dreamcast and ps2 had this years before
The Saturn NiGHTS controller was first, and PS2 doesn't really count

I'd argue that finally cracking the wireless controller conundrum was, by far, Nintendo's greatest contribution to the world of controllers with the GCN pad.
All the buttons on Dualshock 2 were analog. Not really sure if that feature was ever used
No, not at all. It's just (for me as a multi console and PC owner) I always associated a 'generational leap' with being utterly blown away by shit that absolutely, unquestionably cannot be done with the hardware I already own. That isn't the case anymore. Well, until the other two unveil their new toys. Even then, they might go modest too, who knows.I mean
Is that a particularly unreasonable position to take?
That Nintendo's next system is a generational leap over their previous once since they got out of the tech race?
Even the shoulder ones? I knew the face buttons were, but I've never heard of the triggers being analog. All the buttons on Dualshock 2 were analog. Not really sure if that feature was ever used
I know you've seen the zelda tech demo somewhere on the internet by now. You know that the demo looks much better than that crappy photo that was shot off a tv screen

MGS3 took advantage of that feature IIRC.
I don't think I've done a good job of clarifying the difference between something looking good an something being impressive. They aren't the same thing to my mind. It's half past one in the morning here do perhaps I'd better attempt clarification in the morning. Suffice to say, not every good looking game impresses me.
Your analogy is more accurate.Wii-U is Parent Trap Lohan, more than 1, and underdeveloped and cute?
PS4/720 is blonde haired Lohan but before she became a total clusterfuck but well on their way to that path
I don't really mind if WiiU is just a current-gen console on steroids. It might be a good thing if it keeps game dev costs down and allows developers to leverage current-gen game engines.
E.G. Xenoblade was probably my best gaming experience of this generation. I seriously doubt such a game could've been profitably made if it were done in HD. The dev costs would've been enormous.
I don't recall any major analog function being mapped to the shoulder buttons in MGS3. It was all limited to the face buttons.
Finally I can rest in peace. Its 3 nintendo wii's duck taped together.
Not major, no, but you could lean by pressing L2, R2, or both at once.
Its rather interesting that so much RAM is being used for OS, appears to be 512MB, I wonder how quickly that will shrink.
How can you claim it will allow developers to keep costs down? If it's simply this generation plus from little extra grunt for visual splendor... it means that the budgets for AAA and AAAA, and AAAAAA titles will exceed that of titles on PS360. And it cannot take advantage of the higher capability hardware and features such as global illumination, tessellation, and other advancements that are intended to allow developers to save time/money.
WU!

Because AAA+ multiplat titles won't be done on the wii u as much as the other two. At least not of the same fidelity. I see no reason why anyone has to worry about the system not being cost effective, considering the crazy, over budgeted titles wont be on it as much, if at all.
At first I thought HD Assets = More money, but im thinking its more to do with bloated marketing budgets and waste that contribute to the cost of development just as much.
So why not even USB 3.0 ports?
These specs certainly doesn´t scream next gen.
So it's just a continuation of the Nintendo formula. Hardware focused almost exclusively towards Nintendo games.

If you mean a continuation of the Wii formula, then essentially, yes.
Nintendo has not always been about this formula, however, contrary to what many people seem to believe.
It's gonna be the best current gen console on the market.
I don't feel like going into detail so I'll save myself time and just say it's not possible (with evidence). Happy?
Actually, this thread is getting derailed. Not good.
Can you please explain what the Zelda demo is doing that's not possible on the ps360? I'm talking about specifics here since you seem pretty sure of your assumption.
I don't see anything beyond current gen in that tech demo.
I'm still visually pleased/impressed by my Game&Watch games.
For like a year... And don't forget it's gonna take at least a year for games to actually start looking better.ding ding ding

Well, the resolution is excellent.
Both MGS2 and MGS3 used the analogue triggers. Not just for leaning around corners, but also when crouched behind something, you could squeeze both trigger together to poke your head up and take a look around.

I don't get it.
That isn't impressive at all.
I totally agree, Nintendo can´t afford to lost money upfront for the new console like Sony or MS. I´m sure they come with the better hardware they could without miss a mass market price. While it can be viewed as a continuation of the Wii type policy its quite different in the fact Nintendo has embraced modern shader architecture etc versus using unique stuff.
Wii U may be similar to the wii in the sense they didn't release a 1000 dollar box for 599 but its not in the same boat. Support should be much better but that doesn't mean it will be
Well yeah, if you want to get into the nitty gritty technical side of it. It's still the wii philosophy, but yeah, its not exactly in the same boat as the Wii.While it can be viewed as a continuation of the Wii type policy its quite different in the fact Nintendo has embraced modern shader architecture etc versus using unique stuff.

It's got a high def Link! No other console can have that!
Totally agree. A "next gen" console should be something that blows you away immediately with things that you couldn't imagine on previous consoles.
A HD Wii is nice, but other than the prospect of playing more awesome Nintendo games, it doesn't really do that for me.
This urks me. When does something become a "full" generational leap? You admit the graphics are already so what more does it have to achieve?I expect Wii U to be in a similar position relative to current-gen HD consoles to where 3DS is relative to PSP: not a full generational leap, but capable of games that look a good deal better from developers that know how to push the hardware.
Mind you, I also expect the percentage of games that take full advantage of the GPU to be similar on both platforms (i.e. not high).
The overall aesthetics about the demo puts it above current gen.Can you please explain what the Zelda demo is doing that's not possible on the ps360? I'm talking about specifics here since you seem pretty sure of your assumption.
I don't see anything beyond current gen in that tech demo.
Post-SNES era, the entire point of Nintendo consoles is to play awesome Nintendo games on them. Anything else is a bonus.
Post-SNES era, the entire point of Nintendo consoles is to play awesome Nintendo games on them. Anything else is a bonus. I have loved all my Nintendo consoles and handhelds, but the SNES was the last time a bit of Nintendo hardware was my main gaming platform.
In that regard, The Wii U will offer gaming experiences that weren't possible on previous Nintendo consoles. It doesn't matter if the PS4/Xbox3 is 10 times as powerful as the Wii U, as they won't be home to Nintendo games.
Can update me as to how the Nintendo fans are spinning this?
Uh, were you not blown away the first time you saw Super Mario 64?
