12-14 was pretty normal for American kids to be sexually active..and this was like 15 years ago. I'm sure it's the same now..especially considering how different kids nowadays look to back then.

Levels of trust and education about sex.
If you treat teens with a bit of maturity and inform them about the the potential dangers of sex then they'll be able to make enlightened decisions.

I was raised in a conservative Christian environment so you can see why I'm a bit "BLUH! Young teens having sex?! BLUH!!!". I remember some 14 year old guy and girl getting expelled from my Christian middle school because he received a blow job from her while in the boy's restroom. I didn't even know what a blow job was at 14. Haha.

This is the first time I've ever heard of Spain's age of consent being 13, and I'm sure it's the exact same case for everyone else. Everyone just assumes it's 16 or something like that, it's not like that is even remotely common.

The guy is a dick btw.. he talked of struggling with the question of morality on his blog, but it's not about morality. They might well believe they love each other...
I'm 29, a year younger than this guy, and even if you gave me the opportunity to elope with the most smoking hot and interesting 16 year old you could find me on the face of the earth - the maturity gap would probably be enormous, I'd know it was sad, I'd know it was weird, I'd know I was imposing myself on this girls' youth. She may claim, when found, that she made the decision to run away herself - but as an adult, he should never have entertained the idea and should have advised anything but. At a stage where she's either approaching or already in her GCSE exam year as well. And her parents are worried sick because she didn't catch the ferry back... they've probably got a worry in the back of their heads that he's done something to her and they'll never see her again..
Hopefully the news coverage brings one or both of them to their senses. She needs to go home or at least contact her parents.

Not talking about this particular case; but it's not like teachers (or bosses at work) always abuse their position of power.
There are instances where it's just a relationship "happening" (while it remains deontologically wrong); I'd reckon though that these cases are a very strict minority (and I also imagine that they don't go public for obvious reasons).
What I mean is that is has to be proven that the teacher abused his position (if the girl was legal, that is).
By the way, seeing this guy's pictures, I have a hard time believing he's the one abusing xD
