Wii U Thread - Now in HD!

GAF, I really need some help. It seems that Toys R Us and Walmart still have pre-orders for the basic set. I am so tempted to pre order now because of the fear of not being able to get either of the sents at launch day, but I really want the premium, because of NintendoLand and well, the little Wii U stand and GamePad charging base. Would I be able to get that sold separately? I don't really care about the color, white Wii U is ok to me.

You think stores might get more Black Wii U pre orders? Help me make a decision. I can't seem to do it on my own. I know maybe this is too much drama :p

Also, walmart bundle options look good. They make you choose a game and a pro controller. Which I was going to get anyway.

Thank you all!

2012... all-new hardware... and still can't get something as simple as decent looking grass and dirt textures.

I'll still play it though :/

Only the Wii U version

It's a Wii port... by Square-Enix. Do the math.

Pre Order the Basic, and check in a little while at a store if they got new Premium bundle and than switch the Basic to the Premium.

To be fair, Dragon Quest Swords was a spinoff title released in 2007 on the wii and was developed by c-teams with a small budget and looked gorgeous. Way better than DQX on the wii. And I know dqx is an mmo and all but the difference between the two games is still huge. One would think thaT dqx, a game with large production values and a long development cycle would look better. And kind of random but where can I find the Dragon Quest X livecam?

The set of three stands is going to be $20 when sold separately. If you want NintendoLand and the stands I would hold off. You'll not only be saving $30 after buying the stands and NintendoLand separately, but you'll be getting more storage and the digital discount as well.

I was almost in the same situation you are in now (I managed to snag a premium pre-order) and if I was I was going to wait until I could secure a premium and not was my time and money with a basic version.

The original source is 4gamer.net ( http://translate.google.de/translat...www.4gamer.net/games/139/G013996/20120920113/ ) from a Square Enix - Event, SE probably said it there.
I suspect that fan-site Google translated the article and ran with it, because this is mistranslated. 4Gamer doesn't say anything about DQX running at 1080p, just that Wii U supports 1080p. Plus no other Japanese sites are reporting that it runs at 1080p.

Hell, it looked like the PS2 version upscaled with AA at PC launch, too. Art direction and IQ, for me, trumps all. I think DQX looks great on Wii U.

I would pre-order the basic first, just in case, but make sure to keep looking for premium bundles. As others have said, you will save a decent amount by getting the premium bundle. Newegg hasn't opened up any pre-orders yet, so if you get lucky (and they actually do pre-orders for the Wii U), you may be able to jump on them. I know some gaffers were waiting on NewEgg to open up pre-orders, so there's a legitimate shot that it could work out.

Yep, it's actually 1920 x 1080 and it is a noticeable difference on my 23 inch monitor.

Watching Blu Rays on my 51 inch TV in 720p or 1080p, no noticeable difference whatsoever.

Honestly, I was blown away when I tested out hooking up my computer to my 55" 1080p Sony Bravia. I'd been playing console games on that TV for years, and even sitting 12ft away I could notice what a difference 1080p and 60fps made when I played games like Crysis 2 and RAGE (which admittedly was already 60 on console).

I've seen slight differences between my 31" 1080p tv and my 720p monitor, but it might not be the best comparison. Plus although the tv can double as a PC monitor, I've never actually tested it. Hmmmm...

The N64 techdemo was a hotlink?

HEH! GET IT! HEH!?

Think of resolution like...um...imagine that the screen is divided into little squares. It's a grid. And each square can only display a limited amount of information at any one time (eg: one colour in a single instance, like an LCD screen). The higher the resolution, the bigger the grid, and thus the more 'squares' we have available to display information.

So if I'm looking at, say, an enemy across Hyrule Field, the density of the grid will dictate how many 'squares' are available to make that character appear. Low resolution = fewer squares on the grid, thus fewer squares to render that character. High resolution = more squares, thus more squares to render the character. More squares = more detail is apparent on the screen. It looks cleaner, sharper, with greater definition, especially over a distance.

Imagine you've got a really busy scene in the distance. Lots of trees, enemies moving around, a stream, grass, etc. With a low resolution, thus fewer squares on the grid, and each square limited to how much information it can show, the distant scene might look a bit blurry and undefined until you get closer. At a higher resolution we've got more squares to display information, so we can see greater definition in the trees, grass, enemies, and so on.

Thanks!

That makes a lot of sense. So, essentially a higher aspect ratio means higher levels of detail and sharper image quality.

I've also heard that the size of the TV matters as well. I have a 22" 1080p TV, but a lot of people have told me that you'd need at least 32" to notice a difference between aspect ratios.

I don't really plan on upgrading my TV until I move out -- which won't be for another 4 years or so anywhoo.

Aspect ratio is different to resolution. Aspect ratio is just a term to describe image width to height ratio. It doesnt really have a baring on image quality. Resolution is what you're talking about.

And size of display and obviousness of 1080p depends on how far away you sit. A small screen over a long distance will be less obvious. But a small screen right near your face, like on a pc, will be very obvious.

Oh alright, thanks for clearing that up!

I usually sit about 2 meters away from my TV so it's not too far I guess.

Can you do that anywhere? My option is Walmart... If it is then I'll pre order right now..

True... well I've been saving up so money is not that big of an issue. I still think black looks better though.. damn.

If walmart lets me cancel a pre order maybe this is what I'll do.. I just don't want to wind up being WiiU-less on launch day/week/month... window D:

It's a Nintendo Console launch! Can't miss this!

Maxed out on PC the CoD games look quite good, I feel. Very clean, aided by the huge attention to detail from the crazy high production values. They scrub up pretty well, even if they're not technical masterpieces.

That goes without saying :)

But on consoles its really showing its age, especially when compared to BF3, KZ3 (although that's a different style).

Or maybe that's just me being spoiled by my PC?

Just got the sudden urge to preorder a few pro controllers. They seemed so unattractive before but now... The hype... is... becoming too powerful.

Just think; right now you're console is probably being pieced together.....HYPEGASM!

I'd be more hyped for launch if I actually had something to play on that day besides NSMBU and ZombiU. Messing with the controller and console itself will be plenty enjoyable though.

But god, Bayonetta 2 can't come soon enough.

Can't wait. Hope it all goes smoothly.

Edit: I think that was just a mistake tbh.

This plus NintendoLand and a download of Nano Assault Neo and Trine2 will easily keep my household going until Christmas. Then hopefully a few of Rayman, Blops2, Darksiders 2, AC3 and F1 Racestars (yes it's coming) will arrive down the chimney :D

Nov. 23rd is likely just a mistake, but could there actually be a rational reasoning for moving the release forward? Better to release a week before the christmas month/closer to the US launch as it will generate international press, something like that?

I also think its a mistake. But if true it could be to avoid iPad mini (which is heavily rumoured fervent of Nov) or something like that.

Aside from those Wii U hardware pics & video, we could also take some gameplay.

Here's Mass Effect 3: http://www.gamereactor.es/noticias/34791/V%EDdeo%3A+Wii+U+expande+Mass+Effect+3/ (some out of focus gameplay included :p)

TBH, I was expecting way less than that. Game looks good (way better than other launch ports), Wii U features actually fit and switching from TV to Off-TV mode is immediate, as you can see. Rather impressive IMO.

I also liked TTT2 current status. Ninja Gaiden was fluent too.

fascinated how people are getting shitmad in the "Famitsu: Wii U region-lock confirmed"-thread. lovely meltdowns.

People have a right to be disappointed in Nintendo's bullshit, no matter how predictable it is.

What do you expect? It's a shitty fucking practice that's thoroughly anti-consumer which ever way you slice it.
Just because they did it before doesn't make it any less shitty.

I would just like to say that it brings me great joy that P* games and nintendo are working together, and hopes this new business relationship bears much fruit in the form of more new kick-ass action games till the end of Wii U's life cycle and beyond. That is all.

Great video. If you were present during the gameplay, can you confirm that Mass Effect 3 does in fact run at 30 fps, and not 60 as rumored?

I posted this in another thread last night, but there seems to be an EU release date discrepancy - certain web ads are stating 23rd November - that's a whole week earlier.

http://www.nintendo-nation.net/wii-u-november-23-date/

Whaat. This is such a stupid thing to make a rumor out of. You have fallbacks for flash-solutions. Obviously, someone cut a corner, and forgot to think that there will be more than one place that fallback can be used, and the only fallback they have is the American ad.

These people will be mad for years to come.

2016-New Nintendo console coming out region locked *troll face*

Gaf poster-I totally predicted it but-- OMFG F you Nintendo! Your bullshit is ridiculous! Goddamn You!

Yea that shit gets old after awhile. Not saying people cant get mad but its like being a fan of a bad sports team when they lose. Like really? You knew it was coming.

With "Nntendo´s " starts the problem. Its not only them, but talking like they are the only ones is just plain dumb.

And I pointed such industry problems out in the thread. But Nintendo doing it still makes Nintendo responsible. That's the point. And Nintendo, moreso than many other publishers, has a shameful history of localising exclusively for one region. And I'm not talking about obscure Japanese games that never get translated. Numerous first party titles are exclusive to the US and EU, usually smaller, niche games a specific region has designated as unprofitable.

Someone who is buying a Wii U, a video game system, is doing so predominantly to invest in future software from Nintendo. When Nintendo themselves have proven to be one of the most unreliable publishers in the world when it comes to global releases, then the concern and disappointment at region locking, obvious it may be, is entirely warranted, even if they're not the only culprit in the situation.

Great video. If you were present during the gameplay, can you confirm that Mass Effect 3 does in fact run at 30 fps, and not 60 as rumored?

Pretty sure the devs themselves confirmed 30fps in the last thread.

Yea that shit gets old after awhile. Not saying people cant get mad but its like being a fan of a bad sports team when they lose. Like really? You knew it was coming.

And how many Nintendo fans bitched and moaned to no end before NOA buckled under the pressure to localise Xenoblade and The Last Story to the US, when it seemed EU was the only region getting the games? How many people, right here on GAF, who owned and played a Wii, finally bit the bullet and homebrew'd just so they could play them?

Just because it's not a problem to you and/or you don't care does not mean it is not a valid concern and problem for others.

It's hardly bullshit though. In a perfect world people would only import games they couldn't get in their own regions. But people abuse region free gaming to buy cheap games from overseas. It undermines local industry and gives a false impression of sales in the imported-to and exported-from regions.

It's a common sense practice and a sound business practice.

Plus it cost very little to buy a freeloader if you're someone who wants those unique foreign imports :)
