NPD August 2012 Sales Results [Up3: Sleeping Dogs]

Not really. If it sold 55k, then that's still a horrible number. It's just a psychological barrier, just like the 10k barrier in the japanese weekly sales.

I realize that, hence the all things considered. Did any Vita titles come out at all during the tracking period in NA?

I expect Borderland 2 numbers to be a little disappointing but it will be due to many people who bought console versions of the first one moved on to PC gaming.

not really

it had the best dlc attached rate on 360

and has high pre order on all 3 platforms

even ps3 dd version will come pre loaded on psn

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
No Nintendo press release even with 3DS XL launch?

I guess Nintendo it's not happy.

Probably not happy, but only 7 days of sales for XL on this NPD.

Darksiders 2 is a complete betrayalton to fans of the first. I'm done with that series.

Somehow I don't think those #'s are what THQ were hoping for. Can't say I'll shed many tears if there's no DS3. Sad to see an awesome game like sleeping dogs not do so well :/

You would have thought there would be a similar effect with Sleeping Dogs with the PC version being so superior, but the Steam stats on concurrents have been pretty small every time I've looked at it.

They only seem awful because they are awful. It's time for next gen and some games that blow peoples minds graphically.

I'm with you. I can't believe there isn't massive outrage at that fucking ending...

I don't think the casual masses are really going to be blown away by next gen as compared to previous leaps.

Microsoft can continue to use the "current generation" definition though hehe ;) That would exclude the WiiU. But i'm not sure that they will continue to use this definition after WiiU is out to be honest.

That's correct, they could easily do that. However like you also said I don't think MS is going to be that cynical in their PR and spin it though.

I think it's somewhat relative.

We don't really know what Square Enix paid for the True Crime rights and the development work done so far before Activision dropped the game. It may have been a pittance (or a fortune) compared to revenue it's bringing in.

I'm still hopeful. I'm ready to see it, that's for sure. I suppose if that UE4 demo was an indication, you may be correct. Took a year for the first game to blow my mind this gen (Gears of War). So we'll see.

Surprised that Transformers didn't sell better with its brand power. I imagine that it and Darksiders II will be slow burners, selling a lot more over the holiday. I'm still holding out for Darksiders II on Wii U, myself.

Yeah I'm glad I got sleeping dogs the same day as darksiders 2. Unfortunately I recommended DS2 to my brother instead of SD because I thought it was a safe bet.

I feel kinda bad about that...

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
Nintendo definitely seems to have an opportunity with Wii U. Will be interesting to see what happens.

Uh huh, when bad shit happens to my other electronics, all my purchases don't die with it. Still being the only one that ties purchases to hardware paints them as clueless and out-of-touch as they actually are. Can't blame anyone for ignoring their e-shop.

I don't lose my electronics... It is stupid that Nintendo doesn't have an account system yet, but when you lose your physical stuff nobody replaces that. Treat your stuff with respect. Even with other devices you still have to replace your device and any physical media you put in it. I don't even want to have to replace the device itself, so I'm going to be careful and not lose it. Nintendo will fix that problem after WiiU comes out.

I can't blame anyone for ignoring the e-shop for that reason, either. It's a legitimate complaint. But we don't know how many people didn't ignore the eshop and whether or not it's a significant number, yet.

WfC didn't do that hot, even one of the Devs (or the publisher, can't remember which) commented about how dissapointed they were with it's performance. I can't see really doing all that great over the comming months.

So DDD did about on par with BbS? Not so good...

Yep. And the saddest part is, that's completely what I expected. Especially after DDD's disappointing sales in Japan as well.

I hope the next stop is KHIII (though a Collection beforehand would be nice too). The franchise is just withering away at this point.

You'll be wrong if the pre-order numbers are accurate.

Yeah but how many of those will not be counted since they are from the steam 4 pack sale, or greenmangaming or psn or whatever? B2 might end up 2 behind madden with 900k in sales when in reality it might be coser to 2M.

I'm sorry to almost agree with an EA executive, but NPD is pretty irrelevant nowadays (his words, don't shoot me)

All Next-Gen consoles should have been released this year. Microsoft and Sony are playing a dangerous game and tempting an industry crash by extending it out this long. At this point they are pretty much mirroring what Atari did by believing they don't need new consoles and pumping out crap games that are pretty much just pallet swaps of every other game. It's possible that the top selling individual SKU sold less than 160,000 this month, when is the last time that happened?

This situation reminds me of this article, the writer could see the future.

You're right on the length part, but the games part is way off base.

It's a device aimed squarely at children. Children break, lose things. I'm also surprised at how aware of the difference between Nintendo's policies and Apple's policies that kids are. My nephews and nieces have no interest at all in Nintendo because they can't share their purchases with their brothers and sisters. I applaud them for being educated on the differences. My own daughter likes using my XL, but given the choice for herself, she chose a Touch. I can't fault her.

About why simple hand/eye co-ordination games aren't not ruling consoles:
Among a certain age group, portable gaming machines are as common as cell phones.

So much said in so little.

Gameplay changes, art changes, hell, genre changes! And they also decided to be buttheads about the narrative. This is not how you build a loyal fan base and it shows and will show.

I partially agree that this generation is long in the tooth, but I'm also wondering if maybe the economy finally caught up to the games industry. For all the economic problems of the last five or so years, it felt like the industry was fairly insulated. But, like a ripple, it feels like wider economic concerns over the value of things seem to have finally caught up with AAA gaming and the retail market.

And if the economy is in poor shape and people are putting off gaming in general, I'm not too sure new consoles (with the new costs associated with them on a consumer and developer level) are going to rectify anything.

Nintendo has responded to the latest NPD report. While commenting on 3DS’ performance, the company confirmed sales for both New Super Mario Bros. 2 and Kingdom Hearts 3D.

Take a look at the press release below for that information and more.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 Emerges as the Best-Selling Video Game of August

Even with only five days of reported data, Nintendo 3DS XL and New Super Mario Bros. 2 still had major impacts on the August video game market. The new hardware, which features 90 percent larger screens than the original Nintendo 3DS, and the new side-scrolling Mario adventure both launched on Aug. 19 and helped Nintendo achieve the following:

  • Nintendo 3DS software sales increased by more than 68 percent over sales in July.
  • Nintendo 3DS hardware sales increased by more than 36 percent over sales in July.
  • The No. 1 and No. 2 top-selling software SKUs for the month are both exclusive to Nintendo 3DS. New Super Mario Bros. 2 sold more than 240,000 units to finish No. 1, and KINGDOM HEARTS 3D [Dream Drop Distance] from Square Enix sold more than 180,000 copies to finish No. 2.

“Software sells hardware, and no one sells either quite like Mario,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “In addition to helping New Super Mario Bros. 2 get off to a great start, Nintendo 3DS XL is driving increased interest in titles such as Kid Icarus: Uprising, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and Mario Kart 7. These games have been on the market for more than six months but provide a completely new experience on the larger screens. Combine these titles with the upcoming Paper Mario: Sticker Star and a robust list of third-party games, and Nintendo 3DS is poised to be high on holiday wish lists this year.”

I hope that somehow Sleeping Dogs becomes a slow-burner, or does enough to at least warrant a sequel. It is probably the best open-world crime game since the original Mafia (yes, better then every single GTA).

I feel bad for renting it. :/
