Maybe Battleship bombing will convince people to not let Rihanna be in their movies. We all know the truth is nobody went to watch it because they were afraid of her giant forehead crashing through the screen and crushing the audience.

I wouldn't be surprised if Rihanna is the reason it made money at all lol

When asked about his studio's performance, President of Universal Studios, Ron Meyer explained it succinctly. "We make a lot of shitty movies." Meyer spoke at the Savannah Film Festival in a brutally honest speech, opening up about Universal's recent and frequent disappointments.

Awards contenders and critically-lauded films are, unfortunately, not his top priority.

"[A critical hit is] great when it happens. But we did A Beautiful Mind, and I don't know that we'd do A Beautiful Mind again. That's the sad part. It's great to win awards and make films that you're proud of and make money, but your first obligation is to make money and then worry about being proud of what you do."

Tyler Kitsch got two studios to spend $400+ million combined on films with him in the starring role after no history of film success. Talk about Hollywood trying to manufacture a star.

Small budget? BOM says 65 million.. that's not huge, but with marketing, it's not really small budget

well, 65 million is a low budget compared to your typical 100+ million blockbuster comedy. Compared to Dark Shadows, it's practically an indie flick.

still, Dictator made 1/3 of that back opening weekend- i think Baron Cohen has decent international appeal (at least in the EU) so it will probably break even WW with decent DVD/Blu-Ray sales. Good critical reception will probably help.

Is he even in the starring role? If not for these box office threads, I'd never even know he was in it. The "star" of Battleship was "Stuff Exploding!"

It would have made more if Rihanna and Brooklyn Decker kissed for two hours.

It's an accidental victory.

They will still watch the next TRANSFORMERS.

It'll likely come in second place with MiB3 coming out. That's why I had to laugh at BOG claiming that Battleship could be carried into Memorial Day Weekend with MiB3's release and the continued demand for Avengers; the world has spoken and we don't want Battleship.

BattleBomba.

Marvel's The Avengers

Total Lifetime Grosses
Domestic: $457,078,000 38.7%
+ Foreign: $723,300,000 61.3%
= Worldwide: $1,180,378,000

Great job, Whedon.

Dark Shadows

Total Lifetime Grosses
Domestic: $50,908,000 58.1%
+ Foreign: $36,700,000 41.9%
= Worldwide: $87,608,000

I can´t believe that Johnny Depp is bombing both domestic and internationally. The budget for Dark Shadows is $150 million.

Hahahaha 25m OW for Battleship, massive massive bomb, it might even top John Carter as the biggest bomb of the year! Still can't believe Universal decided it was a good idea to have their biggest production ever be about an old board game with zero character (and putting no big stars in it, and having a director that only made films that bombed)

Oh and the overseas gross for Battleship is pretty awful for a supposed "event" movie.

well, 65 million is a low budget compared to your typical 100+ million blockbuster comedy. Compared to Dark Shadows, it's practically an indie flick.

Relative to R-rated Comedies it's a pretty big budget though, it's not like Bruno was a massive hit.

Dark Shadows is bombing so far, we're still missing overseas numbers for this week though. The film has pretty mediocre WoM so I don't expect very good legs...

$65M is not a small budget for a comedy. Maybe compared to an Adam Sandler flick or Dark Shadows where Depp is getting $20M+, but almost all of the Apatow family of films have cost one third to one half of that, and those films usually make money. Bruno did ok overseas, so international grosses might cushion the blow of the disappointing domestic opening. However, I don't think the Dictator will be making money in its theatrical release.

Why on earth was "Dictator" R-rated? Bruno is an abomination.

Didn't Battleship already make budget with overseas numbers? This should be mostly profit right?

No, because

1.) Overseas markets take a much larger chunk of the box office than domestic theatres do.

2.) Marketing costs aren't accounted for in the 210 million budget, and Battleship had a ridiculous marketing campaign.

Really hope he tries something more normal. Shock/racist comedy is kinda passé

I would say Liam Neeson has some pull as an actor and Berg directed Hancock which was a big WW hit.

No. It needs about $300-350M more worldwide to be considered a success with the budget it had.

Liam Neeson is the perfect lead for a $25-40M film, but he can't get people interested in a $200M summer flick. He's been in a lot of movies that have bombed.

Forgot about Hancock but its success was because of Will Smith, not Berg (and apparently the production of that movie was a mess...)

Liam Neeson has some pull but he's not in a starring role and he wasn't really heavily featured in the marketing iirc.

Is it me or these threads are more fun than NPD threads now? :p
NPD is the most interesting right now with the massive slump the videogame market is suffering from. Box office is usually more consistent and predictable, but mega hits like Avengers and bombs like Battleship are fun to watch.

neeson is barely in the film, and wasn't marketed as the "star" of the film. NO ONE was, except maybe Rhianna, and she's not exactly a box office draw.

As for Berg, your average moviegoer has no idea who he is, and it wasn't marketed as "from the director of hancock" but "from the people who bought you Transformers" which is as much a negative as a positive. The transformers films are widely regarded even among fans as absolutely awful.

The property (and stuff blowing up) were supposed to be the draw with Battleship- and it didn't exactly work out well.

Battleship tanked because you all pirated the movie beforehand. :(

it won't be long before someone tries to make this argument.

NPD gives us like 10 numbers total between software and hardware now (if we are lucky). Half of last month's thread was people guessing at what the Vita numbers were from the vague hints of posters who knew but couldn't say outright.

With box office numbers, everyone can see them. Everyone can track day to day grosses, and look at trends. It's much more interesting from a numbers perspective.

It's funny how they wasted the "value" of BATTLESHIP as a brand. Why license a property if you are going to spend that much money?

I just don't understand why they licensed it at all? Im not sure they couldn't have made the exact same film they made without the license....

I'm not trying to defend the film but pointing out Alrus's oversights in his post. Berg has one hit and Neeson is not a nobody. I have not seen the film so I have not clue how much screen time he got. I agree that Berg is not a known director but that does not takeaway the fact that he has a hit.

Statistics and the increase in box office intake with each subsequent movie say otherwise. Don't confuse critics with the average joe.

That doesn't make sense. So what happens when you make something you're not proud of AND don't make money?

Or license the property and make some sort of lower-budget comedy with it. Maybe something stylized and Cold War.

As it is, the whole point of licensing (built-in audience to help keep down expense) seems to have been lost on the producers.

So they could connect it to Transformers in some way for the trailers/ads?

And how's that working out for them?

I agree. If I were to use that brand, I would have made it a space battle of some kind and at least tried to show a little character building.

Universal's "Battleship" couldn't break up "The Avengers" as the debut pic drifted into Stateside ports with a $25.3 million weekend estimate.

"Avengers" scored its third consecutive domestic win, posting $55.1 million. With an estimated $457.1 million domestically, added to $7.23.3 million internationally, the pic now is Disney's highest-grossing global release and the fourth-highest industrywide, totaling $1.180 billion.

The "Avengers" blockade was clearly too much for "Battleship" domestically; the pic was expected to gross between $35 million and $40 million through Sunday -- not a whole lot better than the film's estimated outcome given its $200 million-plus budget.

The Hasbro tentpole has accumulated $226.8 million in overseas grosses, but without much Stateside support, the film is in a dicey position financially.

The weekend's remaining wide openers represent safer investments: Paramount's "The Dictator," which earned $55 million worldwide this weekend, cost a reported $65 million (not including marketing), while Lionsgate's "What to Expect When You're Expecting," budgeted in the high-$30 millions, debuted to $10.5 million domestically. Lionsgate is only at risk for less than $30 million, however.

"Dictator" bowed Wednesday in the U.S., collecting $24.5 million in five days; pic grossed an estimated $30.3 million from 29 day-and-date international territories.

"The movie plays great in the Northeast and West, but soft in the South and the Midwest," said Par vice chairman Rob Moore, who added that the Sacha Baron Cohen film was affected by similar cultural sensibilities overseas based on the star's often polarizing effect with audiences. "As you drill down in the grosses, there's a big gap in those regions."

At the specialty box office, Fox Searchlight's "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" continued to play well to adult auds, grossing $3.2 million from 354 locations, up from 178 last weekend. Pic has cumed $8.2 million domestically, with close to $80 million at the overseas B.O.

Battleship should have opened near the same date for overseas and stateside. The wait, and the negative reviews that were allowed to come out clearly didn't help.

Anyways, Avengers is still doing amazing! ^^

That'd probably have the opposite effect. More likely that people came to see Rihanna than not.
