the GI shots, perhaps we are seeing a new high water mark in facial expression. After the amount of talent we have seen so far in 343, I def wouldn't put it past them.

I really wish people caught themselves speaking low. Speak clearly when doing videos like this. When someone "fades" their voice away it just screams unprofessional.

And I know this all sounds like splitting atoms but I really wish they wouldn't mention creating a studio from scratch. It just sounds like a bunch of fans making unofficial games over the Internet. And I know it's probably just me who thinks that but it's how it sounds. :/

Somehow I think there will be more to it than that, especially if the game delves into John's origins as well as the Spartan IVs. That's my hope anyhow.

As far as mystique goes, I never saw it. Halo's competitive maps had about as much mystique as a random episode of RvB. It was purposefully non-sensical. Different strokes I guess.

Best looking game of the gen if those screens hold up in reality.

Maybe one of the best or up there with the best, but the best? I just don't see that happening, with any game, including Halo 4.

Now my jaw didn't hit the floor but I am extremely impressed. I think Halo can finally be safely mentioned with the best looking games on consoles. The art direction seems to have matured as well as enemies and allies no longer have that previous Halo trademark cartoon like look. Jesus I really wanna see Metroid Prime running on current gen hardware now. Please Resistance don't go my sci-fi fantasies can't die with you

Agreed, Kenneth Scott's influence can be easily seen IMO.

Need to see human characters to judge the graphics.

Cortana should be close enough to get an idea. From what we have seen, it looks like 343 has better modelers, at least with humans. The detail on cortana's model is pretty impressive.

I think you guys are paying too much attention to the iteration of the engine when I would think Bungie and now 343i see it as the Blam! engine overall. There really no reason Halo 4 couldn't be started off of the Halo 3 version of this engine and worked on from there. Another option would be for 343i and Bungie to have close collaboration over the development of the engine, so that 343 would be up to speed when it's time to implement or test assets or techniques.

I find it hard to believe they took the Reach engine at the end of 2010 and just built on from that. Sounds like that would be a huge waste of time for the studio if they have been working on it for the last 3+ years.

We'll see how this all works, but while I'm still wary of an "Upgraded" spartan in multiplayer, the idea of an Upgraded spartan taking on co-op missions gets me all hot and botherd. Kind of like Mass Effect 3 with less OMG grind repetition. I think the connection between Spartan ops and "Holo training" is most interesting to me.

I'd still prefer a plotline involving seperate UNSC and or ONI spartan forces duking it out over something though, I think that might have more interesting effects on the singleplayer.

The make or break question to me is - can people join games in progress. If not, this is the first halo I will not buy. Completely fed up with the constant 5 vs 1 games.

Not sure why people respond so negatively to the OP. The info in it seems fine to me. And firefight turned the single player of Reach into a "a goody, another firefight map after mah corridor", so I'm not that shaken up to see it gone.

Also: it was more fun in ODST than in Reach for some reason. Reach was kind of lame in general, actually.

The Infinity stuff sounds like a sure set-up for Halo past 4 or even the new trilogy. Basically: the opportunity to create a Halo by subscription model at some point. Might prevent servers from being shut down in the future.

Fxaa is terrible. It´s a cheap anti aliasing solution that makes the picture blurry/soft.

It doesn't have to blur the screen, the higher quality FXAA, the better the results. The art direction can also make a difference and Halo's art works well with the technique. Halo CEA is easily the cleanest Halo game and there is nothing blurry about the screen.

I thought MLAA is the one that makes everything blurry? FXAA in Gears 3 was nice.

Any PPAA can blur the screen since most of them are nothing more than an intelligent blur. Typically though, MLAA does not blur the screen.

Also, Gears 3 didn't have FXAA, it didn't have any AA actually ;)

FXAA has come a long long way...FXAA 4.0 is superb. ME3 uses one of the newest, so does ACR and they look pretty damn good.

ACR uses their own custom PPAA IIRC, not FXAA.
