Only 7Mbit? Come on, I have over 100Mbit download, let me use it!

And seriously, limiting it to ISP's is just silly. To make it so that only the Netflix app on Win 8 can stream "super hd", now that is just stupid.

A lot of the regular HD content isn't available on PC anyway. Wonder if this is true for the windows 8 app.

Surprised at Verizon Fios and Xbox 360 not making the list. Guessing both will be supported soon though.

If I recall correctly, silverlight on 360 (lakeview) -- the platform for all apps doesn't support 1080p. As for Fios (and other "unsupported" ISPs), I'm sure it is because Netflix doesn't want to pay anyone to host their CDN when other providers like Akamai do and they see this as an opportunity to put pressure on them

wtf

So Netflix offering new services for free is a bad thing? wut?

they're not offering new services for free though, they're trying to co-opt me into being their marketing partner with my ISP.

Netflix isn't taking anything away, they're simply unable to provide due to your ISP not following Netflix's rules.

Thank God my ISP is sensible and adheres to standards.

more like they don't like how the internet works and want to do their own shit... just like ESPN does with ESPN3...

My ISP already gets paid for providing internet access.

Netflix already gets paid for providing their service.

Why should i have to be the middleman in their peering/colo war?

Restricting services to certain ISPs is definitely a bad thing.
Yes restriction like that are bad, but it's not a simple situation. It's a costs issue.

Oh no ... you might actually have to send and email or make a forum post. wahhhhhhhh

VUDU has 1080p streaming.
Yeah it was just upgraded.

Is this also available internationally or is it US exclusive for now?

It says my provider supports the Super HD but I'm located outside of US.

What cost issue? We already have data caps so let me blow it on "Super HD" or whatever else I want.
Their cost issue. Are you under the impression doubling bitrates while serving millions of concurrent users isn't costly? It would be a small fortune.

Their proposed solution is http://techcrunch.com/2012/06/04/netflix-open-connect/. The pitch to the ISP's is it will actually lower their costs as well. Essentially it's a win-win.

I can't believe you're ok with this.
Why would I not be ok with getting notably higher quality video at the same cost I'm paying now?

The alternative to them going with Netflix Open Connect is simply raising their rates, or not offering the improved service.

So my ISP supports SuperHD (according to the netflix SuperHD page) and the SuperHD icon shows up next to films and TV shows in the PS3 app, but when I'm playing one of these items and pull up the information in the upper left-hand corner, the highest quality it ever shows me is Medium/SD. In fact, it jumps up the qualities of HD as it buffers and then goes jumps back to Medium/SD. Is this a bug or have they foolishly decided to use SD to mean SuperHD in that info box?

The video is obviously playing in 1080p HD, and my down is 10mb so I have enough for SuperHD, but it's hard to tell whether it's any better than X-High used to be though without anyway of doing an A/B comparison with the old streams.

We're not asking to have anything for free, we pay for our internet and we pay for our Netflix subscription. Something something something Net Neutrality.
What does this have to do with what you pay for internet, your netflix subscription, or net neutrality?

I don't see FIOS supporting CDN because Verizon is going to be offering their own streaming later this year. Bummer.:(

Was surprise when I load up Netflix on my PS3 to see the Super HD option show up. I live in NJ and have Cablevision as my provider. Been marathoning Louie the past few days and have to say, the quality of Super HD really does look great. For me, the difference was noticeable and I really do like it. It's Blu-ray quality in my eyes. I love you Netflix + Cablevision.

Suck on it peasants!

I bet the 3D is just 1080p SBS so they could offer it on the regular HD streams if they wanted to anyway, it shouldn't require higher bandwidth.

You signed up for Netflix based on what they were offering at the time.

If it costs them money to increase video quality, why would they be obligated to give that to you for free?

you posted this reply based on pure nonsense.

why would i be obligated to give a real reply?

Reading some PR,

In early 2012 Netflix began enabling Internet service providers (ISPs) to receive, at no cost to them, Netflix video directly at the interconnection point of the ISP's choice. By connecting directly through Open Connect, ISPs can more effectively manage their networks and more efficiently deliver Internet services to consumers, including the more than 1 billion hours of Netflix TV shows and movies consumers watch every month.

Looks like it is all on the ISP. Perhaps costs of re-configuring their network is holding certain ISP's back? I don't know. Could also be ego or existing contract clauses with media providers.

"Leading-edge ISPs around the world such as Cablevision, Virgin Media, British Telecom, Telmex, Telus, TDC, GVT, among many others, are already participating in Open Connect to provide the highest-possible quality Netflix service to consumers," said Netflix Chief Executive Officer Reed Hastings. "Our goal is to have all of our members served by Open Connect as soon as possible."

Comcast is fucking garbage. I can't wait for this company to go the way of Blockbuster Video when Google starts laying fiber here.

Funny how legit streaming is just now catching up to pirates....

Is this just 1080p 5MB/s (maybe 4MB/s based on the connection required?) encoded with h.264 or what. Is there some analysis?

OP says they're 7Mbps and yes, probably h264 since only the html5 clients are supported

7Mbps is pretty good, 1080p does look good with that for such a "low" bitrate! In 720p Im even fine with 3Mbps.

That is compared to disc, those are like 17-25Mbps. :D
Blu-Ray is still fucking insane quality to me
