Hopefully Fujifilm

that kodak is ending? Sure. But not for film, Kodaks film business was one of the only areas they were still profitable. Fujifilm is still doing well.

Hopeful they sell the brand too. Its going to be wired if its not called Kodak film anymore. "Fujifilm Ektar 100" "Fujifilm Tri-X Pan"

And here's Fuji's NEX-6 competitor. No word on price yet. And of course, it's EVF-only. I'm leaning more towards the 6 than this.

And while we're at it, a new Fuji compact zoom:

Probably not a 1" sensor, given the focal length.

Wha, its going to be hard to pick from N7 N6 and XE1. I expect they all cost around 1k by the time I am ready to buy.

It's really hard to decide between the superior MF capacity of the NEX bodies and the lens and color of the X system. One day I think I am leaning toward NEX, the next day I think X is a better long term solution for me.

Xe-1 looks kinda cool. I wish fuji would make the buttons on the back better. For a high end cam they really kind of suck (x100 at least, I don't see any pics of the back of the Xe-1 but I imagine they are the same).

oh yeah, someone brought their D4 into my office...

Thing is an absolute BEAST.

No interest in the EOS M?

EOS M only make sense if you own or will own a Canon FF system. I really like Fuji's selection of lens. I think they are perfect for enthusiasts. They probably need one more pancake in the 35mm equivalent range and thats all I need.

I much prefer the x100 buttons over the typical Canon or Nikon setup. The menus are another discussion, but still.

I just wanted to thank you for this detailed comparison (I was banned shortly after you posted it so I'm sorry for the delay).

You've convinced me to sell the 50mm and replace it with the other two lenses.

Here you go.

Not a problem.
This experiment was done for my benefit as well.

I now have both the 40mm pancake & 85mm in my bag the majority of the time, and left the 24-70L at home.
The combo is just more convenient to handle, and less intimidating for the subjects.

Reading speculation that the NEX 5R and 6 won't be available till the start of next year or for this holiday? That'd suck for me since I want to buy a camera within September to early October. I'll probably end up getting a 5N with an external EVF instead if hat ends up being the case.

Gah. I don't want to wait that long. I like my NEX-3, but I want something that's more usable soon. I guess I'll wait to see what release dates look like around Photokina and then decide. The D600 might be out before all of them, at this rate.

Why not a used N7.

Why not a used N7.

Looking at used prices its definitely a possibility. It depends on what I can find and I'm sort of weary of the corner issues I've read about with the N7 with rangefinder lenses... not that it should really matter to me though since I'll probably buy vintage DSLR lenses and adapt them anyways, at first.

I'm enticed by the D600 too but even at its relative low price its out of my range. Can't wait to see what it can do though.

Where are you seeing that? The 5R is going to be announced Wednesday. Unless there's another natural disaster in Asia, I can't see either model not making it in time for the holiday season.

Had read it on Sony Alpha Rumors I believe, although I agree that it'd be crazy to miss the holidays. What's the precedent for Sony announcing a new body and the amount of time it takes to hit stores?

NEX7, due to Thailand flood.

Speaking of Thailand. I paid 60 for a 2TB HDD before the flood. Now I have to 130 for a 3TB, well after the flood. God damn WD and Seagate and greedy bastards, I hope some Attorney General go price fixing on their asses.

Supposedly the flood was an excise to raise prices despite there being no actual shortage.

Since Seagate bought out Samsung's HDD division and Western Digital is the only other competitor it has been a duopoly for some time now. With HDD prices bottoming out it was an easy scapegoat to rape customer wallets.

Took a shot of the clock at the central station and the lighting on the clock doesn't look right at all. Is this because of an ISO that is too low? Or because I set the white balance to 'shade'?

So, I just sold my Canon 550D. I will probably be picking up a Sony rx100 next week if I'll be able to find one for around 600€.
The age of dslrs is truly over for me.

Which settings should I change in order to fix the exposure?
I'm reading my book I bought on Amazon now but I'm not that far in it yet, learning all the basic functions at the moment.

Probably a combination of aperture, and metering of the scene, those bright areas can be a pain

It's gonna be almost impossible to get a shot like that perfect with a single exposure. You'll likely need to either bracket multiple exposures and merge them in post production, or shoot RAW and fix just the clock and sky selectively.

You can't. Properly capturing a scene like that is best handled by merging two separate pictures – one exposed for the clock, another exposed for the environment.

Here's an example I took with my old 2MP P&S back in 2004 before I knew anything about photography or Photoshop. I think it turned out well.

Entry level FF rumors heating up. Nikon D600 should be here by Photokina and the Canon 6D around October. Both looking to offer $1500 bodies apparently. Let's push those 5D2 prices to $1000 please!

Nope. CLP is normally 20% off if you buy a body/lens combo, but this weekend they are dropping 15% on top of the normal discount. It's madness!

iEfpTQSEgwDqp.png
I dunno, I just gave them a call and the csr said the 15% promotion and 20% CLP deal are separate and can't be combined.

Bought a used Fuji X100. I'm impressed so far, except for one thing:

Who the hell approved the menu button? Did they test this before they released it?

I thought this at first too - and I'm not saying it gets any better...but it kind of gets better.

Overall I just don't find myself going into the menu very often.

I mapped F1 or whatever it is to ISO and the Raw button to the ND. After that - haven't really been menu diving.

Enjoy the camera! Its definitely one of my favorite cameras in a really long time. I shoot every day with it.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?

Can you guys comment on the build quality of the X100? I've had the X10 for about a week now - and I absolutely love it. It's.... dare I say it... near perfect. A bit bigger of a sensor and a better viewfinder, and I'd wager it would be perfect. Which makes me think the X100 might be right up my alley. But I don't know if I want to back track and go to a fixed lens and worse AF. That, and the X10's build quality is a 9.9/10. It's spectacular; the best feeling camera under a thousand dollars for sure. And I've heard the X100 is actually kind of a step down.

Also; yeah, I'm really hoping for a $1500 FF from Canon. I'd be all over such a thing, for sure. Might actually make it a Day One purchase if I can get a 0% finance deal somewhere.

I'm not sure that's the case, WD's factory in Thailand produced specific parts with machines not present in any of their other global factories so there definitely wasn't any production for a while. No reason for them to still be this high in price though.

They sure seem to be a pain everywhere.

I could do that, I'm doing RAW from the beginning anyway - I probably should do JPEG as a start, but it seems RAW is great for post editing.

You can try changing the exposure with this button:

D3S_2761-top-comp.jpg
Yeah, the book mentioned something like this, I'll try play more with it.

Hovedbanegården looks kinda empty. Was it early in the weekend?
It was a bit empty, not by much, it was at afternoon on an everyday.

Very interesting, though I don't have Photoshop on my Mac until next year, then I'll try edit my images.

And generally, I have major trouble with my photographs:

Guess I need a Macro Lense for shooting close to objects:

Overexposed? I thought it was difficult not getting the reflection, should I focus elsewhere?

so, following up from like 2 months ago - I got a t4i, a 18-55mm EF-S IS II Lens, and a EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS II Telephoto Zoom Lens (talked to a friend who's been a professional photographer for 20 years about it).

Got some filters to protect the lenses, too.

Ive had them for about a month, and been practicing shooting, hiking, etc. Thought I'd say thanks to all the advice from late June, I appreciate it, and I might share a shot or two from Africa when I get back in 3 weeks!

What lenses are you using for these photos?
Also, what distance are you from the subject? Shutter speed and aperture?
Tripod, or hand-held?

Photo 1:
You might be past the minimum focusing distance on the top photo. It looks like you were focusing on the wall or palm tree in the back. Hard to tell without knowing what lens was used.

Photo 2:
Try exposure compensation or underexpose a bit.
A circular polarizing filter would help if you are trying to avoid the reflection.
Were you trying to get a shallow depth of field, or greater depth of field in this picture?
I don't think focusing was a factor with exposure or reflections in this photo.

In regards to a certain area of a subject to focus, try selecting one of the nine focus points manually.

Press the "zoom in" button (60D, "+ magnifying glass", the upper right on rear of camera) with your thumb.

Through your viewfinder, select one of the focus points with either your main dial (top of camera with index finger), quick control dial or 8-way pad (rear of camera with your thumb).

Then, press the "set" button to lock the focus point.

Overexposed? I thought it was difficult not getting the reflection, should I focus elsewhere?

This is essentially the same issue as that other station photo, the scene you are shooting has a larger dynamic range (say over 20 stops) than your SLR's sensor can handle (say between 10-15 stops depends on the sensor size). You either lost detail in the highlight, or you lost detail in the shadow. In both cases the camera decided to meter against the shadow and save more detail.

The solution is to avoid getting into this situation. A couple different solutions:

* don't shoot at the windows when you are inside
* shoot during dust or dawn
* shoot with a shade on the window to reduce the light
* shoot multiple photos on a tripod and post process it
* shoot with film, since most films have non-linear highlight characteristic

The reason you eyes can see both the highlight detail and shadow details because human eyes are like camera camcorder and the brain does real time hdr.

IIME even you you do real HDR processing (with multiple photos, not the fake HDR mode in Photoshop), the result photo still won't look realistic. I personally won't bother. Unless you want the "HDR" look, that is.

To be honest I have only used / seen the x100. So I can't really comment on the build quality of 1 vs the other.

That being said if you are happy with your x10 then stick with it. The x100 is great but I don't know at this point if it's a better camera for you. Maybe try to see if you can see one at a store or something?

Also the x100 had another firmware update (1.30 I think?) and it seems like with every update the autofocus gets better and better. The manual focus on it has gotten better as well.

With all the craziness going on - I would definitely wait until photokina to see what shakes out. For all we know the x200 doesn't get announced.
