PS1 = CD, PS2 = DVD, PS3 = BR. How will Sony 'WOW' us with PS4?

Cloud is the next big content/game delivery mechanism for Sony.

Not quite analogous to new disc media, in that it won't replace what came before, but it is A Big Deal.

For anyone who doesn't understand this:

PS4 - The number 4 (四) can be translated as "shi," - "shi" can be translated as death (死).

And "PlayStation Death" isn't a good name for a console...

So some Japanese institutions, not to jinx things, decide to skip over the number 4 (like how some silly people refuse to accept bills that total $6.66 in the USA).

And it would be oddly ironic, considering they already have a "PlayStation Life (Vita)."

The phenomenon is officially called "Tetraphobia."

PlayStation Death is an awesome name for a console.

Do the Japanese call PS3 as "Pureisuteeshion San"?

Looking at the OP, I'd hope nothing.
I mean: I'd prefer them to not push another format as done with the previous consoles, continuing pushing the BR (that up to now is not yet a full standard considering how the DVDs are still popular and cheaper) maybe keeping the price of the console down a little, avoiding the cost of a brand new "reader" (considering how the initial PS3 price was affected by the BlueRay reader)

PS1 – “Hey, it’s a gaming console + CD PLAYER”
PS2 – “Hey look, it’s a gaming console + DVD player. Pretty cool.”
PS3 – “Hey look, it’s a gaming console +BluRay player. Perfect, since I don’t have a Bluray player. Guess I have to get me an HD TV to fully experience this beauty”

PS4 – “Hey look, I can play games on it plus it has a BluRay player that supports 4k. But now I need 4K T... .....waaaait a minute….
This PS4 IS A 4K TV!!!! $599 well spent yo! ”

The state Sony as a whole is in, there'll be nothing too outlandish. They need to go for guaranteed millions rather than pie-in-the-sky billions

unfortunately, that would be disastrous

people expect SONY to wow them with PS4. As we have seen with PS3, launching the most powerful console pays off in the future. Look how well ps3 is doing in ww sales and it hasnt reached 150$ yet

All SONY needs to do is launch at the same time as x720. In a few months after release they can brag how they are the winners in Asia and Pal/euro region

I came here to say this.

PS4 will probably do something with Gaikai and streaming games. Probably for the Backwards compatibility issue the ps4 will have if it's hardware cannot emulate the ps3 architecture for older games(which certainly looks like it).

Not being able to play all the games I already bought from the from PSN would be just crazy. So make it happen Sony!!!

512 GB SSD as standard storage

Seriously, this would be a wow factor (imagine near instantaneous load times for games and <5 second boot up times) although you better start getting that third job to pay for the console. It won't cost less than USD 699 with a 512 GB SSD.

Blu-ray really wowed us with the bad read speeds and necessary HDD installations.

Didn't matter to Sony. All that counted was that they won the HD optical disc war against Toshiba's HD-DVD by placing that Bluray trojan horse into more households.

Now to the long suffering consumer that just wanted to game straight away without mandatory installations...

The Amiga Brotherhood
This seems to be the turn of 4k, other things will probably be cloud gaming, every game on the store since d1, anti used games protection, more efforts on 3d and move 2, hopefully d1 full and native vita integration(as controller, remote play etc)

Gaming Console??? I believe its a Computer Entertainment System

The PS4 will sport a faster blu-ray drive. I don't think Sony can afford sticking a holographic drive in it. Besides, a four-layer blu-ray disc can store 100GB of data, which, I would think, is enough to store 4K video and next-gen games. There is no need yet for another format.

I remember when they claimed blu-ray would mean that games could be finally be much larger, but I think in every single case, the size of blu-ray games, or any game over 5gb is because of less/non-compressed textures, video and perhaps audio.

Skyrim, the largest game ever made, is, or rather, can fit into a mere 4-5gb.

Copy pasta dungeons, inns and other assets will do that for you, plus the 360 7.94GB DVD limitation imposed on them for multiplatform development. Games with varied locales and high amounts of assets can easily fill up that bluray disc.

A hybrid of blu-ray and UMD. The system will be simply called the "P", and will come with a camera which will be a direct ripoff of Kinect. It's called the blUMPkin.

The BDA has confirmed that they have been working on creating a 4K optical disc standard based around 128GB (quad layers) Blu Ray discs also called BDXL, a format which is already available to store datas.
Having a Blu Ray drive capable of reading 4 layers discs seems a good option for the PS4, 4K won't become widespread for a few years, but giving developers then option to ship their games using one up to four layers of space seems a good thing, notwithstanding Sony's clear ambitions with the 4K format.
