Any and all of you who have been waiting 24+ hours for the code, couldn't you have just easily downloaded a .torrent version of it by now (as mescaline said)? If you can't wait to the point where you'd be willing to buy what you're already entitled to, I don't see why you wouldn't go that route tbh. It's all the same.

I think this is the best OSX update Apple has done in a long, long time. Agree/disagree?

In terms of stability, I agree 100%. Though I'm not sure how many potentially breaking under the hood changes the OS contains. What's unfortunate is that it seems like we have to wait for iOS 6 almost to get the other half.

Going on 25 hours waiting for my code. Really tempted to just pay the $20, but it's the principle of the thing, damnit!

me too!

so much for digital downloads huh?

u would think in this day and age mountain lion would automatically install itself onto your computer while u sleep?

lol

I could understand it it was a significant leap that you NEEDED, but it's not. It's an upgrade you don't need. Chill out and wait, maybe convince someone you know to buy our code off of you in a few days if you are going to do something.

I'm glad to say a fresh install of Mountain Lion fixed the really weird bug where I was no longer getting user interface sound effects anymore. (Even though they were enabled.) I wasn't getting anything. Including the camera shutter for screenshots, the move to trash and the empty trash sounds. Guess that's another plus for doing a fresh install instead of upgrade.

Though I did just run into a weird bug where I had Preview open, clicked its icon to cause the Open iCloud window to show up, and Command+Q'd to quit it. The app quit and the icon disappeared but the iCloud window stayed on screen for a minute with a beachball. Really weird. Is the iCloud open dialog in a separate process or something? Strange. But whatever.

Speaking of which. It's a shame I rarely use the Apple apps that have iCloud saving capability. TextEdit, Preview. Rarely do I run them. Hope more apps add iCloud in the future. I might actually use it for more than syncing my iOS style app data.

Love the boost in speed for pretty much everything. It's not a placebo effect - waking from sleep is, at last, as quick as it is for the iPad.

Purchase insta-justified.

Finally got it installed. Questions.

1. How do you set up imessage to see your online contacts if it's integrated with g-chat? It looks like the iPad message app now and i can send messages, but cant see who is online on gchat.
2. How do I add twitter to notification center?

Would buy this.

So if you save a document straight to iCloud via the iCloud browser... where is that document located?
I understand a version is located on the iCloud server of course, but how does that work?
Is the only version online, where the system downloads and uploads it each time you open and close the file?
Does one copy of the file stay on the server which is constantly amended whenever you make document changes? Or is this server file itself constantly overwritten?
Is there simply a copy of any iCloud files both on the server and on the system at the same time?

iCloud is cool but I have no idea how it works. I know the beauty is that I don't need to know, but I'm curious.....

I think basically what I'm asking is if I solely save any new work to iCloud through here:

how are these files accessible when I don't have an internet connection?

Hmm, so has anyone with a 2009 iMac installed Mountain Lion yet? If you aren't sure when yours was built, I found this tool earlier...

A handful of reviews in the Mac App store bitch about how slow it runs, but I wonder just how old their systems are. I mean I know a three year old computer is pretty much an antique, but in all fairness, Mac hardware does age more gracefully when it comes to OS upgrades. My system's a 2.66GHz Core 2 Duo with 8GB of RAM in it.

My main computer is a 2007 iMac (w/ 4GB RAM) and I have no complaints regarding speed. I did do a clean install though so not sure if that makes a difference.

Go to "Mail, Contacts & Calendars" in System Preferences (Apple for some reason chose this dumb name instead of Accounts) and add your Twitter account.

I got prompted when logging into the Twitter website if I wanted to add the account to OS X. Pretty nice touch (also works on Gmail). Guessing it's a Safari only thing though.

If you want a brief understanding of iCloud without reading the developer documentation, Saricusa's review of ML should answer all your questions. Basically Documents in the Cloud are stored everywhere all at once - iCloud, your computer, your phone, your iPad, etc, and it is versioned, so that it can negotiate changes that happen on multiple devices falling back on 'Truth' which is Apple's iCloud servers if needed (like the first time a file gets pushed to the all the other devices). In OS X Documents in the Cloud files are stored in ~/Library/Mobile Documents/$APP/ .

It's running like a champ on my late 2008 Macbook 2.4GHz with 8GB of RAM, so I'm sure you'll be fine.

Cool thanks. Did they integrate the Twitter timeline? Or do I still have to download a Twitter app?

I have the tweetbot beta now.

Also what about imessage? I can't see my gchat contact list anymore.

Unfortunately no, they don't seem to store them locally on your computer. I did a test and saved a document to iCloud. Then turned off my WiFi to simulate lack of internet. I couldn't access the file.

This is why DropBox and Google Drive have it right. Your files are stored locally to your computer. Any application can access them like they would a file in a folder, because they are. And they get synced when changes are made.

With iCloud it currently seems to be "either it's here, or it's there. Or you manually save it in two places, but then it won't sync changes." which is really silly. I really hope Apple adopts the DB style of syncing. It'd literally be iDisk done right. iDisk's failing was that it also stored files online instead of locally keeping them and uploading as needed. This could be the iDisk replacement people need. I know I'd get some use out of having my iCloud disk locally cached with either a drive mounted on the desktop or a folder in my Home. Whichever they choose, it would work. Especially if there's also a way to use it on Windows. I would consider purchasing space if they did it this way.

why are you guys in such a rush to be disappointed?

Fuck, your trolling in this thread is getting annoying. ML has exceeded my expetations, and pretty much every review I've read is pretty glowing. Its easily the most stable, best performing, polished, feature-rich version of OSX yet- for a ridiculously low price. Because you had some expectations that were completely disconnected from reality does not change that.

Wrong. Documents are absolutely stored locally after syncing. Its exactly like dropbox.

The OS is fine, none of the new features are grabbing me nor are that useful so far. 20 bucks is cheap but still. its an ok upgrade.

I think that $20 was very steep for this. The speed boost is nice, but I have literally used none of the new features. Should have been $10 at the most.

Oh I wish that were true. Even if I swipe SUPER fast, it still takes FOREVER for it to slow to zero. It's a really terrible bezier curve that drops quickly, but then slows down its drop when it gets near the end. It's usually about 100 pixels from finishing where the pan speed starts to slow much slower. I don't know why it needs really slow "parking". It's not a space ship being brought safely into port. iOS home screen switching doesn't take that long to "settle".

Yeah, this is the one big thing that's bugging me about ML. I ended up downloading total spaces to fix it. Now the problem is that total spaces won't let me use my regular 4-finger swipe up to access mission control. It lets you have a 2-dimensional grid for spaces, and it binds 4-finger swipes to switching to the space above the current one. But that's a small inconvenience for having a non-shitty switching animation.

...hate me...
Loving it so far. And Safari 6, <3

Shame that the new dock is gorgeous because I'm switching to side dock :(

I am beginning to dive into Mountain Lion's features and need help.

I added my Google Chat account without issue. But at the bottom of the lefthand column, there's a button to set my status for Jabber (online, offline, etc). Thing is... I don't even have a Jabber account.

Am I missing something?
