I feel like we should ban Kotaku because NeoGAF can't handle hearing rumors.

In that last thread Kotaku's word was treated with an absurd amount of credibility.
It was a plausible one, though. This goes on Kotaku's record and people will remember it the next time they'll post a rumour, so all is well.

I think IGN made the bigger boo-boo by basically re-reporting it as if the cancellation were fact instead of a rumour.

As I said in the other thread, I'm looking forward to a blowout at TGS (and hopefully a release date).

Despite it was a Kotaku rumour and didn't take it too seriously, the fact is that if it was canned, it wouldn't have been a surprise.

I'm really glad this goes on, but the lack of info is killing me.

That's assuming it gets a blowout at TGS. Instead you'll get FF13-3 introduced during the Sept. 1 Lightning Saga presentation and then you'll get nothing but FF13-3 at TGS.

Fun stuff.

I'd really like to know what happened with this project. How has it taken so long? Just so many questions.

At this point I would say its a next gen game.

If you'd told me 4 years ago that FF13 would be good enough to get two direct sequels, I'd be off my face amazed. Hearing it in the present day is even more jaw dropping.

You guys need to get over yourselves.
Do people never post rumours on GAF?
Do people not love discussing the rumours that Kotaku posts?
Do people not appreciate that they actually got some fucking news out of Wada on the subject?
Your behaviour is pathetic... ban Kotaku? Ban yourselves for talking about it, then.
Thank you. Such spoiled sports in this thread seriously.

It's "not canceled" in the same way that Duke Nukem Forever technically wasn't canceled. It's still not happening. At least not any time this decade, and not from Square Enix, and probably not even with the Final Fantasy brand name.

What I'm saying is Gearbox will put out Sleeping Etro sometime in 2020 and it'll use some of the art assets that were in the first Versus 13 trailer from six years ago.

Not to defend Kotaku, but at least their article stated it was just a rumour. Whereas plenty of other sites simply reposted it under the heading "Report - Versus Cancelled".

There needs to be some standards of verification/attribution in the enthusiast press, otherwise its just gossip.

If Versus doesn't have a substantial showing at TGS (and no, I don't mean a CG trailer behind closed doors), it goes straight back to vapourware status and we'll get new cancellation/being retooled for next generation rumours, regardless of what Wada tweets.

There's not much time left in the generation to release a relevant game, to be honest. You don't want to compete with the first wave of next generation games. FFXII cut it close before the release of the PS3, but that window is closing fast for Versus.

Dragon Quest 7 was released several months after the PS2 was available and still want on to become the best selling PSone game in Japan. At the end of the day this is Final Fantasy, it's going to sell on that alone. And if it's as good as many of us are hoping, then it's going to sell very well regardless of whether it's released before or after the PS4.

There is no way this is Playstation exclusive, Sony cant afford it no more. When we hear from it again expect it to be multi platform and next gen.

I think those are different cases. Mainline Dragon Quest is bigger in Japan than mainline Final Fantasy and Versus isn't even that, it's a spinoff.

And surely you agree that it would be more desirable for S-E to release Versus before the next generation starts, rather than after?

edit: vv - that's exactly what I'm hoping/thinking.

I'm guessing this is shown at TGS with a substantial amount of coverage and another long trailer , prepped for release in the first half of 2013 maybe march. It sounds like crunch time going by that tweet, and I think they'll want to get both this and xiii-3 out before ps4 launches in late 2013/ early 2014.

Surely if Sony had to pay for this to be a PS exclusive such a payment would have already have been paid and received some time ago...,

I'm 100% sure it was just a fake rumour made up by Kotaku themselves in order to generate hits.
And they will do it again since this really works for them.

It wouldn't be a bad idea after all this time to go PS3/360/Wii U. Fuck, put PC in there just for shits and giggles.

Of course, but I just don't think that it would be a big blow to the game if it doesn't release before then. I honestly don't think that it'll release before the 2013 holiday season (which is when the PS4 and next Xbox should hit). That's largely because there are lots of signs that Square is going to do a FFXIII-3, and that would likely end up coming out in the early-mid part of 2013. So, that would only leave the holiday slot open for Versus since they wouldn't want to release the games too close together.

It would be utterly insane if they released this only on the PS3.

Pretty much every Japanese developer who released end-of-year figures was making more on PS3 sales than any other console platform. Sony are still very strong outside the 360 dominated NA and UK markets.

Also, if you think releasing a platform-exclusive on a machine with a 60m+ install-base is economically unviable, just think about what you're looking at on a new platform.

nice for the confirmation, but that twitter post sounds trollish.

If I didn't know, i'd imagine that was a parody account.

Meeting about towns? wtf?

JAPAN.

This may end up as an exclusive by default simply down to the way it has supposedly been designed and optimised to take advantage of bluray streaming and the tech inside ps3 from day 1. That and the decision to turn a lot of the in engine videos into CGI scenes which doesn't seem like a wise choice if your planning to port to a console with limited capacity and a horrible track record for handling such data - compressed to hell and back.

Do you realize how large a website Kotaku is and how many people visit it? They really do not have to do this at all. It's just not a realistic expectation. Only people who have a complete lack of knowledge about this shit say things like this. They have a regular, solid, returning user base. All they have to do is retain it to keep their jobs, and they can do that by treading water. They don't need to fake stories. Not anymore. Not for many years.

They posted it because they believed; They were wrong. They played the game, they lost. That's how it works. It happens the other way, too - for instance, I knew about FF14 being at Sony's presser back when it was announced a few weeks in advance of E3 but I chose to sit on it because the source asked me to. They were a valuable source, I didn't want to piss them off, so I sat on it. I made one tiny hint - an hour before Sony's presser, from my phone, I posted "Watch out for Square Enix's New MMO!" on the Penny Arcade forums - but other than that I kept quiet. Weeks later they left Square Enix! Typical. Years ago, I posted a rumour that FF4: The After Years was coming to Nintendo Download services. My source was 100% sure it was WiiWare, and was 70% on DSi. I bit the bullet, took the chance, and wrote that it was coming to both. When it was announced 2 months later, I was lauded for being half right and called useless for being half-wrong.

More recently, Kagari and I knew about FF7 PC's rerelease for a full year before reporting it - We found out Square Europe was trying to get it working in 2010, reported it in 2011 and then it was announced last month - because we had circumstances with the source that held us back. Every day I worried someone else would upend that story and pull the carpet from under us with a source of their own, but we stayed steady and held firm on waiting for more information. We knew about FF3 PSP about a month in advance but didn't make a story out of it because we simply weren't sure it was true, even though the source was tried and tested. We sat on it, and when it happened - I remember we were sitting in our E3 hotel room writing when the news came out of Japan - we slapped ourselves, obviously.

Sometimes you get it right and win, sometimes you get it wrong and don't. That goes for if you do or don't post.

I, and by extension her, tend to err on the side of caution with these things. I'd rather miss a big correct story than get a big one wrong. But maybe that holds us back, because as they say fortune favours the brave. Kotaku was brave with this story and source, and they got burned.

Do I think there's probably still some grain of truth to the story? Yes. These things don't come from nowhere. Perhaps Versus had a close call (As Bearers did), perhaps it's significantly changed form or perhaps Chinese whispers turned the dev team being told "you have to shape up and ship this fucking game" - which I'm believing has happened - into "it's been cancelled". Time will tell.

My opinion on Versus remains the same, mind - It's ridiculously over-time and over-budget, and is now launching so late the next gen will either have started or be within months of starting when it launches. It's single platform, but the PS3 simply doesn't have the market stranglehold that PS2 or PS1 had when FF9 and FF12, previous late-comers, launched. I hope the game is great, but even if it is I question its ability to perform particularly well sales wise and make back some of the ridiculous budget spend. It feels like it has the potential to be Nomura's TSW moment, though obviously nowhere near as egregious in any way.

I'll await the whole "It's coming to 360 as well. However since SE decided to put the game on 360, it's what cause all the delays" talk.

There's this odd idea that Kotaku is somehow desperate for hits. Kotaku is ranked 2,248 on Alexa. Think about that. Let it really sink in.

If you don't like them, don't visit; they'll be fine I'm sure. But cut this "Made it up for hits!!" garbage. Kotaku hasn't been at a point where they'd need to do that in years.

If there is ever a supposed exclusive that would become multi platform, this is the most likely. Considering how long it has been in production along with the dropping sales of FF13/-2, it wouldn't surprise me in the least.

Sales of the series on the 360 have been very mediocre. I also wouldn't be surprised if a good chunk of those who bought it on 360 also have PS3s, so keeping it exclusive wouldn't really hurt. In Japan it really doesn't matter as 360 is already dead there.

Why do you think it's crunch time?

It's baffling to me that people think somehow 'having regular meetings' translates into 'Dec 2012 release OMFG' or 'early 2013 release'. If you're developing properly, you're having regular meetings pretty much the entire time.

That's the thing though. At a certain point it became very clear weren't developing properly until quite a while after the game was announced. Possibly not until very, very recently.

I suppose that's true, although you have to think about the development duration on this game at this point in time. The lifespan of the current consoles to realistically sell a game to a wide audience which is maybe 18-24 months at this point in time. Add to that the reworking of SE studios and their pledge to put a new game together every 2 years. It's more piecing things together on my part and reading into the information.... or wishful thinking maybe :)
