The NeoGAF 1 year challenge: stop buying games*

Evolved1

make sure the pudding isn't too soggy but that just ruins everything
this is a gaming forum...

i should go on a popular beard forum and make a thread hey guys no beards for a year

I'm in unless dota 2 goes live
Edit is f2p technically a new game?

If the point is the clear out your backlog, playing a game, f2p or not that is largely in a genre responsible for giving players hundreds of hours of gameplay hardly helps the situation.

1 year sounds long. should turn it into a elimination competition style. starts at 1 month, but basically just see how long you last. if you buy a game, your name gets crossed out and added to the wall of shame with the duration alongside the name of the game that did you in. people who manage to last a year get added to the hall of fame.

I mean play it until you feel like you're finished with it, as opposed to playing it for an hour and putting it down for a year.

Escape clause has you covered. Can I add you to the OP?

eh, why not. I'm down for a challenge.
does it count as buying a game if I sell other games to pay for it?
I fully expect to fail, btw.
does this start jan 1? because if not, I'm already going to be out as of next sunday.

When I purchase a new game, I do because I plan to feed it to my console and play it immediately. I never understood buying a game and keeping it sealed to play sometimes down the line, I only buy games I'm eager to play.
Except that time when the local game rush went out of business and was getting rid of everything for ridiculous prices (new games for 3€ older ones for 1€ it was like Christmas!) and I bought like 20 that I never played, and probably never will.

That's a good idea, but I'm an all-or-nothing-type person. Let's do this! *cue Power Rangers music*

eh, why not. I'm down for a challenge.

Great!

hm... I can see myself pulling through this; I haven't bought any game since The Last Story.

Though I did participate in Dota2 beta; but I think even f2p should count as purchasing a new game, because to me it is not a matter of not spending money, but finishing the games I already own.

Count me in. My backlog is on PC, Wii, DS, PS2, PSP.

I'm kind of have been doing that. Not as strict but it's similar. I mostly buy 3DS and Vita games now and I try to play the ones I get straight. Things have been pretty much sorted with the Vita but that's not entirely the case with the 3DS (still have 5-6 retail games to play along with 3-4 digital games which is still pretty decent in comparison to my overall backlog). I've still been tempted to buy into deals, I've also went on a huge dreamcast spree. These are games I won't be able to play straight away.

Hmmmm...it sounds difficult to be this strict and miss out on good deals if you're not planning on playing them straight. I'd like to join but not sure if I'll do well :/

Trying and failing is better than not trying at all, right? :) I'll add you if you want.

I would love to partake, although I know there's games already I will want to buy.

I have managed to severely restrict how many games I buy though, so that's something.

I add another challenge for myself; I will not be even browsing for the new game purchases until the next year [that is I will not be visiting GoG, Steam, Amazon, Gamestop, etc. unless I want to download my previous games or buy accessory, etc.]

Though I think it will actually make my main challenge much easier :)

*closes steam and gog tabs*

This is gonna be difficult...

Oh what the heck, count me in!

My backlog is: PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, DS, 3DS, PSP, PS2, Dreamcast, Gamecube, GBA...

...

Ehm, you know what, let's just not mention how much backlog we're talking about here :I

let's start a challenge to see who can go the longest without taking a shit*

*if i get diarrhea it doesn't count

Does this include holding it in? I have the very rare talent of being able to hold it for a while. Once held one for eight hours.

Oh hell naw! Wii U in less than 8 days, Super Mario Bros. U, ZombiU, Call of Duty: BLOPS2... I'm sorry there is just no way.

I've got a backlog of over 100+ plus games as well, but I just work through it gradually.

Edit: I changed my mind.

I can't see myself doing that. Next year will be the year the 3DS and the PS3 will really hit their stride. Maybe if all Japanese pubs come together and decide to stop all localization it could be done.

Nothing like gaining street cred on gaf by bragging about backlogs.

I really don't see it like bragging. Call it first world problem if you must, I admit it's silly how it got to that point in the first place. If I have to choose, it's better to have a backlog than nothing to play but it's also frustrating to not have the time to play the things you want.

To me it is just passion; gaming is my number1 hobby by far [though I listen to music more than I play, but it's usually few select bands and music that I stick to for several months]

Just to clarify, there's an escape clause. You can buy new games if you play them immediately upon purchase.

What a shifty escape clause. That's like going "I'm not going to look at porn any more unless I'm going to fap right then"

Just sell all your games and begin anew with the upcoming generation. No backlog, no problems.

I guess OP wants to stop being a hoarder so I salute his efforts.

Buy a game. Finish it or not. Rinse repeat. I don't know how you all get such huge backlogs.

We'll with Steam sales I can see, but it seems like a compromise.

Yes you get tons of games for cheap, but what's the point if you never get to play them since it seems to so overwhelming.

If I was in the habit of hoarding porn and getting stressed out over all the piles of porn I wasn't fapping too, that would sound pretty reasonable. Also asking people not to buy GTAV, Bioshock Infinite or The Last of Us would be pretty much futile. I still won't be buying new games that often, since there are very few games I need day one.

Alright, I'm in. I bought Prototype 2 yesterday, but I already know it's going to my backlog for at least a few months. This shit needs to stop ; _;

Ledsen you need to fix the OP or title because the majority of people aren't really understanding what's going on here.

What do you suggest? I did put the escape clause in a huge thing at the top, you would think that would suffice.

If you're getting stressed out legitimately over a backlog, don't make it a challenge or resolution. Make it a change in behavior. It really isn't that hard. Not trying to bust your chops or anything, but I know from experience that it isn't that difficult.

I'll be in after Hitman and AC3 come out.

Edit: Never mind, I don't think I will be able to do it because my backlog is not that big.

Same here, the passion is strong and it is my number1 hobby. Though things have gone way too far, I wouldn't call this situation ideal and it's difficult to get out of that habit. I tend to like buying and collecting things too once I get passionate.

Things have been slowly improving with buying less, playing more than what I'm buying and sticking to them until the end, but it's still not enough. Hopefully this will help and add more of a push to improve on buying habits and building a huge backlog.

It is. The challenge is to not buy any new games unless I play them immediately, which I basically never do. The point is to stop hoarding games.

I made a similar challenge to myself last year after Black Friday, and I think I've been pretty good with it. The only games I've bought this year on release were Mass Effect 3 and Resident Evil 6, and I played the heck out of them until they were completed. However I also allowed myself to buy games that were on deep sales, so I got The Darkness 2 for $10, Max Payne 3 for $20, and The Last Story for $8.

Good luck to you! I'm not going to join you since I don't really have a large backlog (it's probably around 10-15 games), and I'll get around to them when I get around to them. No point going crazy over it.

Well yeah there's that :) Steam sales and people with disposable income and a... "habit" of hoarding stuff don't go well together :)

My personal goal is simple:

1) No current gen or previous gen games owned. At all. Zero. Also no consoles or handhelds. And not even "timeless" PC games like Dota 2 or MMORPGs etc.
2) Collect and play every single interesting game for the Wii U, Xbox 720, Playstation 4 and onward. Play games when purchased.
3) ????
4) Have fun

I foresee you buckling at Christmas 2012. Good luck though! I still find it weird that a lot of people have trouble with sales/finishing games. At least in terms of AAA titles or basically non-indie titles, I find myself playing the game to completion or at least a solid chunk. It isn't like I feel a compulsion to do so, I just enjoy the game. I find it happens less so in indie titles but that's probably because a lot of indie titles are less start-stop, and more open in terms of level creation or endless running or something like that.

Anyway, good luck to the participants ^_^

I just make sure I take at least one game off the backlog for every game I buy. That way, the backlog never gets any bigger, and in some situations, gets smaller. Right now, it's at 326 games, but last week it was 328!

The challenge is intended to lead to a change in behavior. The plan isn't to go back to hoarding games, but to get used to buying fewer of them. I've done the same thing with exercise and eating habits, it tends to work pretty well for me. I have to go cold turkey before I can slowly adjust back, but not all the way back.

You know what, I feel like I skipped most games this year hoping shit will be dirt cheap instead of $60. My goal now is no games over 10 dollars. It's going alright, but I've had to use trading in some instances.

I'm interested in this because I still waste too much money.

I'd do it if I could buy persona 4 and 3 before I start. I would also need an exception granted for MH (though I could probably spend more time with 2) and any yakuza game that may release.

Is buying games you don't play affecting your financial situation? If not, seems pretty pointless to me, why are you negating yourself something that makes you (somewhat) happy? You shouldn't focus on not buying games but on living the situation with a calmer state of mind. Seems to me that's the whole problem.
I get games from Steam when I see a nice offer even though I have more than 200 I never even launched, my backlog keeps increasing and I keep track of it (lists, websites, that's a minor hobby too as I see it), I try to play as few games at a time as possible though and try not to think about the huge backlog increasing because... it's not like it's gonna explode or something, as you said it's a library. I'm collecting those. No big deal. When I finish the game I'm currently playing I choose another: it can be one I already own if I feel like it, or if nothing in the list picks my interest I buy another one or I wait for a moment of inspiration, so to say. Just... try to relax and enjoy the games and why not, the act of allowing yourself a treat.

Then again, if it IS affecting your financial situation just stop. Really. And you should take it even more seriously than you're doing. That is when things get out of hand. But I'm pretty sure this isn't the case ;)

Why not buy Persona 4 OR 3, and start playing the one you buy right away? Or are you thinking of the Atlus sale right now? If so, sure, buy them, but after that, the point really is not to buy games you don't play immediately even if they're on sale :) I have several hundred (probably 1000+) dollars of unplayed games sitting in my Steam library or bookshelves.
