Guild Wars 2 - 2013 Preview Video

Guild Wars 2 has sold over3 million copies since its August, according to an update on the MMO’s website from director Colin Johanson, who also outlined the team’s 2013 plans for the title starting with expanding and leveraging the achievement system.

One of the ways the teams plans to go about this is by “expanding and leveraging” the achievement system, which will allow players to earn new rewards for achievements, add tokens for for said achievements to turn in for rewards. New rewards examples provided were ascended gear and infusions. Support for daily achievements will be different each day of the week, and later on, a system allowing players to complete a “subgroup of achievements” to fulfill dailies will be added.

We’re adding new features as well. We’ll introduce a system of prestige and advancement specifically designed for WvW. This will give players a progression path where they earn new WvW-only abilities and bonuses, and with them gain prestige and visible titles/recognition. Also, we’ll add a new motivation to the WvW domain that goes beyond the overall weekly score to give more short term reasons to be winning in WvW as well. We’ll discuss all these features in more detail as we get closer to release!

I loved this game, hit the level cap and never logged in again. I really hope some of the new content and help me recapture the magic.

i was just about to open this thread =P

grats on the sales, but i didn't really dig the 2013 preview video, don't get me wrong but you should make this kind of announcements a little bit more interesting, like showing some concept art along with some dude talking in front of a camera

I really liked what I played of this (I only reached level ~30 but I used quite a few different classes). However, I'm still not sure that the almost complete removal of the holy trinity was a good idea. People complain about being locked into specific roles but it sure as hell helps with encounter design and PvP.

My main problem is a lack of trinity system. I knew this going in of course but dungeons and events with lots of people just felt like a zerg fest.

There were definitely design issues with some of the classes. I know I made it to a bit under level 40 with my Elementalist and gave up playing because the ability set wasn't very cohesive and didn't work well together.

Pretty lacking in more focus-group content too. I want to see more dungeons, at a sooner level. Level 30 is just too long of a wait.

I'm inclined to agree. All of the PvE encounters are some of the worst in any MMO and SPvP (which is generally where I spend a majority of my time in MMOs, I even enjoy instanced PvP in completely awful MMOs) wasn't compelling at all.

Really wish they'd completely scrap the concept of one-time story events and simply add more interesting world bosses to the game. Lost Shores was a disaster (and a completely empty zone now), and I don't ever want to suffer through anything like it ever again.

Nearly every class and every enemy needs a rework as well. Combat simply isn't thoughtful and most 'interesting' encounter mechanics involve a focus non-player abilities (boulders, switches). In fights were those aren't available (such as world events) it just turns into an autoattack zerg, where you luck into combo fields and finishers.

I also happen to think that the introduction of daily achievement rewards cut into world event participation (jugs give a ton of karma and pretty much offset all the 'farming' you'd do in a day in half an hour). Once they were introduced, Orr definitely died off.

They need to relook at their event scaling. Going back to the game now has been a pain since many areas are barren of players and doing many of the events now are impossible since your often alone or if lucky one or two others, yet its not enough to do many events.

My main problem is a lack of trinity system. I knew this going in of course but dungeons and events with lots of people just felt like a zerg fest.

Yea the only good thing about removal of the trinity was making it easy to group up for content. The content itself though is so sloppy in it's design, the dungeons just feel like chaos. No proper role system or aggro control mechanics..... not the most fun.

Presentation though was pretty nice, but the encounters were kinda meh. Game is great, but the dungeon stuff just was extremely meh.

I stopped after a month but still look at the thread from time to time since I can jump back in whenever.

I haven't been impressed by PvE without the trinity either.

Also I hated the 'downed' system.

I was a little disappointed with GW2, it was good sure but it felt not very different from all the other MMO's although it promised to be very different from all the previews and vids by the dev...

Same here. I really need to get into a good guild. I love the game but the endgame would just wasn't really as satisfying as I thought would be and I couldn't even beat the single player campaign that eyeball was tough as balls.

"Also I hated the 'downed' system."

The downed system is a total bandaid to cover up the lack of the trinity and reliable healing. I think this is a core problem with PvP, downed state almost singlehandedly ruins it.

It works alright in PvE, but I also don't see why it exists in PvP at all. GW2's PvP is by far the most disappointing aspect about the game. Not necessarily because it is the worst but because it is so far removed from its potential.

Had fun with this game for two characters until level ~35 playing with a friend. Not sure if we'll go back to it, but I feel I got my $40 worth considering the playtime was around 30 or 40 hours.

Man didn't realize I agreed with almost everyone about this game. Got max and logged out to never get on again. I just want a robust endgame system (lol, no endgame) and that starts with legitimate dungeons and boss encounters.

fake edit: I did play for like 60 hours so I definitely got my money's worth.

I am still enjoying the game, even though i have not played for a while due to moving into new apartment and being pretty busy. I have one Elementalist at 53, and a thief at 55. The game definitely drags a bit, but not quite ready to shelve it yet,

Structured PvP had a lot wrong with it. I still think it's hilarious they have a PvP map that has pointless PvE enemies in it. The only real good one was Battle of Kyhlo, and it's so difficult to get into a properly matched game due to the complete lack of matchmaking.

I played most of the beta weekends and I think I got my money's worth.

I'm hope this game does very well, just to support the business model with buy-to-play where there is extremely miniscule unbalancing based on the playmechanics you can purchase.

All of this is preferable to how most free-to-play games operate.

Nice to know it was a success for ArenaNet and I think they deserve it. Saying that though I likely won't be going back unless they do something about the PvP, all those promises amounted to nothing.

They had something special with GvG in Guild Wars, they could have built on it and made it even better. Guild Wars 2 gave them another chance to learn from their mistakes. I admire that they wanted to do something new with the PvP format, but instead they just ended up going 100 paces backward.

I also dislike the downed system. I don't think it's necessarily a bad idea, it was just badly executed.

So they're making the game more rewarding... I guess that's what they need to focus on if there's no reward of an end game. Yeah I know the whole game is an end game, and having an end game in the first place has huge flaws, but it did feel like a reward to get there and play it.

Not sure why they mentioned competitive pvp, they need to stop pretending they care about it.

Got really bored with this around level 40ish on my thief. My character just felt really weak. Combat just doesn't feel right in PvE situations. You either feel too weak, or everything is trivial. There is no inbetween. I've felt this to be the case with every class. The Elementalist is also criminally unfun, their spells do like no damage all because of their versatility. That's not what a lightning wielding Mage should be like. They should be blowing shit the fuck up. But they don't, even the spell effects are underwhelming to match the pathetic damage they do.

They have a lot to fix regarding PvE and combat. When I push an attack button, I need to feel the impact and feel like I just did something significant. WoW captured that feeling perfectly on most classes. Nobody has that in this game. Attacks like Heart Seeker should make you feel like a badass. Instead it's just very slightly bigger numbers than all your other abilities. No impact whatsoever.

It just doesn't have what made GW so good... And that is quality PVP. GW2's PVP is still pretty fun but GW1's PVP was one of the best PVPs ever made.

PVP and WvWvW developments are all I care about now. Dungeons are neat, but none of the PvE stuff really does it for me anymore. I was planning to hop back in when they do an expansion but it seems that won't be any time soon. I played for about 180 hours, I easily got my money's worth at least.

This is what I experienced on my Elementalist as well. You, in theory, have twice the amount of abilities as any other class... but in reality if you want to do good damage you need to specialize into one or two elemental attunements. And because they were designed around 20 core abilities, rather than 10, they lack cohesiveness if you do that.

Such a good game, i played GW for about 1400 hours and I enjoy this one even more. Working on getting my second guy to lvl 80 right now but Borderlands 2 has stopped me from playing. Will be right back at it shortly though. I hear there has been lots of changes in the last while.

I like the "PVE Story" more in GW1, I like the world/events more in 2. I actually really really like the down system (in PVE anyways).

I've said about 100x before that the removal of the holy trinity was the worst design decision this game has made. Rest of it is fantastic. Can't wait to see what's just around the corner though.

In the end I still kind of wish they would have gone with the GW1 formula though. You could expand it by making maps where multiple parties can appear on the same map if there is a huge boss on it or something (like Phantasy Star Online 2) but I much prefer the 'make party in town, go into party instance' style of game.

I know a lot of people would disagree, and I do like what they've done with GW2, but I've always liked that style of game a lot more.

Pretty bored with it tbh. I got to level 50 and then stopped completely. Lost all motivation to play. Nothing really bringing me back.

I enjoyed what I played of it - the sense of exploration was fun and I really got into the world they created.

I also really loved the first Guild Wars, and at ~110 odd hours with my character in GW2 I'm nowhere near my accumulated GW1 time. Still got more than my money's worth and I'll no doubt start a few alternate classes.

GW2 is the first MMO I played since DAoC where I actually continued playing after I hit the level cap (I still am).

Of course, almost the only thing I'm playing is WvWvW, so I don't know how well the other end-game content holds up.

Yeah, the end game content is pretty lacking, but it seems they are aware of that and the new content coming out the next few months should be interesting. I think the PVP is kind of a mixed back. SPVP is pretty fun and exciting, though there's no real PVE rewards for it so a lot of people never touch it. WvWvW is a great concept, but still has some very bad design decisions keeping it from being amazing.

I've enjoyed the content they've added thus far, and I look forward to seeing what they will bring to the table this year. I definitely think the game is worth a purchase, even if you max a character to 80 and never touch it again.

Well deserved. I loved this game when I played it and stopped after a few months like many here. Though, it is more due to how I do that with every MMO I play. I likely will come back whenever they implement the guesting system so I can play in the RP servers. I hoped it would have been in by now.

I keep hoping for another game to come out that captures me like DAoC did but just keep getting let down in that sense. I can't even really put my finger on what made the PVP in DAoC so much more enjoyable then any other MMO PVP since.

As far as GW2 goes, I really loved the exploration and the area / world design but outside of that I can't say much else stood out to me. Post level cap content in PVE and PVP was pretty disastrous. The lack of the trinity class system while a worthwhile idea to chase just didn't work and ended up with very unfocused feeling combat and poor PVE encounter design.

They really need to fix almost every boss. 90% of the encounters plays like a regular trash mob with more HP, a purple portrait and an ability that you need to dodge out of to avoid losing 70+% HP.

This is awesome. Well deserved.

Played GW1 like crazy and couldn't wait till this game finally released. I've been playing it since the first Beta and still play it, pretty much everyday.

Game is great, cannot wait for all the new content they are working on.
GAFGuild makes this game even better.

Surprised by how many people got bored of the game so quick. I guess to each his own.

Man didn't realize I agreed with almost everyone about this game.
I'm pretty sure the 300+ GAFGuild members would all disagree with you. You did say almost so I guess you are right.

I think developers and some gamers learned the trinity system was created for a reason. Zerg fests get boring really quick.
