Yup, mine too lol.

I'm also convinced that the U is going to be fine with third party support when the PS4 and 720 are released. By the time those two consoles are launched the U should have an installed userbase of anywhere between 10-15m, perhaps more and - most importantly - not only have Nintendo finally ditched the TEV Unit in favour of traditional programable shaders (and avoiding the problem that the Wii had with a nonstandard rendering pipeline) but they also appear to be using a GPGPU and similar architecture to the PS4 and 720, making porting a great deal easier.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - I'm quite confident that the U will be the lead platform for next gen projects and will supply up-ports to the other two consoles. And, who knows, if Sony and Microsoft both release a console that costs a small fortune they may both suffer the same fate that the PS3 did for the first two years. Christ on a bike, there were even a few months when the GBA outsold the PS3 at the start lol. :Oo

We could end up seeing exclusives for the PS4 and 720 being canned and see development switching to the U, as we did with Monster Hunter 3 this gen.

I'm just hoping that Capcom are going to be announcing something Resident Evil related during the next few months, after playing Revelations I can see the huge advantage that a touchscreen controller will have over a traditional one. A sequel to Revelations would be bloody great, as long as they decrease the amount of ammo hanging around and make the game more difficult. Mercenaries 3D and Revelations are both the top two of my most played games.

Give me Resident Evil: More Revelations (lol) with a Genesis Scanner the same way the Scanner works in ZombiU, give me a log entry for everything I scan similar to Metroid Prime, make ammo a bit scarce and the game more difficult and I'm going to pay Capcom a small fortune for it!!!

Buggering flip, that was a long post...sorry for the novel lololol

LOL. And some think I'm optimistic. I just don't see Wii U becoming the lead platform for next gen. At the same time I'm just hoping they bother with down ports because there are people who do want to own just one console and that console ends up as Wii U because of Nintendo exclusives. I'm sure they would be happy with not having to spend another $400-$500 just for a certain few titles that have say better tessellation than the Wii U version would have.

The GBA/PS3 battle and discussion was rather hilarious from what I remember.

Haha. Both Ideaman and myself have been saying Wii U is more powerful and have given examples of how since multipliers don't really do much.

And like I pointed out, even Iwata said Wii U is only halfway to its potential.

Do you think it's at all possible that the Zelda and Bird tech demos from E3 2011 were done on Wii U 'target specs' which were never met or they were done on first generation dev kits which were later downclocked to save on costs ?.

I just cant see anything at E3 2012 on Wii U that comes anywhere close to those two jaw dropping tech demos.

Just because they haven't shown something doesn't mean it's not capable.

No problems. When there are misunderstandings we've done well to getting on the same page around here. I think we're doing the same. :)

As for IM, his contacts are probably just now getting a decent idea of what the final kits can do so maybe he'll have some new tidbits soon. I don't know that for certain, but assuming that based on how "recent" the final kits started going out. The ones I've gotten Nintendo info from have all pretty much gone into hiding, plus I've been focused on trying to get an idea of what's going on with Xbox 3.

You should have put "final" Bg, whilst the individual components were probably finalised around May Nintendo still have plenty of work to do with power, cooling and clockspeeds. We won't have developers getting hold of FINAL dev kits until a month or two before launch. There will be dev kits flying back and forth like mental between Nintendo and third parties. Major SDK revisions should be over and done with by now though. It's bloody mental working on launch titles, it's at times like this that I'm glad I'm not working in the industry any more lol.

To be fair, Nintendo didn't have anything to showcase the hardware at E3 to begin with. Pikmin 3's Wii roots are obvious. NSMB is side scrolling Mario. NintendoLand looks okay, but nothing beyond what clean visuals can accomplish on current gen systems. Third party ports are bound to console standards. ZombiU looks like a Ubisoft launch game.

For whatever reason, they didn't even bother with tech demos at E3 2012.

Yes...let's doubt the person who has actually been on point with his leaks 100% of the time and believe "anonymous developers" with quotes with their amazing verifiability. Also avatar quote.

Yeah, who cares about "anonymous developers" with actual direct experience with the hardware. Second hand info is so much more reliable!

Wait, there's details about the Wii U's hardware that's not secondhand info?

EDIT: Also, looks like snesfreak finally bit the dust. † RIP in peace †

I'm still confused here. We've had actual developers state the thing isn't "on par" with the PS3/360. I can' t believe the discussion has gone back to this.

I just found it funny you thought an anonymous poster who doesn't have direct experience with the hardware is more reliable an anonymous developer who does, that's all.

What did SNESFreak do this time?

Nintendo's history with tech demos would tell us that games that push the hardware look better than the demos. The Zelda demo used improved Gamecube assets so something designed for Wii U from the ground up should hopefully make a difference. I say hopefully based on the decision of the art style they go with. We saw two versions of the Bird demo in a few days time with the second one having improvements. And those demos were made in a short time on early hardware. And also what EC said.

Yeah but like you mentioned those are things that won't cause a change in the actual components so I don't think there is a need to use quotes in that sense.

Well we've actually gotten confirmed information out of this anonymous poster as opposed to the pretty much discredited "on par" comments from anonymous developers.

I just can't see the sense in developers not using the lowest powered console as the lead if a title is going to be on the U, PS4, 720 and PC. Otherwise if they use any of the other platforms as the lead you may find the U being unable to run a game without serious framerate issues for example due to it not having enough grunt. That's why the PS2 and 360 have been most commonly the lead platforms these last two gens, although the PS3's memory allocation and deallocation has put a bit of a spanner in the works this gen.

Jaw dropping is too much for those tech demos.

I thought they were stunning but maybe im just easily impressed lol.

They might well be possible on PS360 but i actually thought, ok now this is next gen if only a half step up, the games i saw Nintendo show at E3 2012 looked more like Wii games running on Dolphin with a few graphical effects added.

Nintendo really should have had a trailer that shows what the console can do instead of what was shown imo.

Ah well we will just have to wait until the Aug / Sept events and hope they show something spectacular off but if they didnt do it at E3 when the world was watching i doubt we will see anything new or exciting at a Nintendo Direct.

Most prob more info on the online, OS, price and release date.

I think we will have to wait for E3 2013 to see things like Mario EAD, Zelda, Metroid and Smash Bros ect with two of them arriving in late 2013.

So, snesfreak got banned over what? Did I miss something?

Then again, I can't believe the sheer amount of damage I (almost) managed to incur today with approx. 50mil of beer.

There were nothing shown from Nintendo or 3rd parties that is building ground up for WiiU that is a graphical show case game, only ports, or games like NSMBU and Nintendoland that are not games meant to push graphics. Even ZombiU started as a 360 game Killer Rabbids.

Wait til we see games thats coming Fall 2013 to start seeing games for WiiU looking a lot better then current gen.

Those two tech demos aren't possible on the PS3 and 360 hardware in real-time. The lighting, shadows and reflections were outstanding in the Zelda demo.

Is this your opinion?, Or are there some factual evidence that make those two demos impossible on the hd twins? Because I saw nothing in that 30fps, 720p no AA Zelda demo that couldn't be possible on the ps3/360

I was just reading a thread on another site where some folks said the Wii U has no ethernet port. Is this true? I really hate wireless gaming, it's just not acceptable to me.

^ True so far. But I don't expect that to change. They'll probably sell the USB adapter for that.

Apparently something to do with the off Gaf IRC chat.

Wait, what?

Sounds like that 40mil may have been the cause of that mental error. ;)

Well there's a difference between possible and actual. But I'm not familiar with PS360 games enough to know of any true examples that are comparable. A long time ago I had looked at some Uncharted 3 vids, but I saw no stages that could give a proper comparison.

It's my opinion, feel free to point out a PS3 or 360 title that has lighting, shadows and reflections that good in real-time. The two hyphenated words at the end of that sentence are particularly important, no pre-baking. Simply can't be done. People seem to forget that the GPUs in both the PS3 and 360 aren't that impressive these days. The GPU in the U is at least two generations ahead of them and you've got at least twice as much RAM in those early dev kits.

This.

I'd describe the bird demo as classy and beautiful. That was being rendered on both screens as well.

I think the last few comments go to prove just how small the gap between graphics are now; imagine how much more indistinguishable they'll be to the majority share average consumer.

For me, I think the WiiU will be enough - not just and not in excess - but perfectly enough.

My only concern at this point is if the architecture is enough to receive ports without is being costly or time consuming to developers.

I severely doubt we'll see anything looking like that Square tech demo on consoles anytime within the next 10 years. UE4 demo looked a bit more achievable, but totally underwhelming judged against fanboy expectations for the coming generation.

The Wii features no Ethernet port either, but there's a LAN adapter available (which connects via USB). I use that and it works really well.

The spec sheet states that this is also the case with Wii U:

Wii U can access the Internet via wireless (IEEE 802.11b/g/n) connection. The
console features four USB 2.0 connectors – two in the front and two in the rear – that
support Wii LAN Adapters.
But yeah, an Ethernet port would be convenient.

Yeah, the Wii doesn't have an ethernet port, but I also don't use my Wii for online gaming (for many reasons). I'm a multi-system owner for that reason. I am hoping to be a single-system owner next generation. We'll see what the future holds.

The Wii U's development progression does seem to be a bit weird though. Going by the latest gossip and statements thrown out there, the CPU in the 3rd dev kits and beyond may be very different from the one that was in very early development kits (which was rumored to be an overclocked Xenon). Is it relatively safe to assume that the final dev kit will be as strong or stronger than whatever was in the first kits?

Tech demo. Single room. Relatively simple geometry. No AI or computer game code to run. No sound. Yeah, that could be done with PS360.

I still think it looked great. Much better then anything they showed at E3 2012.

I used to love the wireless on the Wii until my AOSS compatible router died on me a few years ago. It was fantastic, got a replacement from the same manufacturer but it isn't compatible and the range is nowhere near as good. Used to get a signal about a hundred yards away from my flat lol. Shame Buffalo stopped making it because it was a beast. :Oo

I'd like to say The Last Guardian would be the closest out of any game, but we won't know until more videos are released. Also was the trailer for it pre-rendered? I can't remember. But otherwise yeah I agree that any other soon-to-be last-gen game cannot run such effects.

Could have sworn I already read or heard the USB LAN will work with WiiU.. maybe in the investor questionnaire before last. There are also some generic adapters which work with the Wii for extra cost cutting.

Not in real-time mate, on one screen let alone two. Everything this gen is pre-baked these days.

I think the most graphically and technically astounding game of this generation was God of War 3 on PS3.

Remember someone posted a gif of Kratos running out onto a balcony with lightning and tornados in the far off distance in one of the old WUST's.

There are prob several technical tricks they are doing but it looks amazing imo and the closest i have seen to that Zelda tech demo.

The new God of War shown at E3 looked even more impressive.

Sorry to see snesfreak get perma'd. I have been following WUST since last year and it seems for every member that gets banned, three jr's show up in their place.

Btw, how does "Pre-baking" effects affect performance vs having it in hardware?

Should be, launch software is always cautious when it comes to using what's there at first, but you can't really go back with the target they were going for; it'll just work against them.

Now, it can be slightly different, like said before, should be better in dhrystones/general purpose calculations, perhaps a little worse when it comes to floating point operations/whetstones. That said, general purpose performance was something the current gen consoles were really lacking at; so having good general purpose performance for a little less whetstones might not be necessarily seen as a downgrade, more like a trade-off.

See, the decisions leading to CELL and Xenon of enlarging the pipeline stages from 17 to 32 or so, worked like they did for Pentium 4/netburst architecture, they allowed better clocks at the price of less general purpose performance per clock, because the lenght of the pipeline was bigger, because there wasn't cache miss prediction for it and bottlenecks like that, they also simplified the core's for keeping up with the speed they were aiming for, further degrading the performance. In short, these were floating point beasts, that took a beating day one from any "normal" gpu out there in regular tasks.

Nintendo's approach should be more down to earth/balanced, so the CPU Gflop rating might be hampered a bit (for good reasons).

Iwata said it couldn't be done on the PS3/360

"Regarding Zelda HD, Japanese developers said that it could not be replicated on other machines. It was made in a relatively short period, so Iwata feels that HD development will not be a problem."

The only real time aspect of that demo was the camera angle. Everything else was scripted.
Cryengine 3 could easily do thing this on current console. With deferred lighting, shadows and global illumination in realtime. Not a problem.
