I went to the Wii U Experience in LA on Friday. I made a video of the trip with my impressions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMhsUk3Aht4

Overall, I thought the Gamepad/Pro controller worked really well. The best looking games on the floor were made by Nintendo. ZombiU was definitely fun to play too. It really made me wish I had pre-ordered it, but that's what I get for being poor!

lmao!
I jumped when you said "hey"
damn headphones lol
nice vid tho
Rayman looks amazing

Like D-e-f- already said, there will be games that can be fully played on the gamepad
but some (like ZombiU) won't.
it all depends on how the developers manage the use of the gamepad and their game
but so far just a few games support the Off-TV Play function

The question is if you will be able to fire up, navigate the menu and start the game completely without ever having a a TV plugged in from the unboxing to starting up the game.

Since the interface seemed to be a bit of an unknown I'm not sure what the consensus on that was, but mainly people thought the real menu would be on the pad anyways so Miiverse on the TV screen wouldn't be needed to start up games?

I want dat :3

This is something I am definitely interested in.

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
That list of off-tv games is larger than I'd guess. Question remains if you can boot up the console and start up those games without the TV set on? That ability would allow folks to take it on the road to places without a TV, such as Starbucks or even a car with those standard outlets built in (tailgating anyone?).

But what of the Wii U itself?
Anyone know if one can turn it on (and use the gamepad to navigate through the menu) without a TV?

Well don't base your purchase on this, but I don't see why that wouldn't be in. They made the Wii interface navigatable by the classic controller right? Gamepad menu should be obvious.

You should get some sort of TV. You might miss some cool start up stuff. And chances are you're gonna need a TV to see some stuff when you boot it up the first time.

The Wii U is already pre-ordered because I managed to nab it at a good price, but I'm waiting for the after-holiday's sales to pick up a TV.
Ah well, worst case scenario I might go up to a month without being able to touch the Wii U :p

This is the overall design philosophy of the console by creating a system that doesn't take away the TV from the rest of the family while you play. Leaving this out would be the opposite of that strategy so I'd have to say it's pretty much a guarantee.

Haha sounds like hell, surely there's somebody with a TV around, or hell ask a store if you can abuse one of their display units. No way we'll let you sit there only staring at the thing!

Yeah exactly. Ideaman, save us.

They confirmed in the pre-E3 nintendo direct that you can swap the main menu and the miiverse screen between the TV and the pad. So yes, you can navigate the menu and start a game without the TV.

Yes, I'm sure it's possible. At first, I didn't understand why Nintendo made the charger a regular outlet charger instead of USB, but then I realized that it isn't a good idea to keep the GamePad tethered to the console. The GamePad is now able to be used with any outlet in any room. I can't believe I overlooked the benefit of that decision.

Good point. That said they could have made it USB rechargeable and the adapter could have been a USB one. Best of both worlds.

I actually wondered if it was because it needed more than the 5V that USB supplies.

The battery heavy ipad 3 can just about charge via USB2, I would think the gamepad can charge if hooked up. Saying that someone out there will make USB docks for those who game near their pc or want to charge it near the console using one less plug.

I will probably have the Wii U a couple of weeks or so before I actually get a TV :p

I'd lay money on you needing to set it up on a TV first.

Umm yea that's the whole point^^

But you know that it won't support every game, right? Playing games solely on the GamePad is a feature called Off-TV Play.

Here's a list of games that support it: http://www.giantbomb.com/off-tv-play/92-7482/

That's really disappointing. Having better support than remote play on Ps3 won't be hard, but that giantbomb list isn't very long at all. Moving your gaming to the gamepad should be a core feature.

I dunno about them fixing the resolution or texture detail. Heck, the PC version scarcely supports 1080P. It DOES have all the available DLC including all the dumb preorder bonuses and Argul's Tomb though.

I've been intentionally holding off on getting it until Wii U releases. It's getting steadily more difficult to justify though. BB had the PC premium version for 40 bucks last week.
I'm not just talking Darksiders but i even expect improvements in that game.

And the controller is a plus for me.

Off-TV Play is definitely something that will influence my purchasing decisions going forward. That's the headline feature of the console for me. A shame not every game supports it but I'm glad for those that do.

You're missing the point. If you read the description on the GB wiki page it clearly outlines why it's not possible for every title. Having Off-TV Play as a feature in every game would detract from the importance of making the second screen an essential part of the game's design (see: ZombiU). Off-TV Play is a very nice option for games that don't do that. And the way it's going right now, it seems like those games will be doing exactly that: second screen not essential? (multiplatform ports, second screen only used in certain modes) -> Off-TV Play supported. Second screen integrated into game design? (Nintendo Land, ZombiU, Wonderful 101) -> no Off-TV Play supported.

It will do okay. The series has growing brand recognition, it's a launch game and thus will attract launch title buzz from consumers eager for something new to play, ending aside the series does have pretty solid word of mouth, and there's an opening to Nintendo-only gamers to try out the series for the first time.

But, as I've said, it's a strange choice from EA. To re-release an 8+ month old game, of which is the final entry in a story driven interconnected trilogy, with absolutely no bundled bonuses or extra content. The way things are looking the Omega DLC will have released by the time the Wii U is out. That will mark the third single player story focus mission (From Ashes, Leviathan, Omega) that could have been easily bundled into the game, or even included as a free download coupon with new purchases, to market the late port as having some great value on the disk. The port seems solid enough and the pad controls are nice, but hardly anything game changing or revolutionary.

All of this is just an extension of EA's mishandling of the entire series though. I don't think anybody should feel entitled to buy this to prove to EA that ports can sell. Frankly, if this is EA testing the waters, then EA can get fucked.

I agree. I actually think it was very short sighted of EA not include a free eShop digital download code of Mass Effect 2 with launch copies of Mass Effect 3.....like they did with Battlefield 3 last year (Karkand Expansion). It could've been a quick port job that utilizes the Pro Controller and would've allowed for the transferable save file as well. They could've also monetized the Mass Effect 2 DLC.

Same for me. By now most of my gaming is done on handhelds at home. Off-TV play offers the same convenience.

But I am also ok with games that don't support it, as long as they use the two screens in a meaningful way. Or if they are primarily Wiimote controlled.

A free copy of ME 2 would be an incredible argument for purchase. No matter how unrealistic it is.

BTW: Does anyone know if ME3 supports the Wiimote? I doubt it, but have never heard anyone ask about it.

This site says Dragon Quest X runs in 1080p as well, it should.
http://www.nintendo-nation.net/dragon-quest-x-wii-u-the-laziness-of-square-enix-online/

In fact, the game he showed off pretty much featured those Wii Dragon Quest X visuals we’re so used to seeing – its polygons and textures primarily designed for standard definition – but rendered in 1080p HD.

I don't like the fact that Nintendo won't pack in a Motion Plus remote in both packages. I'm sure by the end of the generation that not too many games will use MP either. Sucks seeing as how its really great for some genres.

I think they would have to. They advertise the feature, for the purpose if someone else is already using the tv. Would kind of be a moot feature if you would have to take over the tv, to start a game, to just play on the gamepad. And as stated early I think the main start up menu mainly exists on the gamepad. but who knows.

edit: I see now the main menu and miiverse are swappable between the screens. Hopefully you can do the initial setup w/o a tv either.

Dam so it won't support that Xbox style pad they showed at E3?

Pro Controller? I don't see why it could not work in Wii Mode it's like a classic controller. I also do not see why the GamePad could not control Wii games in Wii Mode you just cannot stream but if it supports classic controls why not?

don't jump to conclusions until the reviews are in

There aren't really any launch games that interest me that much, but I still have barely tried the Wii so I'm thinking of getting the Wii U and start by going through the Wii library of games.

Is the Wii U GamePad or the Pro Controller compatible with Classic Controller Pro input for Wii games? EDIT: I see this was being discussed right above! I'd have to buy the Motion+ and a Nunchuk, but it'd be nice if I didn't have to buy a Classic Controller Pro as well.

I have a few Wii games I still need to purchase but I am waiting for the WiiU and I don't plan to buy extra controllers hoping those new ones still function as classic controllers

I'll need a Motion+ though

I think what would be really interesting is if you include how the PS3/360 versions ran of the ports in the lineup. Would be nice for comparison sake.

I dont have any additions myself but I will say that I'm expected 007 Legends to be running at 1080p/60FPS considering Goldeneye Reloaded ran at that resolution/FPS on PS3.

Mass Effect 3 has Off-TV mode

EDIT: I might be mistaken but doesn't NSMBU have 1080p or is that not confirmed yet?

When was Black Ops 2 confirmed to be 1080p? I know at the conference they said it was the first Call of Duty game to be rendered at "full HD" on console but I thought they were talking about 720p since all the COD games have been slightly below that on consoles. I'd love to be wrong and have the game at 1080p though.....
