New Obsidian countdown teaser [Update 2: Kickstarter? One more day!]

Well, with BioWare shitting the bed and squandering their fantasy RPG franchise with Dragon Age, I'm totally down with Obsidian making their own fantasy RPG IP to pick up the slack.

I didn't have any problems with it until well into the 3rd expansion, it was around that time my save file got to a size that caused slowdowns like what used to happen with Skyrim pre-patch. If you play the game without playing all the expansions it will probably run fine. Shame that never got fixed though.

Well I never play Expansions on anything, and this is very cheap nowadays, I tihnk I will risk it and get it, thansk man.

And sorry for the off topic stuff.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
I got in contact with Tim Cain just to tell him how much I adored Arcanum, and the things I'd do for a new game in that universe. He told me Activision Blizzard likely own the IP, and don't seem to have any intention of using it, let alone acknowledge they even have it.

True story.

Maybe they forgot they own it. Tell them to make Arcanum 2.

Activision renewed their trademark last January. You can look forward to them neglecting the IP for many years to come.

Of course they won't. That's not a first person shooter that they can churn out once a year that'll sell ten million. And they won't sell it to anyone else because...uh...because...I got nothing.

Baffling.

wisely, @Feargus brought in two plaid shirts today for filming. #beprepared

Given that the teaser is on their own website, and kickstarters require videos, this seems very suggestive.

People called Romanes they go the house?
Odd though, for Obsidian to market something like a Kickstarter on their own website, at least, to this level of mystery, complete with a countdown timer.

I guess I've always just associated that kind of marketing with more...big budget titles, stuff that's already planned out and in production, rather than something like Kickstarter, which is generally building stuff from the concept/idea stage.

Although, this is certainly getting the hype/word spread, so it's certainly possible it's for a possible Planescape sequel or a new IP.

If there was a publisher and a large budget involved, they would be handling the marketing. It would be unusual in that scenario for the countdown to be on the developer's own website.

Christ, this effing week.

Tomorrow is new iPhone announcement day.
Followed by (hopefully) Wii U launch information announcement day.
Now, followed by New Obsidian Project That Is Probably A Kickstarter That Will Cost Me Lots Of Money announcement day.

feels like a lot for an unassuming mid-September week.

Just curious though how do we know this will be a kickstarter and not a published game announcement?

The best arguments would be:

1.) It's being advertised by Obsidian directly instead of by a publisher.
2.) Their forum description doesn't exactly sound like someone else's project given that usually their published products have actual codenames.

I'm really scared of another kickstarter and how it could backfire.

I just hope there isn't some kind of fatigue regarding the platform. :(

Man that would actually be exciting to me if they unveiled like an uber kickstarter with proper marketing. Like 5-10 million for a new game or something. Exciting mainly just to see where it would go. Also if it was actually a real awesome franchise or something interesting.

I feel it depends on:

1.) How much they ask for.
2.) How much they show when they ask.

Planetary Annihilation had solid success as a recent example, but they also had an impressive visualization demo.

If Obsidian's kickstarter asks for $5 million and presents some concept art, it probably isn't going anywhere.

If they present a prototype and ask for $1 million, they will probably have a lot more luck.

But if they ask for 5 million and unleash a great campaign, and maybe its a game people have been wanting, i could see them going for that next level of kickstarter, proper funding of bigger budget games just to see if its possible. I dont think the limits have been fully tested.

If it is a Kickstarter it's likely they'll have quite a bit to show and talk about. Perhaps not some full trailer demo just yet (though it seems entirely possible), but at the very least much more of a solid, concrete idea to convey as far as exactly what the game would be than we've seen from the other big Kickstarters, which have all been fairly nebulous to some degree.

There's also the examiner article linked earlier that claims to have inside information that it's a "PC-exclusive title, and something of a "crowd pleaser" for fans of hardcore RPG gaming" and the text released on the countdown page appears to indicate a new IP. Both of these make it unlikely that this is a project supported by a traditional publisher.

The tweet from jesawyer quoted above could also be read as indicating that they're filming a kickstarter pitch.

I would say that for a professional company, something along the lines of what Grim Dawn showed would be appropriate, especially if asking for a larger than normal sum.

If Ziets is right and it was a rejected pitch, then they should have a fairly polished demo done if they were serious when shopping it around to publishers.

so purchasing plaid shirts to show their blue collar factory worker role in the industry making some of our favourite games?

kickstarting a full size AA(?) game? Obsidian may have the clout with a very good pitch and very professional management of updates and stretch goal reveals. I would like to see their group be able to self fund/publish but I saw it as being a smaller company doing that.

Either way am interested in whatever they do. New Vegas, Alpha Protocol, and the lineage of past games made them one of my favourite devs ever.

It's probably not Wheel of Time, but now that somebody's suggested it I'm sad that there isn't a proper WoT game. It could be so good if done right.

Either way, I'm totally in for whatever Obsidian cooks up.

and thankfully it is not necessarily a "4" game, the number is a daily countdown.

I know nothing about wheel of time so they will need to introduce me to that if its a kickstarter.

So far we know it's PC only, fantasy setting, not seemingly based on existing anything, and very likely kickstarter driven. Well, I just got a $3k bonus at work Obsidian. Act quick before I spend it all on stupidly practical things.

Plus a Bloodlines - Alpha Protocol crossover, in which you play vampire Mike Thorton, with recruitable buddies MCA and Heck.
