Cwarrior must have hated watching Hanna-Barbera cartoons growing up.

I freaking love Flintstones one of my favorite cartoons ever, am warning don't you dare talk bad about flintstones or do I need to cut a mothafucka up in here, I have no clue why you brought up hanna barbera.

What's your problem? You're part of my hatelist now.

She is just a little crockroach who wants some human friends and she is the reason that I have my tag! And the manga is great and funny.

They are the kings of stock animation.

The Light of El Cantare
Hanna-Barbera is universally unwatchable, reused animation being the least of the reasons why.

Application is everything. There's a difference between using your flaming punch to hit someone and using your flaming punch as a thruster to propel yourself through a strong barrier. This is also something FT is good at.

Are you implying that the latter ends up being the case more often as FT progresses?

I really need to squeeze in a couple of episodes per week even if I never progress from #hatewatch to actual watching; I honestly didn't intend to drop it completely after my sister bailed.

that's a Cigarettes Commercial not a flinstone episode.

Why does that matter? Those ads aired during the time of the show so its not like they were some far off thing separate from the show that people never encountered unless they sought it out. The whoring out of classic cartoon characters is a timed honored American tradition and I, for one, am glad we have brought that tradition to the rest of the world.

Probably the best storyline this season and all my emotions. This can go on the list of anime to make me weep and cry
When nagase jumped and then that entire ordeal of saying the last words and then when she and Taichi were there crying, I couldnt help but cry for a few minutes, it was so sad and touching.
.

Unforgettable.

Space Battleship Yamato 2199 1

Decided to finally check this out. After the live action movie, I really had no idea what to expect since the movie attempted to remove the campiness of having a giant WW2 ship flying around in space by grounding it in their "homage" to nu-Battlestar Galactica.

Of course, the episode opens with a dramatic space battle to get things going (thankfully sparing us the info dump for the middle of the episode - although even that infodump was placed in the context of the episode at least), but right off the bat I'm hilariously confused:

I have no idea what I think about a Japanese writer using a Battle of Bastogne reference (McAuliffe famously said "NUTS" when asked by the Germans to surrender), but it just seems kind of weird for some reason. I wonder if that was just some WW2-porn for the nerds out there or if Bastogne is considered a famous battle in Japan (I suppose mythologizing a battle where the Americans beat the Germans is better than Tawara or Guadacanal or any number of Japanese losses :p).

I'm sure I'm also the only one who cares about that stuff anyway. I don't even have a problem with cultural appropriation after all (since Aria is basically Venice-porn), but you'd think that since the Japanese "lost" to the Americans, they wouldn't hold American war stories with any real reverence. It's Space Battleship Yamato and not Space Battleship USS Enterprise after all.

The only other thing that bugged me was old-fashioned 2D sea battles in space:

Given that I just watched Star Trek 2 and Kirk kicks Khan's ass by exploiting Khan's two-dimensional thinking, seeing spaceships try to flank each other in 2D is just stupid. Even Moretsu Space Pirates was about to do 3D space battles!

Other than that, so far the story seems as standard military scifi as the movie was. But what the heck, I'm looking for any kind of starship science fiction now, and since I'm almost done Time Jam, this might slot in quite nicely.

It's more like a mix of both. The fights still generally end in asspull punches or something, but the content of the fights generally have some interesting applications of certain techniques (moreso for other characters than Natsu).

holy shit.
HOLY SHIT.
I am thoroughly in love with this. Completely and utterly intrigued.
Kuroyukihime is mega nuclear hnnngh with her butterfly persona and antennae hair.
I must have a figurine of her. This is my new mission in life.
Also, I'm hooked. Onto episode 2.

Yes..... Yes...... YES!!!!! JOIN MY SIDE!!!!!!

Did it remain consistent? I mean, I'm going to watch it anyhow, but I'm still curious.
Oh yeah, very much so. The only thing that changes is that they start amping up the mythology (what happened to Earth?!) starting at 15. It really makes me miss cheesy golden age science fiction. :)

Yeah, the show is pretty decent when it's not the Natsu show.

Daitarn 3 7

So the Meganoids attempt to steal an entire city instead of just part of one this time. Uh ok. Kid needs less fucking screentime too. I'd read somewhere that The Big O was a spiritual successor to Daitarn 3 and it seemed quite a bit more obvious in this ep compared to previous what with Garrison doing maintenance on Daitarn and the brewing rivalry between Beauty & Reika.

Animation in this ep was trying to watch as everyone's faces were fucked up. Fight at the end had some great ideas but it was sooo ugly.

Well, Asuna had to show up sooner or later. With luck, though, it won't be for too long after...

That windup! The tears were almost ready to flow, and then... Heartseed person just reminded everyone that him, and their situation, is not something to take lightly.

It's like saying that celebrities don't sell out for advertisements if those advertisements aren't in-show/in-movie.

yeahhh... at what point does that cigarette ad hurt or effect the narrative of the show, it is a separate thing from the story of the show.

it's obvious a few people missed the point here, I don't really care if an anime goes off in it's "spare time" outside the tv show to promote car insurance but it's when during the show that the story is interrupted to advertise goods, is where the problem lies.

Stuff like sailor moon take it to the next level by having 3 stock animation ads for the main character, 2 for the 13 other side characters, so the narrative is constantly interrupted by these toy commercials, it doesn't happen once in a while but every episode.

Pretty much every mecha show is going to have it's roots in some other mecha show which in turn was inspired by some other mecha show. At least, that's the impression that I've gotten based on my fairly limited experience with the genre.

The genealogy of a particular title might be quite interesting if you're happy enough to be an 'anime historian' as it were. However I've often found that some of the shows that I've watched as a part of that process have been quite...bad. Which isn't to say that 'all old anime', by which I mean 70's era stuff, is bad. It's just that I've had some less than stellar experience. In particular, the original Space Battleship Yamato was quite a chore to sit through. On that note, how are you finding Daitam 3?
