Nerds and Fedoras

I read this article recently, and found it entertaining.
We all know the stereotype... and I'd say it's one I've generally seen validated in my day to day adventures.

It's just one of those things. Some people can pull off the look, but the majority end up looking pretty goofy.

The problem is that the fedora has become a go-to accessory for a peculiar subculture of love-entitled male nerds whose social inexperience and awkwardness manifests in a world rocked by a gender revolution—a tectonic shift in the makeup of formerly cloistered, rule-bound clubs.

They aren't bad people – they simply need a place from which to draw a sense of manhood, if not from women. When deciding how to represent themselves in a dating profile, why wouldn’t they cling to a fashion emblem from a bygone age, a time when guy was just a guy and a doll was just a doll? A fashion which recalls Frank Sinatra and Al Capone, a conventional masculinity marked by elegant detachment and an appeal to women that remains decidedly independent of their approval?

What's the NeoGAF™ consensus?

Unless you're old or a suave black man, you have no business wearing a fedora. Few exceptions exist

Who cares?
People on the internets do not like the way other people on the internets dress.
The wheel turns.

(I hate fedoras)

Let me also throw this in: If you have ever worn flip-flops or sandals with socks, you deserve far worse mockery than any man who has ever worn a fedora.

This is more or less it, which bites, because we'd all love to be classy like the guy in the middle.

It's possible to be that classy, but you don't do that by wearing a shitty 'Fedora' you bought at Burlington Coat Factory.

Go buy an actual Fedora that costs more than 50 dollars. There is a certain time and place to wear a Fedora, and that time and place is not with a zip up turtle neck sweater.

So, what exactly is the x-factor here? Fedoras, but only if they accompany a 3-piece suit? Would I get by with a button-down and a tie?

Fedoras are weird - some pull it off and most don't. Maybe it's an age thing, because it's almost guaranteed if you're wearing one as a teenager/young adult you look like a bit of an asshole.
