I wasn't being defensive I was actually saying indie developers don't care as much as power as other developers but more for what the console can do, that's just how I see it though.

I don't think all indie developers think that way, and you can't just assume they don't care. To be honest I think people shouldn't make groups of things and assume everything there works the same way and then use that to justify something.

I don't think all of them do I just think a lot of them do.

And it's NeoGAF, the place of assuming.

Well, that is true, but the Dreamcast took a part in it, no?

Anyway, I'm just happy we'll still have some competition around.

The Dreamcast did take part in Sega's downfall, because they were selling it for a loss when all their money had been lost in the Saturn generation, and its game development and sales are what ate the last if their cash reserves, but the Dreamcast did not cause Sega's downfall. That was all the mismanagement in the Saturn era that killed Sega's money and reputation.

If Sega had actually had some cash reserves when the Dreamcast came out, in fact, it would have sold a lot better and possibly won the generation. One of the things execs have said they wanted to do with the Dreamcast was include a DVD drive with full playback abilities, which was one of the reasons PS2 really took off. And right before the Dreamcast launch, and all throughout that first year, Sony was marketing the heck out of the PS2 to try and get gamers and developers to hold off on supporting Dreamcast, and Sega didn't have the budget to out-market Sony.

Yeah, but assuming things that way is what makes some people from the quantum leap thread so stubborn. Everyone thinks he knows better. Don't know, people these days love to complain about everything. I mean, why just not sit and enjoy the game? It's like they think everyone could actually be a reviwer.

Lots of people are assuming that Xbox 720 and PS4 launch games will look as good as Star Wars 1313, I feel people might be disappointed.

Well, but it doesn't matter if they care, they can't make any use of that power. It's kind-of in the definition of indie developer that they don't make games with the $10+ million budgets needed to actually take advantage of the extra power. To the indie developer that extra power means diddly squat, unless they can come up with some cool effect using 100% realtime generated assets.

Too long. Too too long.

I don't know, I think their games are going to look really good, yes even at launch. And even ignoring the "power" of these next systems I think there is an important factor being ignored... and that's money. Part of the reason that WiiU launch games don't look necessarily mind blowing is due to the fact that none of the games have huge "AAA" budgets, nor a lot of development resources. Most ports are being outsourced from the original game teams. Sony and Microsoft highly value the advancement of graphics and I'm sure they are going to sink a ton of money and resources into their first party launch games to demonstrate this. They both already have excellent relations to third parties, and I have this feeling... that... I don't know... 3rd party publishers are going to dump a lot more money into developing titles for it. So to sum it up, there is a lot more to consider than just the hardware itself. There is a lot of business going on here. Yes Wii U is going to be more powerful than 360/PS3, we know this based on the probable amount of RAM alone. I'm just worried that not a lot of people will bother to push the system, besides Nintendo and even then they will probably only really push it with their big franchises.

And that's the problem no AAA game is showing true Wii U graphics, Retro's game will most likely look amazing and Nintendo's first party, we will have to see what they look like.

Since I'm tired of the graphics debate right now, let me throw another discussion point into the pot:

What do you guys think about companion-apps/games?

It's not a new thing by any means. Connectivity, for example, did that already or take the Dreamcast's VMU.

But with recent stuff like the Dragon Quest X companion app for 3DS or that DUST 514-thing on the Vita which connects to DUST 514 on PS3 which itself is a tie-in to EVE Online on PC, I think the potential for really cool implementation is really high.

I wanna see more stuff like this between Wii U and 3DS titles. That DQX app (I forgot what it does at the moment) is a great start. Now what about a map-editor for Mario Kart or F-Zero tracks? A pedometer that earns you rupees or something like that to use in the next console Zelda. A lottery mini game for something like Darksiders that has all your loot info and if you StreetPass with someone, they get to play lottery with your items and can win one (without you losing it of course).

Some more cross-platform integration that keeps you engaged in the game even if you're away from the home console would be really really awesome. And I think the 3DS should be able to do that. Oh and a firmware update for 3DS to handle more activated StreetPass titles at the same time would be nice ...

Every single game for WiiU will be fine for me. No more blurry games on a HDTV.Nice and clear games and UI. Believe it or not thats what Im most hyped about.

My hope is that we hear of some good, solid 3rd party titles from the Japanese event. I'm not expecting anything substantial from NYC, except maybe Black Ops 2.
Are all the events on the same date?

Someone has recreated Blastoise using UE 3, Nintendo really need to do an HD Pokemon game IMO.

Edit beaten by a long shot, but still that looks amazing.

Keep those expectations in check, boys.

I think expecting any significant new game reveals/announcements, beyond the predictable (eg: Black Ops 2), is letting expectations run out of control. At this stage in the pre-launch period a wise man will expect marketing and promotion, and take any big, new announcements as unexpected surprises.

Sometimes I feel some fans will be living on the verge of new game announcements for every Nintendo Direct and press events leading up to the Wii U's launch, and I think it is these people who will be most disappointed.

I hate to keep repeating myself, but just to be clear, we will absolutely see new games by 3rd parties revealed at the Japanese event. I'm not expecting anything too megatonish, but I suspect we'll see some nice titles.

How they handle Pokemon is what has me hyped for the Wii U more then anything else, they have the power now to challenge the big console RPGs, and kick their arse basically.

If people didn't let their expectations run out of control... then this wouldn't be GAF (or the whole damn industry, lol) :D

Oh, those risky and horrible games of expecting something awesome in the gaming industry xD. They are cruel, yet fun.

---

I think that Nintendo will reveal launch dates for Wii U console and some Wii U games, more features of Mii Verse, more features of Wii U games, new footage and trailers, and finally maybe a game or two.

Hopefully, a look into the future, but this could happen when we get closer to the Wii U launch date, like in a Nintendo Direct in October or November.

I'll get hyped just for the funz :D

Exactly. I made the mistake of expecting the world from Nintendo at E3 and it worked against me. The September event is a promotional vessel more than anything else. Don't risk burning yourself out by having unrealistic expectations.

Honest question what audience is Nintendo focusing on the Wii U, the core or casual, because I think it's Core with a little bit of casual.

You know, it isn't unreasonable to expect something big this September. A few months ago Iwata said that they would detail not only the launch games, but also some games slated for 2013. Either we'll get new announcements, Iwata is a liar, or he simply is referring to games we already know about that won't make the launch window.

I would say both markets, but the mass market will be their main focus as they have done nothing to reach out to them thus far.

Have you ever played a Pokemon game before? Nintendo *never* pushes technology in those games. They always use simple graphic technology (not talking about art style) even when similar games in the same system are already using far more advanced technology.

Yes, from the Japan conference I agree. Nintendo has been virtually silent on the Wii U in Japan. It will be a blowout, and there has to be a number of Japanese developed games announced for the launch window- right now there are 3.

Both, with different agendas. Casual is the general family friendly / everyone audience, and this was heavily pushed by their E3 line-up. Wii Fit U, Nintendo Land, New Super Mario Bros. U, and U Sing. Just Dance 4 and Rabbids Land fit under the same umbrella too.

Most of the 'core' software came from third party publishers and developers, with Pikmin 3 and the under represented P-100 as Nintendo's main, exclusive core titles.

If I had to pick one then Nintendo's published launch window games, and marketed titles, are primarily casual/family titles. They seem to be pushing the core focus towards their third party ports.

I know people arent really gonna get terribly upset for expecting new games. I expect to see new games( I know will we see japanese 3rd party soon) But even if they dont show it big deal. Im not gonna get upset. We will see them eventually.

Yes, the NoA event will be pointless, apart from price. Except for CoD we're done with major game announcements from Western 3rd parties for now and also with 1st party apparently. Most of the 2013 titles will be the same shit from E3, but delayed or simply at the end of this ,,launch window''.
Overall, a ridiculously terrible introduction of the new Nintendo home console, that isn't going to look too much better after the 13th, but maybe there's still some neat surprises among Iwatas Japanese announcements. I'd love to see Tales of U. PAL lands never got it back then, so I'm currently playing Tales of the Abyss for the first time and I'm enjoying it so much more than Xenoblade and Last Story.

All I expect from the September 13th conference is.

Release Date
Price
2013 game announcements
Virtual Console
Miiverse

I'm not going to lie and say I wish Nintendo will show a glimpse of what Retro is working on.

But I hyped that for E3 and got nothing.

I think is awesome. Me and a friend were talking about this other day: What if Skyrim is announced for Wii U and then you could use your 3DS like a "box"? You could carry your equips with you and sell or trade them to other players. Maybe donate. Nintendo could let people use 3DS coins to purchase some of them too. I would love to see somenthing like that.

Look at this gen, Nintendo went to employ new gamers into the scene, MS and Sony seen the $potential$ and wanted a slice. Sony suffered the most by trying to be a 'core' friendly company. Next gen they will all try and find the middle ground. MS & Sony both suffered, but MS reacted the best; Nintendo suffered also suffered for being too casual focused.

You can fill in the blanks for what you think will happen next gen, and whether they will achieve their goals.

Yeah considering there only 3 Japanese games for the "launch window", which stretches well into 2013, a couple more titles being announced seems pretty realistic/feasible.

It should be more than a couple, unless we think Japanese support is somehow going to be worse than Western support. It will of course probably mostly be ports, etc., even late ports would be better than what the Wii started with in Japan.

How will Nintendo introduce more Japanese titles to the Western market? Do they do it at a pre-event Nintendo Direct, at the event in NYC itself, or do they announce them at the Japanese event?

That's really the only question mark for me at this point. We know Capcom has stuff headed to the Wii U that they have yet to announce.

I doubt it will be pointless theres gonna be plenty to show. 1hour announcement of price? ok.

Well, from western developers I'm expecting just CoD BLOPS2 and F1 Star race announcments, but honestly if Wii U will see in the launch window (november-march) just Tank Tank, Tekken TT2 and DQX from japanese developers, I'll be really disappointed.
And I don't think that I'll be disappointed because of too high expectations...
